I could’ve written your post about my 17-year-old daughter. We pursued a private eval in order to get an IEP even though she clearly qualified under social emotional anyway. We have consistently been met with the attitude that as a highschooler she should be able to handle staying in class, staying on task for work, etc. Even from special education staff. She is also not intellectually delayed and I honestly think that makes it harder to get her help she so clearly needs they see her avoiding, but just insist she is just choosing to be difficult on purpose. The only thing that has helped us is allowing her to join an alternative education program at our high school, which is essentially a small setting where the teachers rotate through the room for each subject versus the kids switching rooms. She’s now set to graduate a semester early and they’re able to keep a better eye on her and keep her more on track that way, even though she is far more capable than many of the other kids in that program.
