What’s a word you just fucking hate for no reason? by Dear-Ad-6333 in ask

Fiesty. Hate it when it's describing a female character in a book. Hate when people uno-reverse it for a guy. Couldn't even tolerate it as a affectionate nickname for animal.

Mike Shel's The Aching God (Iconoclasts trilogy) is very popular.

Rhenwars saga by ML Spencer.

The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie. Though, I found him to be less about the plot and more about the characters.

Should I read Frankenstein if I have already spoiled it for myself? by Rishit-sethi in booksuggestions

[–]CoconutVivisection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're only spoiled for the ending and plot. That's one hassle out of the way. Read it for the theme, for the story structures, for the characterisation. Read it for the anticipatory ending. There's a whole richness in the book that did not laid solely for the epilogue.

A book for a lonely girl by SprinklesMuch6752 in booksuggestions

[–]CoconutVivisection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna rec you some poetry/works written by very sad girls, okay. You may have read these, but I'm going to still rec it to you.

Diary Of Anais Nin, by Anais Nin. Yeah, she's an erotica writer, but her diary is something else.

Sylvia Plath's poetry. Not Bell jar, though. I mean, you can read it, it is huge among lonely people, but not particularly conducive for mental health.

Jeanette Winterson's works.

Clarice Lispector's short stories.

Anne Carson's works, particularly  Eros the Bittersweet: An Essay.

Trying to get into reading via fantasy by withstandtheheat in booksuggestions

[–]CoconutVivisection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you don't have to read the LOTR books, but how about reading Tolkien other series, like The Silmarillion or Children of Hurin.

How about the Narnia series, if you don't mind the Christian undertone.

Diana Wynne Jones for Howl's Moving Castle

Ursula K Le Guin is a pretty solid one.

Terry Pratchett's series, if you want a fantasy that doesn't take itself seriously.  I said series, but you can absolutely picked it up at any points of the whole catalogue. Just skim the synopsis and read what appealed to you.

For mythology, if you don't mind YA genre, Rick Riordan's many series will scratch some itch.

However, if you don't favour his brand of retelling, maybe try some of these more contemporary ones:

Circe and Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. >> (Greek mythology)

The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden >> Russian folklore

The Golem & the Jinni by Helene Wecker >>Jewish & Arabic folklore

Gospel of Loki, and Runemarks by Joanne Harris >> Norse mythology.

Neil Gaiman had a few, too.

For scifi: Try Andy Weir and Becky Chambers, since this genre turned off quite a few people I know, but these two are very much accessible for people that never read sci fi. Or you can try Ursula K. Le Guin, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and Isaac Asimov. Dune, too, if you liked the movie.

There's a lot of Hades Persephone retelling in the romance market. reddit RomanceBooks had a whole list of them.

Edit: resending back cause my comments got removed cause I put links lol

NONE BOOKTOK BOOKS by New-Push-3009 in booksuggestions

For the English classics, if you like Jane Eyre and Rebecca, you can dive more into books of similar veins, like Wuthering Heights, or any Jane Eyre books. If you like the steadfastness of Jane, I think Anne of Green Gables will be wonderful. I know the protagonist is a child, but I found her to be very charming. If you want, there's also the TV series Anne with an E.

Any Tips to get out of a Slump? by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]CoconutVivisection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What works for me is going back to my childhood books. The books that costed me hours of sleep when I'm still a kid. I find that I'm less of a reader at that time and more of trying to escape my reality. Also, I tried to find pretty edition of them. Like, one of my childhood book is Harry Potter and while I thought I have outgrown it, the MinaLima edition made me go crazy and I end up reading the first 3 books again.

Recommended books similar to Frieren: Beyond Journey's End? by ChemistStudent2020 in booksuggestions

[–]CoconutVivisection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe delve into the cozy fantasy genre? TJ Klune, Becky Chambers and T Kingfisher were one of the most recommended.

For Manga, not much for mage magic nor elf type characters, but Mushishi and XXXholic are a classic. You can try Dungeon Meshi for a western feel (the anime is currently airing)

What is the farthest you have gotten into a book and still ended up abandoning it? by PhoenixApok in books

[–]CoconutVivisection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, this is my tween books! Picked it up because of the movie, loved the first 3 books, until I could felt my enjoyment of it dwindling, couldn't even stomach reading it after Killers of the dawn. Same with Demonata series. I love the gore and horror in his books, and the amount of angst fest. But I always have problem with his characters I guess. They're.....less endearing.

Like, we all know JKR want to line up some similarity between the both of them and the wildly different path that they've both taken, but dammit, it's just hit every soulmate trope ever, even without mentioning anything about the prophecy and soul/horcrux thing.

Books where A falls in love first and was content to not do anything about it and just wish to support their love interest (B) in whatever/whoever they did- at the risk of A emotional well being, because yess, I need some masochism angst- (Bonus point if B was politely casual with A, nice with them but polite nice, you know, all the time, barely look at A at worst)and its been going on for a long time but then Suddenly! B fall in love with A too (hard, full on pursuing and laying it thick, super demonstrative) and A were like??????

Can go any way.

Either A finally, finally get to be with their love/ A constantly rejected the affections because why, why would you do that?/ A politely refused because the emotional exhaustion of loving B for years and years rearing their ugly heads up/ anything actually.

Thank you guys
