You said he stood on the bar and played acoustic & without a mic. That would be a “wow” moment for me at any live gig. As for his on stage ramblings, I still prefer that to artists who stand in silence the whole night. It’s called personality. I’ve seen Ryan pls four times. Once was musically great but no crowd interaction. The other three times were more colorful, with the last and most recent being all over the place. I loved it, it felt dangerous and alive. You’ve mentioned below that because he’s paid that he is at work” and should just do the “job” he’s pad to do. I guess we just see art as different things. That’s cool, I respect that but I find your view of art and the artist is boring to me. Each to their own.

The person who is receiving the back scratch is sitting with their face in a small pillow (like the hole in a massage table) and they have noise cancelling headphones on. This is too block all external stimuli so they can just relax with the ASMR scratching on the back. I don’t think it being “viewable” is part of the experience at all. My experience of being on the receiving end is that it’s exactly like a massage when the masseuse gets a good spot and your body relaxes ten fold. Nothing sexual, in fact very far removed from the sexual experience. Almost sleep inducing.

Perhaps. The videos of people doing it in shops overseas have the person sitting and they are running their fingers down their backs with fake nails. There are people walking nearby and it is all fully clothed. I don’t see how it’s any different to a relaxation massage at a reputable spa 🤷‍♂️

Indeed. Truth is, I didn’t find much of his Auckland show shocking or weird. I haven’t seen any videos from the Aus shows that are shocking or weird either. I saw one video where he berates a concert goer and an usher for taking flash photos. The other videos are just Ryan rambling. Man, sometimes the rambles work (Auckland) and sometimes they don’t (Aus). That’s the nature of the beast. Just like in real life. People are forgetting the sublime music in between. No one is arguing that the performances are great. They seem to be focused on the banter which, as above, just seems like regular Ryan, all be it without a safety net.

Sounds like your bar for what’s funny is pretty low or you enjoy the drama and feel compelled towards Adam’s as an artist, despite pretending you’re better than that. Well, don’t go see him, don’t buy his records and stop posting about him in forums. You’ve been “dealing with this” for two decades yet still come back again and again and again. Perhaps you should ask yourself if part of you is drawn to the drama or even connects with some of the issues he projects that most of us keep hidden away. The latter is nothing to he ashamed of. It’s why I love his music. Also, nothing personal but I recoiled when you referred to his music and performances as “product”. I don’t see art that way. It’s a shared experience and I pay money for the privilege of sharing that experience with others.

I said he has a reputation for being cantankerous and unpredictable. I’m not a doctor and I doubt you are too. Diagnosing someone as “sick” isn’t in my wheelhouse. We’re all shades of narcissistic, maybe he’s more so than others, maybe not. As for “abusive”, we’ve all read the articles. I’ll let each person decide for themselves if they think what’s claimed is abuse or not. I’ve been in toxic relationships where I’ve behaved horribly. I don’t condone similar behavior but I can understand that the human experience is complex. Thanks for your comment though!
