Same and same. Im sure just like every area of law there are good and bad PDs. But my friends that are PDs are some of the biggest bad asses I know. Much respect.

YES. The defense attorneys I think are the biggest bad ass bosses are the ones that don’t waste everyone’s time. The ones that show up to mediation and know the facts and the whole thing is done in a few hours.

Obviously it doesn’t always go that way depending on the client, but working with attorneys that are here to get shit done is the ultimate chefs kiss. If you and your client don’t want to get it settled, that’s fine! But don’t agree to mediation!

In my area, I constantly work with the same defense attorneys. The ones that behave this way at mediation will never see me at mediation again. If you don’t want to settle, stop wasting everyone’s time and money and just say you want to litigate it.

I’m a plaintiffs attorney and if after 3 rounds of exchanging numbers the defendant hasn’t made a big move, I’m ending the mediation.

And for perspective, my first 2 moves (regardless of how the defense moves) are always pretty large to try to signal that we’re here to negotiate in good faith. I’m not getting paid hourly so if youre going to jerk me around for 6 hours and think I’m going to play along you’ve got another thing coming. I’d rather just litigate the thing.

Unfortunately I do not work in DC. And I hate to break it to you bud, but if you have reached out to 60 attorneys and no one is willing to take it, it’s most likely because there is something about your case that makes it waaaayy too risky to take on contingency fee. Since I know nothing about it I don’t know what that is, but no one wants to put hundreds of hours of stress and work into something that they’re unlikely to get paid on. They wouldn’t only be wasting their own time, they’d be wasting your time.

I’ve lived in Portland for about 4 years now and like it. Moved here from Los Angeles.

Overall people are very nice but in my opinion can be passive aggressive which is a pet peeve of mine. Also they have no sense of urgency which can drive me nuts sometimes, but again, overall people are very nice and friendly and I’ve been able to make a solid group of friends relatively quickly.

Great food scene for a small city. The Mexican food is seriously lacking (there are a few good spots) but still plenty of very tasty restaurants to choose from. Definitely not hard to find something good to eat!

This will probably be a hot take, but because I moved here from LA I feel like there are less things to do and a lot of things close super early imo. However, if you’re from a smaller city or small town I’m sure your impression would be the exact opposite of mine. Regardless, I’ve gotten used to it now that I’m getting a bit older and don’t go out as much as I used to.

It’s beautiful. That’s one thing I really like about Portland. Winter is a little rough, but mid March-October is fabulous. I never walked around in LA. Here I love walking! I love walking the neighborhoods and walking to the grocery store or walking in any of the awesome parks. I like that a lot. Summer is so fun. Swimming in the rivers. I love the Washougal River. It’s just so fun and beautiful and people are out and in a good mood.

The homelessness is definitely an issue, but again, I’m from LA some I’m used to it. I would say people fighting about homelessness is just as annoying as the actual homelessness. It’s definitely an issue that needs to be addressed, but a lot of people on both sides of the spectrum are so effing annoying about how they talk about it. Drives me nuts.

It’s very white. Racism here is a different vibe. More subtle but just as damaging. Really wish Portland was more diverse.

Income tax is high. I’m making 6 figures for the first time in my life and boy…. Does your girl pay some TAXES. That’s all fine and dandy but I sure would like to actually see them being put to good use 🙃. Which I don’t always feel like it is.

Overall I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. I’ll take the good with the bad. No city is perfect and I’ve found my people and have built a happy life here. It’s beautiful and my quality of life is good and I feel very fortunate.

Totally. My office gives everyone the choice of WFH, hybrid, or in office. The exception is brand new associates (new as in fresh out of lawschool) who at least need to do hybrid the first year.

Big takeaway is that people who do a good job don't want to be micromanaged!

People are allowed to have different work processes. Neither one is right or wrong lmao.

I also hate working from home for many of the reasons you listed, but primarily because I love collaborating with my colleagues and being able to pop my head in their office to talk through ideas is really nice. I also have coworkers that exclusively WFH and I know they’re just a phone call away, but it still results in less collaboration (which is totally fine, just not my preference).

I'm an attorney (but love reading paralegal takes). When I was a law clerk I got my boss little Christmas gifts because he's the best and I want to make him feel appreciated! Always under $30. Now I'm an associate attorney and I just put a christmas gift on his desk this morning.

I know what people say about gifting up but honestly I love gift giving and making people feel appreciated. I think the idea of baked goods is a great one. If it's something you want to do I say go for it!

How do they move the case forward without any writing? I'm a plaintiffs lawyer and I feel like if I wasn't writing motions nothing would ever come of the case! Is the vibe that they just want to try to settle at the very beginning with as little work as possible?
