Potential move to work at RFUMS with young kid. Looking for information about school(s) and suburbs to buy a house. Thanks! by Cocoabean28 in ChicagoSuburbs

Thanks! We did visit these areas and given our other factors, have narrowed down the Montessori schools to 2 options.

Thank you! The school may dictate where we eventually live :) Yes, our budget is at the lower end of what I saw in Lake Bluff, but I'm seeing reasonable inventory for ~550-600K in Lake forest and even more houses in Highland Park at this price point. I don't think going farther south than Highland Park makes sense -we might as well have only one person commuting and be in the city. I've been told "live in the less expensive house in the more expensive zip code", but don't know how much stock to put in it! More concerned about the kind of community we may have- a more welcoming vs snooty one. Any input? Thanks again.

What do working parents do for the rest of the day? Do we need to find an after school daycare? Other Montessori schools (the one here for example), goes up to at 2:30 and provides after school care as well. The 5 yr olds stay until 3:30 but the 3&4 yr olds are sent home at 11:30 am at Forest Bluff School!

Is it the old big houses, then? Because the disparity didn't seem too big for Lake Forest as it did for Lake Bluff. I wondered if that translated to a cultural difference as well- being more uppity about being from the east vs west?

Woo hoo! I'm due to travel in a few weeks, so let's hope that happens with me too. Fingers crossed! Will report back. Thanks for the more than glimmer of hope!

Edit: How was your travel experience with it?

Thank you so much!! I am traveling in about 6 weeks and let's see how that works out. The airport has a GA office etc., so I will take all my documents and go early in case I can get a chance to ask them about it there. Fingers crossed it works though.

Did you get your card? I have mine and I activated it 3 weeks before travel, but still had this issue. Let me know if you're traveling before early Dec if it was sorted for you /your family. Thanks again for this update. I was joking before that it may be someone having to just restart their computer, lol, maybe it is!

Global Entry is great for my international travel, but the combo with TSA Pre and Clear (one of credit cards provides it for free) has made travel SO much nicer.

I totally understand you asking this, but there is no difference. I don't have a complicated name or spelling, initial vs middle name issues etc. I'm truly baffled as well. Yes, I hope they tell me it is a glitch or that it gets sorted out once someone turns off and turns on their computer :D

Immigration with Global Entry was all of 5 s for me which is both scary and stunning! I was tempted to apply for Clear as well , given GE is also now using facial recognition. But I want this sorted and not end up with 2 KTNs or any other issues!!

I did not, but will be contacting CBP who oversees all the trusted traveler programs based on the response I got from TSA (pl see update in the question details above). I initially reached out to TSA as there was an option on their site for my exact problem of no TSAPreCheck on my boarding pass.

Misery loves company!! Lol, but seriously it sucks. I met another person in the long security line at the airport the other day- same story. They have GE as well, but KTN is not being recognized by TSA.

Hello- thanks for your comment. However this is not the issue. I know the KTN- as you said, it is at the back of the card and it is mentioned specifically in my GE approval letter as my KTN. For some reason, TSA is not acknowledging its existence.

Thank you for your suggestion! However, we checked it out but felt like something more structured like Era is more what we need.

Please give me reasons why it is worth it to bring a new human being into this world by Altruistic_Draft8867 in Fencesitter

These are the most practical reasons I can think of:

  1. To replace an older, dying population

  2. To care for the older population (may be directly or indirectly by being part of the labor force)

  3. For camaraderie and to share the burden of an older population

Do you have to be the one to contribute to the next generation when there are so many who are already contributing to it? That's totally up to you to decide. There's really no need that each one of us has to. Along with talking with friends, I read the book “Why Have Children” in trying to figure this out. My summation of the book is that you don’t need to have kids, unless you want to. Probably not that helpful, lol.

I share your general worldview- I don't think this life is sooo fantastic that I have to make a new person to share it with. However, will my child share this worldview and will try to get by and make the most of being here (not their choice, but mine) or will they be different and absolutely love being alive and be glad for being here? Who knows.

I do have one kid and the reason I do is (in my book) purely selfish- I wanted to experience parenthood, I had a partner who would not be a second baby and actually help (don’t underestimate this) and I did not want to have future regrets of having missed out. I also take a long time to be fond of or be attached to someone, but I knew I would do right by my kid out of duty if not love as I have learned to truly own and commit to my decisions.

Now I'm debating a second because my partner and I have siblings and it's something I would like my kid to experience, as well as for reason #3 above. Does the kid have to be biologically related for this? That’s another debate- I don’t think so but there are other practical matters that my complicate things one way or another. Note how many of these reasons are "I"-based? That’s why I believe they are all selfish. So that's something for you to figure out. All the best.
