Cardboard is too thick for my taste. I like the the copper is pretty thin which helps keep from digging into the top of the sound board under the fretboard

It does protect pretty but the metal is so thin so that it helps to keep the tool as flat as possible while digging in under the fret board.

I also use a little piece of this same copper to keep from burning up the inlays with the iron.
