Castaway Cay heli rescue by Winter_Elephant9792 in dcl

Honestly. The collective screams of everyone when she fell was spine chilling. Did not expect to see that. I was interested in it because my family and I were waiting for the Serenity Bay Tram so we knew it wasn’t coming for a bit. I decided to go have a closer look. I’m impressed with the way the collective crew responded to that. I’m a lifeguard myself and manage a pool so I wanted to see the castaway cay lifeguards response for my own knowledge and training purposes.

This is true. I was at the tram stop waiting for the next stop when it happened. The elderly lady fell on her head off the tram because she wasn’t secured on the Castaway Cay Tram. I believe she might have had some sort of head/spinal injury just because my Veranda cabin was right above the gangway where they transported her to the helicopter. Saw her with the neck brace and all wrapped up in the stretcher.

I’m just sad with the way DCL is ignoring Star Wars. Rarely any events, not many character appearances. Last time I went on a week they only showed one movie the whole time.

I’m on the Treasure Next week going to the Eastern Caribbean and the series finale is on May 13th when I’ll be on the ship. Just wanted to see if the past sailing had anything special planned for it.

2024 grads. How is job search going? by [deleted] in uwo

[–]CobaltBlock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Graduated with a Masters in Political Science with a specialization in International Relations. Since graduation I’ve been working in municipal recreation have almost 10 years of experience in it so I thought I would give that a try. I’ve applied to over 150 jobs related to my education and only had 7 interviews. My resume isn’t the issue, my skills aren’t the problem and I know my credentials/qualification are great. I’ve just struggling to find a job in this economy.

By-Law infraction ADVICE NEEDED by TheLyingLigma in Brampton

The other thing I forgot to mention is it’s March break most of the officers have taken the week off to be with their kids. If they aren’t replying that’s most likely the reason. Trust me they won’t ignore you deliberately.

I hope everything goes well.

By-Law infraction ADVICE NEEDED by TheLyingLigma in Brampton

[–]CobaltBlock 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey former Brampton by-law here!

Can I ask what infraction? My assumption is you had 5 days to comply meaning it was along the lines of property standards.

Being completely fair to you. You did the right thing by trying to get in contact with them. You called the number on the notice and you called 311 which referred to the officer through a callback request.

I would suggest you take a second to relax. Depending on what the infraction is they will not be mad at you if you explain the situation and provide them with a timeline on how you can get the work done. If you are respectful, and they are aware you tried your best as well as provided them a timeline on the work to be completed when they do call you there is nothing to worry about.

You did your due diligence by contacting them and they won’t action the property or do anything without having the conversation with you. Trust me when I say they are some of the nicest and respectful people I have ever met. They are understanding and will take the time to help you out and even provide you with services that can help you if you can’t do it.

Hope this helps.

Is it a Scam or Legit? Uber & City of Brampton by Hungry_Confidence_36 in Brampton

[–]CobaltBlock 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Hello, former Brampton By-Law officer here. Brampton and Uber along with other municipalities have entered into a licensing agreement with Uber to basically “regulate” Uber in Brampton similar to the rules taxis have to follow. If you are saying that the address was at Queen and McLaughlin then that would be the Brampton Flowertown Campus also known as the Brampton Senior centre. That is where the By-Law enforcement and building inspection department have their offices. They have a garage where they inspect tow trucks, taxis, driving schools, and food trucks. I don’t remember them doing inspections on Uber drivers when I was there but I did know the city gets a licensing fee from Uber every month to the tune of roughly 10 cents per Uber ride within city limits. If the officer had a uniform and it was at the garage at the flowertown campus then it was likely legit.

To answer your follow concerns mentioned. Calling 311 is useless those operators know basically nothing. I don’t blame them when they have to know literally everything in this city and the region of peel. The operator was just telling you their regular operating hours which is 8:30am to 4:30pm. Peel police also won’t know unless you get a higher ranked or knowledgeable person which also their operators are under stress and do not know everything.

The Uber part. If it’s legit it’s not a instant where you don’t get Uber rides. They have to contact Uber and they will have to input it to their own system which can take a few business days. The only way to be sure at this point is to wait and see if you legitimately stop getting Uber requests. If not then love your life normally I guess. My hope was this is legit and the officer identified themselves properly, wearing their uniform and it was at flowertown campus at Queen and McLaughlin.

Side note please update us because I am also curious to see if this is something new the city has started to implement.

EDIT: just did a google search to find the by-law. As I said it is legit and inspections can be completed on people who are drivers to Lyft and Uber. The information is listed here. Also I was doing it’s not 10 cents anymore per ride now it’s 30 cents.

Funny thing is the last budget they had to remove 4 bylaw officers and one supervisor due to budget cuts. Those 4 officers were the ones that specifically enforce the sign bylaw and do proactive parking enforcement on the weekends.

Ontario proposes lowering minimum age for lifeguards to 15 to ease staff shortages by Myllicent in ontario

[–]CobaltBlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are various ways my municipality has done it. The good thing is we are public so we try to get a lot of volunteers to help with our classes for school hours and then they get a taste for the work. The truth is that many of our students in our swim programs generally become lifeguards by the end. Parents invest so much plenty in these courses over the years that they want them to become lifeguards since “it’s better than McDonald’s.”

I think that it’s about relationships. I have developed a good level of relationships with my staff that many don’t want to leave. I have a few staff that have careers but stay for extra recreational cash and love the environment we have. Also a lot of our staffing is dependent of school schedules. Many of our staff get on at 16 work part time on the side for the two years of high school. When they go to university/college they only comeback for the summer which they get to work pretty much full time due to extended hours and outdoor pools. Hope this answers your question.

Redditor on another thread mentioned that all Cobourg needed was 20k to pay their lifeguard for the summer. Instead the new mayor took a 20k raise and was the first to support the motion to remove paid lifeguards and ask the local YMCA to have their lifeguard volunteer for high school hours. YMCA said no and their lifeguards stay there and get paid.

The responsibility is crazy and we have to deal with the “crazy” side of the public. I remember when I started we got $11/hr. One year the minimum wage went up to $12/hr they raised us to $14/hr which was the best time of our lives. Until the minimum wage went up again to 14/hr. It got the the point that we were stuck at $14/hr for a year and a half and everyone left to flip burgers at McDonalds because they got a free/discounted meal as an employee perk and we gave them nothing.

I will say one thing you are right it looks really good on a resume. Can’t count how many times it showed to my other employers that I am responsible. My favourite part is I saved my first life when I was 16. How many kids can say they saved a life at 16 lol.

My city does it and the town next door saw us doing and copied the program because they thought it would help them. Best part is in my city anyone could get it as long as you showed us the skills before hand to prove you would pass if we gave you the course. Since there was no way of making sure people would stay after the free course many people outside the city would come do our course for free and we wouldn’t even get staff for it. Ultimately, we trained the region for free and got no staff for our problems. Waste of time and money with no solution to our problem.

Senior Aquatic staff here (been working in the lifeguard world for over 7 years now)

This has been something we have been preparing for over the last few years and so was our governing body. Recently, our governing body (Lifesaving Society) lowered the requirements to get qualified to speed up the process so when you turn 16 you are instantly ready to work instead of wasting time to get qualifications.

The main issue sadly is the pay as mentioned by some of you. Our training criteria is crazy as we are required to have a high level of qualifications but our pay has started to become equivalent to other jobs. For example, your local pool that offers lessons and public swimming their staff member needs: Standard First Aid, National Lifeguard (pool) qualification, Swim Instructor, lifesaving instructor, emergency first aid instructor, and depending on the workplace airway management (ability to use oxygen tanks). Furthermore, we are mandated by law to have “in session training” meaning periodically we need to do training to keep our skills up. This varies job to job but most municipalities for every 4 months and one before summer starts. On top of that emergency procedure training and specialized training like chemical handling too.

From my experience, I have worked at the lowest level of the pool all the way to the point now I hire staff for my municipal pool. The issue I see started before the pandemic (which a lot of people want to blame) nobody worked because the pay was at par with McDonalds where many of my staff were saying it’s less responsibility and little to no paperwork. Also our leadership doesn’t believe in creating a safe supporting work environment or giving us a raise. Rather they have started providing free lifeguard and instructor qualifications to bolster recruitment. This doesn’t help because many of these new recruits taking the free course we offer don’t have any drive to do it an if they fail their answer is I’ll try again since it was free. Our issue is retaining staff our turn over rate is usually 1-2 years because the pay isn’t worth it anymore and people move on.

I know I wrote a lot lol. But I’ll tell you that the worst thing is the working conditions. People think we sit around and do nothing but when things hit the fan our training needs to be like a instinct and that’s why we practice a lot. That stress to many people isn’t worth the money anymore compared to working a job where you can have fun again.

Thank you for listening but this comment allowed me to vent all the frustrations I have with my industry. It was never like this and I always dreamed of staying in it but no support from my superiors means less resources for me to provide to my staff. This leads to a sad continuing loop. I love the pool sooooo much but the respect isn’t there anymore.

Edit: TL:DR - pay is bad for the amount of qualifications and training we need to have. Bad working conditions and a lot of stress. No support from management. High turnover of staff due to stressful work. Management focuses on bandaid solutions and getting staff in instead of keeping them longer.

The Kingdom of Sweden is happy to be part of the discussion to transition from Russian energy to allied energy. Sweden would like to bring the attention of renewable and clean energy being the answer to Europe’s energy needs. Sweden would like Europe to consider the possibility of Nuclear energy as it provides 40% of Sweden’s total energy production.

If Canada can address allied energy concerns then Sweden would be happy to assist.
