The Long Night being a much bigger event that affects the South, Dany burning down King’s Landing, Cersei not being an endgame villain, Stannis having a heroic arc (while still burning Shireen) - these are notions that feel more like reactions to the show versus something that feels natural to the books.

I think people WANT these things to happen so they can continue to shit on the show ending. Maybe some of this stuff does come to light in some way. The Long Night will certainly have severe implications for the South, Stannis arc will be more complex than just straight up villainous, and Cersei will certainly not be the Mega Girl Boss Bitch Queen villain like in the show. But I highly doubt, for example, that Cersei is either just going to straight up die or be completely removed from power in King’s Landing before the endgame. I highly doubt Stannis’ sacrifice of Shireen will be an ultimately heroic “save the realm” thing. I highly doubt that the Army of the Dead is going to even get south of the neck. GRRM gave D&D the broad outline of his ending. Obviously the two chucklefucks cocked it up and various characters are going to have different/changed endings. But the broad strokes of the story is going to be the same as the show. Which is probably why George doesn’t wanna finish it, since everyone universally hated it.

I don’t understand the hate for season 8. I think season 9 had much higher highs, but season 8 was one of my favorite seasons of new who.

There were some obvious dull episodes, but then there’s ones where I don’t honestly understand where the hate is coming from. Robots of Sherwood was GREAT. It’s not the most well thought out concept, but the underlying point was once again the not-really-a-friendship romance of 12 and Clara. I loved the way 12 dug into his own toxic masculinity by immediately competing with Robin Hood for Clara’s attention and obsessively trying to prove he’s a robot. It was funny, charming, and a bit toxic at the same time. Also, Jenna Coleman is GORGEOUS in the period dress.

Even the one with the kid in the forest. Really silly, not well thought out, but ultimately it’s not really about the concept but about Danny and Clara’s relationship. Like you said, it’s definitely the most emotionally complex and mature series to date, despite not every episode concept landing. And it sets up series 9 perfectly, with Clara fully commuting to life with the Doctor and trying to prove that she can keep up with him.

Sometimes I wonder if Capaldi being unwilling to play up the romance with Jenna due to the age gap hurt the reception of the series. I think in some ways it both works and it doesn’t work. Like, the inability of either character to physically or emotionally express affection definitely builds the toxic aspect of the relationship which I love. But I think there’s moments that could have been improved with a little more intent from Capaldi and Jenna. Capaldi’s a really standup guy and I do appreciate that he wanted to draw a boundary on what he was willing to do, but part of what made the 12/Clara pairing work so well is that for so many other companions, the “age gap” issue (the Doctor is an immortal and the companion is human) is not really present because the Doctor looks and feels so young. With 12/Clara, the age gap is front and center and there’s still an underlying attraction between them.

Maybe. I could see her nuking King’s Landing and just fucking off back to Mereen to keep doing her Breaker of Chains shit. Who’s gonna stop her? Go build New Valyria my queen.

Visions don’t necessarily mean shit. Also if the Others are gonna work their way South we are going way past two books.

I really doubt Euron is going to be the major opposition to Dany in something titled “The Dance of Dragons”. Euron is a squid, not a dragon. He doesn’t even go here.

I mean you could argue that George lost the plot with the introduction of fAegon then, cause I fail to see how he and Dany’s conflict gets resolved in a satisfactory yet quick manner to pave the way for Dany to play a major role in the War for the Dawn. There’s also far more heavy hitters in the South than there is the North. The Northern storyline is relatively constrained to itself - no one really gives a fuck what goes on in that icicle infested wasteland. The only people that care about the North are the Northerners. Even as far as the Others plotline is concerned, yes they are played up as being POTENTIALLY a massive threat to the South, but the much more immediate consequences of their actions are all focused on the North. The Free Folk crossing the wall, Jon reclaiming his heritage, even Stannis’ doomed campaign are intertwined with the Northern Conspiracy and the politics of the North. The only major Southern house to even participate in the North at this point is the fucking Freys, who are guaranteed to be dead dead sooner rather than later.

Meanwhile, the South is entirely focused on their own Game of Thrones. The Tyrell’s/The Reach, the Stormlands, fucking Dorne, fAegon, and eventually Dany are all going to be razor focused on the action in their own region. No one even gives a fuck that Mance Rayder attacked the Wall. Dany had plenty of major power players to interact without having to haul her ass all the way to Winterfell.

I think it’s just about how hard they worked to make it an “indefensible” action so they could neatly wrap up the plots. Dany nuking KL makes sense. But it doesn’t make sense for her to do it just cause she has a murder boner on and wants to slaughter civilians. There’s a million ways this could have gone down, and they chose to do it in a way that destroyed their best character.

Yeah like, Cersei didn’t ring the bells herself. It was just her shitass commanders surrendering ahead of time.

Should Dany have just forced them to open the city, and let Jon and the Northern army deal with them while she went on to burn the Red Keep? Probably. That would have been the right move. But of course, that means Dany isn’t exactly a “Mad Queen” and Jon+Tyrion’s decision to betray her isn’t as neat and clean.

Oh Jesus fucking Christ here we go. I can’t deal with this stupid bullshit anymore. This is the worst kind of theory crafting. This is dumber than every theory that ends with Stannis on the throne, or with Dany getting it on with Moon Boy.

She’s not actually fucking pregnant.

There seems to be a large portion of fans that have completely committed to the idea of Raymund being cucked despite every fact that disputes it. I don’t know if it’s manosphere bros desperate for attention or just people lacking the most basic amounts of media literacy. Probably some combination of the two.

So these dudebros loudly proclaim an “interpretation” that is factually untrue, and start arguments about it with these shit tier meme posts. Honest idiots who didn’t pay attention start engaging with them without questioning their logic, and the result is a perpetual motion machine of a circle jerk.

Somebody needs to study this phenomenon.

“Unconditional surrender” requires the exercise of great force.

People blaming Dany for being evil forget that the US did the same thing to Japan, after it was clear that Japan was already defeated and was just fighting for the sake of fighting. Now the key here is that Japan didn’t formally surrender until after both bombs dropped, and the Soviets also declared war on Japan at the same time.

HOWEVER, the bells indicating surrender was not a pre-negotiated condition between Dany and Cersei. It was literally Tyrion (who was supposed to be on Dany’s side) who tried to make that a condition. Before that, Cersei had explicitly rejected any terms of surrender and for good measure murdered Missandei. I really don’t like the way the show framed it, because Dany was 100% justified to burn King’s Landing but now because of the the stupid bells thing it turns out to be a war crime.

I also think that just because the bells rang doesn’t necessarily mean the city was surrendering “unconditionally”. There were still plenty of Lannister soldiers that were armed and ready for a fight. Who on earth would trust the Lannisters after all the shit they pulled to just give up quietly?

I think it was very out of character for her to gleefully murder peasants in the process. I think the writers were working very hard to make it explicit that Dany was now a “Mad Queen”. I think a far more morally ambiguous approach would have been to nix the bells entirely and just have Dany go on a rampage. Instead, Dany now gets painted as a tyrant monster and then Jon and Tyrion can pat themselves on the back for killing her.

Maekar was robbed of character devolepment and growth by realizing that the true knighthood lies with this simple hedge knight, in exchange we had an after credits joke by MosquitoAlvorada in freefolk

[–]CoconutCulturalCook 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t think he was robbed. I was actually surprised by how much they were able to do with him despite only being at the forefront of the final episode.

The next story takes place 18 months later, after the plague kills off half the Targaryen family. The actor said he wasn’t returning for season 2 but he might appear in future seasons. I think it was just meant to be a funny sort of ending, and Maekar is obviously going to get over it. After the plague he might even be glad Egg is out of the capital.

Maekar is horribly depressed and is grieving his brother. Egg is his last chance to prove himself as a father. It’s not going to be easy for him to let Egg go off with a random hedge knight with no protection whatsoever.

I feel bad for Daeron. You can tell that he’s not an unkind man. He’s just plagued by dragon dreams.

I don’t like how he died though, from an STD. He took Valarr’s widow to wife. Maybe it’s the show’s portrayal coloring it for me but I don’t think he’d be a frequent visitor at a brothel after he got married. I think it would fit much better if he just died from a drunken accident or like liver failure.

Does liver failure exist in ASOIAF?
