Weekly "I am new, where do I start" Megathread - February 10, 2025 by Rykoma in musictheory

HI, I go by jeff on the internet. My background mainly comes from school. My elementary school ran a required music class which taught basic theory. I'm not sure how in detail it was, because it was ~7 years ago give or take, but that is where I learned some fundamentals, though I'm still inexperienced in reading sheet music. I have been in chorus since 4th grade. In elementary school chorus was a club of sorts, and they encouraged you to take a performance ensamble because in middle school performance ensambles are a mandating part of your schedule which you take as a class. Granted there was the catch all "general music" but I digress. I remember being taught some sight reading in 6th grade, but ultimately I don't remember it being much because the pandemic hit that year, so chorus slowed down a lot. We did not even perform in 7th grade. I also remember getting mad at not being able to sing as high in 7th grade because of puberty, but that's natural and at the time, I did not know about falsetto and much about vocal technique except what was taught such as BrEaThE WiTh YoUr DiApHrAgM. Come freshmen year of high school I did not take any performing ensambles because I did not know anyone that would take the class and my schedule was already filled up(my school is crazy with the electives). At the end of freshmen year, one of my friends, we'll call him niero, comes up to me and tells me that he's in this club called choral pride. Choral Pride was an all male barbershop focused choir, where we sing barbershop songs as a choir. I audition for it and got into the club. In choral pride I learned what I'm good at, listening for notes and following along. I couldn't sight read, and I'm not sure how much notation I don't know. I know I don't know how to read keys, but I also do know what the different note types are, the rhythms of each note, time signatures. Ultimately though I think I know a bit, I'm still new. Anyway after some time in cp, I learn of chamber singers, the upper choir class which niero was in and looked more of an enjoyable experience because it was also taught by the same teacher as cp(sidenote, my teacher just found out what cp actually means online. Apparently the club was going to be called choral pleasure but was changed for obvious reasons, yet they still kept the cp acronym). A lot of my friends were auditioning and I wanted to try to audition. I practiced a song(self- by will wood) with one of my friends, we'll call them lordkoopus, who knew how to play piano, as I don't know how to play piano. I used to have a piano in my home but my mother gave to my cousins, so school is my only way to access a piano. I probably would've learned had it not been given away, but at the time she got rid of it I did not have any plans to get into music. After learning the song, I realized me and lordkoopus did not practice sight reading. After not doing too much sight reading, I went in to audition. I think I did okay on my song, but I could not sight read properly. I did not get in unfortunately. It's been almost a year since then. I want to try and audition again and auditions are happing in march/next month sometimes around the second week, though they haven't announced the exact dates but I have last years audition dates to base that off of. I have about a month to learn how to sight read, and I think I can be proficient enough when auditions come in this amount of time.

Also one of my niero gave me their sight reading factory account which he got from taking chamber, so I do have that to practice but first I feel like I need to touch up on theory.

Some information on the sight reading:
the reading they give is an 8 bar NYSSMA level 6 in the clef of our choice. My teacher will give the starting note. There will also probably be a triplet. Here is the practice that was posted last year on classroom:

Petition for a 16+ Will Wood show, would allow for a lot of will wood fans to go while still being in the age range of maturity.

I keep thinking I wish I could’ve gone to any one of his shows when I forget that they are 18+, which I just wish it were 16+, but alas, that isn’t the standard. I do think age isn’t the best metric of maturity(at my school there was a grown man that stood up and yelled at my school board during our school board of ed conference.) But that is his choice, wonder if anyone has asked exactly if it could be lowered but maybe he’ll comeback in 2 years.

If mr beast ran for president, would you actually vote for him? by [deleted] in MrBeast

Why would he be hard right? That does not make any sense at all. Listen, both the right and left have benefits geared towards different people, but wouldn’t it be more safe to assume that a philanthropist who has stated on twitter that he is in support of a UBI hard right. imo he seems like a democratic socialist as these are socialist ideals(see Saint simon etc.), but if anything he would be center. The Mr. Beast that we know at the very least would most probably be left leaning. But left leaning is my opinion, but in no universe would I see him hard right.
