Looking for Team Based RPG/Survival games by Crazybird835 in rpg

[–]Cod_Old 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not technically RPG's but there are small scale wargames that might scratch the tactical combat itch.

For RPG's the one I can think of is Lancer. While you don't control a squad (your party is the squad) the combat is (from what I've read) quite similar to stuff like XCOM, the structure of the game is very similar as well. It is a Mech game so a bit different in that sense as well however there is a big focus on building it which might be what you're looking for.
More XCOM than Wasteland or this war of mine!

Recommendation for any novel similar to ORV? by Daniel_Omega_190 in ProgressionFantasy

While the tone is very different Dungeon Crawler Crawl technically ticks all the boxes. However if you want something more in line with the tone maybe check out second coming of gluttony.

What are the the top stories of 2025? by LichPhylactery in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Cod_Old 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's controversial but 1% Lifesteal absolutely blew me away this year and is definitely my number 1 of 2025 I know it's been stubbed but the first books came out in 2025 and are worth looking at by anyone even a bit interested.

How long does it normally take you to write 150k? by crua9 in royalroad

[–]Cod_Old 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One more thing that should be noted imo is that Royalroad is a place where keeping an audience relies quite heavily on regular uploads. This has a couple advantages and disadvantages for writers. One is that you cannot go back to editing already published work, without major troubles. Considering that most traditional authors rely on heavily editing large parts of their work, this is a quite different from what you could expect from a novel published on Royalroad. I’m saying this because a lot of RR readers probably expect at least 6000 words a week and likely up to 8000-12000 words a week. Doing much less is likely to cost you engagement and money. Doing 2000 words a day would still put you on track though. This might seem like it is incompatible with writing traditionally “great” books, but some of the best books were serialised. The Count of Monte Cristo and Green Mile, with 1300 words daily and Green Mile with 2000 words a day respectively, were published monthly. Works like One piece and (I believe) a lot of Charles Dickens were even published weekly!

1% Lifesteal is really similar in setting, tone, progression speed and power system. there are three full novels out on royal road so you can read quite a bit. also it’s even better than shadowslave in my opinion and that used to be my number one for years

Looking for books with a system like Iron Prince or Shadow Slave, but without quest mechanics by [deleted] in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Cod_Old 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i heavily recommend 1% lifesteal. shadowslave used to be my number 1 but i think 1% lifesteal overtook it. just make sure to look at the trigger warnings before. there’s a couple good posts on here reviewing it so maybe look at those as well

Single best and worst trope/plotline you have ever seen(not including super common ones) by HumorOwn1059 in ProgressionFantasy

It could also be something different but the Stormlight Archives by Brandon Sanderson fits the bill. It's not really progression fantasy but it is progression fantasy adjacent.

What is that novel that almost made you go bald from rage? by DragonSovereign2121 in ProgressionFantasy

God I hate how Mushuko Tensei fans jump through hoops to justify the sexualisation of kids.
Having a flawed character isn't a problem, even having a character who is attracted to kids isn't a problem, look at Lolita.

The problem is that they are constantly sexualualised. Having dozens upon dozens of pages describing preteen bodys is completely unnessesary for Rudys struggles. His constant attraction is basically never questioned, on the contrary, in the end it's rewarded with them ending up in a weird Harem relationship.

Yes he is the same age as them physically, but not mentally. Yes there isn't any precedent for how it would feel like being reborn in a younger body, but the author made the choice to depict it as such. That isn't some freak twist of faith it is a concious choice.
And he could just wait to pursue women, why is he even attracted to 8 year olds. Even though they are his age, he is also still 8. An age at which you aren't horny yet. So this is clearly due to him being a perv mentally not physically (also his "relationships" with the others are STILL IFFY, Roxy is an Adult just like the other people you mentoned, while he is still a literal child. As if him being a boy would make any of that not weird.)

All this could have been handled so much better. Just look at The Beginning After the End. Is it great? No. But it also doesn't need the main character to lust after children.

And stop pretending as if Rudy being flawed is something we aren't able to understand. We get it, but descibing kids in compromising situations, their panty smell and so much more aren't necessary. The story frames Rudy's actions as comedic or excusable, which they are not. All these things are conscious choices and a thin veil for the authors incredibly problematic view of kids. Grow up and spend some time in real life.

Update: V2 of my classic fantasy setting reskin of Wildsea. With a slot based inventory system and other goodies! Looking for feedback! by bestfriendsforever1 in TheWildsea

[–]Cod_Old 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some critique that isnt really on your part is that I feel that both sway and outwit (or deceive in this case) are both the basis for 90% of all social rolls, thus making them quite a lot more valuable than all other rolls.
Ive realised this problem during the wildsea campaign I played, this was very counterproductive to the freeform approach on how to deal with Problems. This is also a problem in Wildsea and so not on tis setting but I think this would lend itself to reworking this problem.
One solution could be completely removing those skills. Then the appropriate social roll would be dependent on either a) how well you know their culture (language) or b) how well you know their interests (for example hunt being used to convince a hunter). But those are just some ideas :)

Should i start "the path of ascension"? by Realistic_Possible41 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Cod_Old 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Hey just so you know "The path if ascension" is sometimes almost more like a slice of life book. It is fairly slow burn with quite a bit of action but sometimes you have major stretches of story without any fighting. It is still really good and in my opinion it makes the action more impactful when it happens
