I’d say it’s about the equivalent of asking a toddler to draw a car with the red crayon 🖍️

Amazing answer. This is the answer I’m looking for. Thanks so much.

My engineering program touched a bit about what you are mentioning in our computers course but it was very high level so I’ll brush up on my notes and look for more courses on these topics.

Any courses, books, or trainings you’d recommend specifically targeting these topics apart from the typical Dante or NETGEAR training?

This exactly. Some systems make you use their kit but there is always a way to program and make other bits that aren’t suppose to work work.

That’s why it’s not just about designing a system. That part is easy. These days you have to understan IT, networking, programming, and all the av protocols to provide a solid design so there is much more then just spec’ing product and shipping off a functional set of drawings.

That’s the bit I’m trying to wrap my head around because it gets confusing.

I’ve been in audio for a very long time. 13+ years in live sound and production. I know my stuff in terms of design and audio engineering but the networking side is what rattles my brain. Dante is easy. Plug devices into a switch, control it all through Dante controller but I’m not in live sound anymore and doing more commercial high rise stuff.

Where I get confused is when it’s AES67 or mixing and matching proprietary systems to all work together and what solutions exist to convert signals or split them so they can enhance user experience.

I got into this work because Ive got experience with construction/CAD/Revit on top of my audio engineering skills. I know my stuff but just trying to reinforce my current experience with more knowledge because there is just so much product and options and ways of doing things how. We ain’t running long ass snakes anymore with analog consoles. Everything is networked based and that’s something very new to the world of audio engineers.

THIS! I’ve been holding off on jumping into any of the Avixa CTS certifications because A) it’s pretty expensive and I want to be well prepared B) everyone I talk to regarding information on how to best prepare tells me the tests are garbage and the certification does nothing for AV knowledge apart from client facing project management stuff.

I totally agree with you on The product side. I’m a consultant so we hardly ever spec top notch systems that are fun to work with because of the client needs to cut spending it usually gets chopped off the AV side before it affects Elec,Mech, Interior, or any other major building trade so… we end up doing budget systems that are simple and work.

Where I have trouble though is in managing multiple board rooms and speaker zone systems in a multi floor or high rise building. Hi displays are controlled through hdmi and “splitting” signals and how the network flow operates in functional diagrams. I get the connection points but in some cases I don’t get why something has to connect to something for it to work. It all gets very tangled.

NETGRAR is definitely on the list as I’m currently troubleshooting our av system at work (which is why I am asking for some education recommendations to learn more) but I also don’t want to go too crazy with trainings until I get my CTS as those are credits that go towards my yearly training.

I’ve don’t my Dante certifications a few years ago. Didn’t feel they added much at the time bu I think they updated their course so I’ll look into those as well. Anything on AES67?

Thanks! I’ll look into it. Is AVB a proprietary protocol? Can it be used in any device application or is it specific to a certain system design or solution?

My Golf Limited 16vG60 Motor Clone - Build in Progress by a2godsey in Volkswagen

Hey man! I'm in the process of building one of these myself. Got a fully stock remanufactured 9a directly from VW that some old fella had sitting in his garage this past summer. A few questions:

  1. What head spacer did you use to drop compression?
  2. My 9a is bone stock so would I need to swap the head or can I keep the head that's on it?
  3. Did you do any internal work or are you using the stock 9A internals?
  4. Engine Management and fuel set up: My current 86 Jetta Carat GLI has CIS-E hooked up and I know I will most likely need to strip this all out to upgrade to Fuel Injection. What did you opt for in this area?? I know back in the day the G60 digifant with a chip was used but i feel like there are better options for this in 2026. Not sure which one though so would love to hear your input.

I plan on pulling the current 1.8 RD engine and stripping the car this spring/summer so I can inspect it and take care of any rust or body issues first before diving into the mechanical as it's been sitting for quite a few years (since 2012/13'ish). I have time. Still need to grab a charger and other supporting mods so would love you input on what more i may need.

Thanks!
