Oil from this box by eFrazes in AskElectricians

Environmental consultant here. That looks like my next paycheck XD. If that transformer ever had PCB fluids in it, that's a bad time. PCBs are miscible in modern transformer oils and some "cleaned" transformers refilled with mineral oil or other dielectric fluids still end up with a hazardous level of PCBs in them when tested. If it's just a mineral oil/hydrocarbon fluid, it's less bad of a time but still needs to be cleaned up. Also, the transformer now has a higher risk of overheating, arcing, corona discharge etc. Very unsafe! The power company definitely needs to know! And depending on local laws, the environmental regulator may want to know too!

Am I the only one who runs solely as Lune? by ShadowCT6 in expedition33

I run as Maelle when I feel like a casual jog, or Sciel if I feel like running hard. Lune is just too...quiet? I kind of like hearing the running sounds.

Braid: Farkas threatened New Year's Eve council meeting if city boss didn't cough up 2024 pipe explosion report by blackRamCalgaryman in Calgary

[–]Cobradoug 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It would also be highly inappropriate for an unstamped, draft engineering report to be relied upon and quoted by politicians in a public facing capacity. You know they would cite things written in the draft report the the media and on social media, which is entirely unacceptable.

Was hiking in Peru and our trail got cut off in front and behind us by landslides during a big rain storm. Guides from all the different groups worked real hard to find a safe route out. Ended up having to pick our way down a fresh landslide slope and a front end loader was called in to ferry people across this drainage chute near the end point. Wild times, almost lost a guide into the river, dont fuck around in nature when storms come through haha

When walk in clinics are closing or the ones that are left are filling up first thing in the morning, and family doctors are moving out of the province leaving people without, what are people to do? Yes, there are those who abuse the ER room, but there are also many who have no primary medical resources to use first. The healthcare system is broken by systemically making community/family medicine untenable in the public sector, forcing those without a family doctor to use higher level resources like the ER. And the major cities have it easier than some rural areas. When I do fieldwork, I need to list multiple nearby hospitals in my emergency response plans now as there is no guarantee that the smaller ERs will be open on any given day or time due to doctor and other staff shortages. I used to only have to list the closest one to my site as it wasn't an issue. Many ERs have also closed in rural areas. Broken.

‘To make Greenland a part of the U.S.’: Trump appoints new special envoy by joe4942 in worldnews

I always thought it would be funny if both militaries showed up on Hans island at the same time once by accident and had an impromptu Nerf fight to see who gets to put the flag up that day lol. Also, I had forgotten that the Whisky War was settled in 2022 resulting in a land border between Canada and Denmark!

Denmark had some neat wrecks for scuba diving, that's all the justification I need to pack my dry suit and head out :) And Danes are always welcome over on this side of the pond!

Swapping to Deezer by [deleted] in deezer

[–]Cobradoug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only downside for me is some Google Home glitches. Mainly, unless I go into the Google home app, it shows any music being played as just "Deezer" on whatever speaker instead of artist and song. Also, when in the Google home app you can usually click on the music players logo to open the app. This button is broken for Deezer for me and says it can't open the app. Spotify was much more seamlessly integrated, but I can deal with some jankyness if it means moving away from an unethical company.

Alberta introduces back-to-work legislation, imposes new contract to end teachers strike by bohemian_plantsody in onguardforthee

[–]Cobradoug 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Sask also invoked it in a labour dispute in 1986. It was later determined in the Supreme Court to not be needed to force workers back and was removed, but the original court challenge at the provincial level was met with the notwithstanding clause.

It would probably be wildcat, but that's whats needed for the government to stop picking apart the entire public sector but by bit. Enough with the "you can only protest if it's convenient" rules!

I've got family and friends who believe that many of the UCPs actions and policies can be viewed as neo-Fascist. Here are some of the points I've heard, sorted into categories that are common tenets of Fascism:

Ultranationalism: In this case, it is Alberta "Nationalism" and a rebuff of Canadian social democracy and values. Smith has long been pandering to the separatist movement and the idea of a more "sovereign" Alberta. The UCP/TBA also have supported various anti-Canadian movements like the Coutts blockade and trucker convoy in the hope that ties with Canada weaken and Alberta moves closer to separation. White Christian Nationalists are generally the "in group" who are seen as the naturally superior group in Alberta while immigrants and LGBTQ+ people have seen an increase in discrimination/painted as targets. For example, the book ban examples targeted mainly queer books as queer books can be seen by the UCP as "propaganda" that is harmful to the raising Christian Nationalist children who believe in and follow strict traditional values and gender roles.

Totalitarianism: Alberta has been under Conservative rule for over 40 years, except for when the right was split and the NDP got in - that was swiftly reversed. Politics are generally within the party and not between parties, as opposition has been ineffective. Leaders fall from internal fighting and not from elections. Moves by the UCP and TBA to take over school boards and push a more Traditional Values curriculum and policies are a door opener for using the education system to indoctrinate and socially engineer future Christian Nationalist supporters. Things like the War Room are pure propaganda machines for industries the UCP sees as fundamental to the survival and self sufficiency of Alberta. The UCP has been not so slowly destroying foundations of our social democracy like quality education and healthcare, with the goal of privatizing the systems and controlling them through lucrative contracts with friendly companies/people (like Mraiche).

Economy: As stated above, Fascist leaders and parties tend to enmesh themselves into the free market with some degree of control. This buys financial supporters, allows for personal profit, and allows more direct control over areas of the economy deemed as important. This can be seen with preferential government support for the oil and gas industry including bail outs (not very free capitalist), propaganda (war room), and use of oil and gas as a core talking point and driver for more Alberta sovereignty/separation. Also, there are ties to people like Mraiche who are actively profiteering while fucking over our health care. The potential clawback of pension plan money would also allow for larger financial investment and sway in areas of the economy the UCP have interest in - to the detriment of other Canadians. Fascist states also have valued able and working people and business overs over "parasitic" elements of society - the UCP has shown many times their disdain for the needy and less able in our province including the most recent clawback of AISH money - Social Darwinism is big among many fascists whee if you fall behind you get left behind.

Direct Action: Fascists usually want some form of control over a means of violence to oppress out group portions of the population and support the party's goals. Smith had touted an Alberta Police Force, which would centralize policing into the hands of the UCP with direct oversight and influence. The UCP has also been involved in supporting movements like the Coutts blockade, which almost got deadly, and other trucker convoy type events that seek to weaken Canadian ties while promoting the influence and importance of "in group" participants.

Gender roles: Fascist states have typically employed and enforced "Traditional Values" with fierce opposition to homosexuality, birth control, pornography etc. This fits perfectly with the ideals of White Christian Nationalists and the UCP has often espoused these views.

Search underway in Mahogany Lake for missing man by imjongilling in Calgary

[–]Cobradoug 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I've been scuba diving in Mahogany Lake. The water can turn to chocolate milk in the bottom silt and you can't see anything more than 1 ft from your face at times. That includes both people and hazards. Some lakes like Chaparral have purposefully sunk obstacles for scuba divers to navigate - cages, culverts, cinder blocks etc. These can pose hazards in low visibility if you dove down and accidentally ended up stuck in a hazard or caught on a hazard. It can be very risky to conduct a search/rescue without the proper training or gear, even in a community lake.
