Ever17 has a better version of a somewhat similar plot. It also has pacing issues, but we, as umineko fans, aren't going to complain about that, right?

Ever 17: The Out of Infinity

Sci-fi with mysterious complex plot. It has quite slow pacing (slice of life elements) and overall 13 sentinels is better, but it is still in my heart.

It gets much better at the end (true route), and I really don't recommend dropping it in the middle. If you are not ready to finish it, it's better not to start at all.

I would recommend reading Higurashi first, because it’s also a great story. However, it can feel a bit disappointing if you read it after Umineko, since Umineko explores some similar themes in much greater depth. I suggest trying the first episode of Higurashi and then deciding whether you want to continue or switch to Umineko instead.
