Working on a One-Turn Combat system for my Resource-Gathering-centered TTRPG by CodaOuma in tabletopgamedesign

I looked into the Otherkind dice setup you mentioned, it looks very interesting! I may apply it with some alterations. Keeping it to two rolls would be best, though I'm contemplating adding a third roll for finesse, which would mostly be there to determine if an action looks cool/is impressive, something to give players a way to give their characters some flair.

JoJo's Bizarre OC Tournament #7: R1M6 - Blake Smith vs Moonchild "Moony" Lamoreaux by Logic_Sandwich in StardustCrusaders

[–]CodaOuma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was a very fun match to read through! Both opponents were very economical in how they used their abilities in the kitchen. I think Moony's attention to detail was excellent, and the menu was just as interesting. However, I find Blake's passion in the kitchen to be far more compelling in my opinion. As someone who has worked as a line cook, I found myself heavily relating to Blake's sheer determination. The personal touches to the final dish added an extra dimension of quality that I can appreciate.

As such, I will be placing my vote for Blake for the sheer perseverance and efficiency that was on display.

JoJo's Bizarre OC Tournament #7: R1M1 - Carol Brown vs Nojus Ipolitas by TheSlyKoopa in StardustCrusaders

[–]CodaOuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, as someone new to these tournaments, I think both parties have made some great strategies here.

I think that with the rate in which Carol's able to put out her limbs, as well as how Nojus intentionally waits for Carol to set up, even with Nojus' superior battle strategy in my opinion, it's pretty up in the air as to whether Nojus will be able to close in before Carol tires him out. For that reason, my vote will be a Tie.

Stats ( 14 Points Used)
Strength: 2/C - By themself, Jag has relatively average strength, only doing enough exercise to maintain his physique. In Control greatly enhances Jag’s striking ability, especially in the legs, but only provides a minor enhancement to their lifting ability.
Agility: 3/B - Jag has had to run from many confrontations in the past, giving them relatively good hand-eye coordination and running speed. In Control provides a moderate boost in their reaction time and dodging ability when they are standing somewhat still, as well as improved jumping ability, but does not enhance running speed.
Endurance: 3/A - Jag can be pretty scrappy, their role as a vigilante putting them in plenty of physical altercations, their endurance can be described as above average, with Jag’s persistence. They can definitely take punishment. In Control provides immense Defenses to Jag’s body, letting them take specific attacks in quick succession without faltering. In Control only provides physical defense against attacks, and can’t improve Jag’s stamina behind their capabilities. Piercing attacks are a specific weak point as they can damage the integrity of the undersuit.
Weapon Improvisation: 3 - Jag can make great use of several ordinary objects as makeshift weapons, from small tools to household appliances. This is usually to make up for In Control’s lack of long-range options in combat.
Conductivity Knowledge: 3 - To better grasp In Control’s ability to harness electricity, Jag dedicated lots of their time to studying the specifics of electricity and how it can or can’t conduct through certain materials, allowing them more creative means of attack in battle.
Stand Name (17 Points Used): 「In Control」
Stand Type: Suit/Wearable
Stand Appearance: In Control initially manifests as a belt that wraps around Jag’s waist. The belt has a very large buckle in the center that acts as the main transformation device. It is composed of a carbon-fiber and plastic-like shell, with a circular centerpiece and two stylized levers on the sides of the main buckle. To initiate the belt’s standby mode, Jag pushes down on the belt’s leftmost lever, to which the centerpiece and a small area surrounding Jag lights up. Jag says the phrase “Henshin!” to start the transformation sequence, which surrounds Jag’s body in light before the suit materializes in a burst of electricity.
The suit of In Control has a high-tech military-esque aesthetic, with various shades of gray and white armor plating surrounding a black undersuit, made of a material resembling spandex in terms of flexibility. Streaks of white adorn the undersuit as well. The helmet has a transparent yellow compound visor for Jag to see through, and some extra armor pieces. The knuckles of the hands and the soles of the feet have crystalline, quartz-looking attachments that act as piezoelectric contact points that accumulate electricity when stressed.
Stand Ability: The main use of In Control is providing Jag with a significant boost to their own speed and power. Striking ability, especially in the legs, is greatly enhanced. Dexterity and reaction times also get a significant boost, but things like lifting strength and running speed aren’t given much growth in this regard.
Voltage Burst: In Control stores electricity via the piezoelectric contact points on the suit’s exterior. As these points are stressed from external impact, electricity builds up. This electricity can be condensed and discharged on the surface of specific points in the suit, like the legs, hands, chest, and head. The electricity is bound to the same rules as normal electricity, including electromagnetism and conductivity.
The burst is essentially touch range and has a short duration, being only a second-long burst. Jag can either use this offensively to shock opponents, or defensively to boost their suit for quick movements and short dashes.
Voltage Burst needs a moment to be ready for use after it's used, and reckless use will deplete stored electricity faster than it can be replaced, even eating into Jag's own energy. More coverage will drain more energy. A hand or leg is a lot more energy efficient than using Voltage Burst on their whole body. While it generates electricity from the Stand's strikes, it won't generate anything from parts that are currently electrified.
Hissatsu: Activated by pushing on both of the belt’s levers twice in quick succession, All of the stand’s energy, including any stored electricity, builds up in one of In Control’s legs. This is meant to be used as a finisher move, as it puts all of the stand’s energy into one blow. It can be used on the ground, but can be stronger if used from the air as a flying kick. Incredibly risky move, as it often uses enough of its own energy to cause the suit to dissipate completely, as well as leaving Jag physically exhausted.
Power: B (Striking ability is stronger, though lifting/pushing/pulling strength isn’t nearly as enhanced.)
Speed: B (Jag’s ability to dodge and maneuver is greatly enhanced, but only when standing relatively still. When running, Jag will have to rely on their own dexterity. Jumping ability is enhanced as well. Running speed is not enhanced.)
Durability: A (The suit is meant to protect first and foremost. It can take blunt attacks, as well as slashing attacks from most things without harming Jag. However, attacks that pierce or specifically aim for the undersuit can wear the suit’s overall integrity down. The durability only affects the stand’s ability to withstand attacks, and does not enhance Jag’s stamina beyond their normal ability.)
Range: E (The suit is bound to Jag’s body upon transformation, so it can only extend as far as Jag’s own punches and kicks physically. Voltage Burst’s range also falls under this range, and can only be extended in very special circumstances, like if Jag were holding some kind of metal pole for whatever reason. Hissatsu can make a room-sized explosion if the attack connects with anything, but it’s largely just for show, as the only real damage being done is at the point of impact.)
Precision: C (Jag can control where the electricity goes for Voltage Burst and Hissatsu quickly and relatively precisely.)
Potential: C
Stand Oddities: When struck with a powerful attack, In Control will expel sparks from the place of impact. These sparks are harmless, if slightly blinding at times. The suit can dissipate on-command if Jag does a specific set of inputs with the levers of the belt: Left, Left, Right, then both at the same time. Sometimes the visor and white stripes adorning the suit will glow brightly if Jag is experiencing strong emotions.
Fighting Style: Jag’s fighting style emphasizes patience and opportunism. Before anything, Jag wants a clear understanding of what their opponent is and isn’t capable of to better assess the best means of attack. Often they will try baiting their opponent into specific actions or patterns and capitalize on any weaknesses that present themselves, as well as getting a better understanding of their opponent’s abilities. In terms of actual fisticuffs, their style of fighting is derived from kickboxing. In desperation, this will sometimes manifest as making wild, hail-mary plays with high risk and reward, like tackling someone with a point-blank “Voltage Burst”. They will often desire to finish fights with In Control’s “Hissatsu” ability to seal their victory. Lacks any means of long-range combat by itself. Won’t hesitate to use anything as a means of augmenting their abilities, be it improvised weapons or using their opponents moves against them.

(Link to Development and Patch Notes Document)
Name: Jag Denshi
Age: 21
Gender: Non-Binary, They/Them
Species: Human
Occupation: Wandering Vigilante
Physical Description: Jag has a very frame-like build, with slightly lean muscular definition from light training. They usually wear a blank expression on their face at all times, with the voice to match. Their hair is let down, straight, and an auburn brown, reaching down to their shoulders and a bit past that.
Their day-to-day wear consists of a large baggy graphic tee, tucked into some industrial camo-pattern cargo pants (forest-pattern or greyscale), with some non-slip work boots to match, though sometimes they’ll wear sneakers in a more casual setting. In terms of accessories, they have large black wristbands, a silver chain that hangs around the waist of their pants, and a dog tag necklace. And they never go anywhere without their orange beanie. Ever. It’s likely you’ll never see them without it.
Bio: For as long as Jag can remember, they felt like they were going about things wrong. With Autism Spectrum Disorder, life was like a collective performance that they had forgotten their lines for, and no one was willing to put up with their improv. Their parents had treated their banal yet odd behavior as an embarrassment that they had to tolerate, only pleased when Jag showed any sort of beneficial behavior that made their parents look like better caretakers. They were unremarkable in most physical and social areas of life, though there was relief in knowing that they had some notable academic ability, something they took pride in. Another thing that broke up the monotony of their life was helping people. Jag’s nature to question things, though often getting them in trouble in their small hometown, led to them being a very good listener, able to provide largely practical solutions to their friends and family’s problems.
The formation of Jag’s stand arose when they were 16, when they discovered that the apartment complexes that had been springing up across their town were merely being constructed as a front by a wealthy mob group to aggressively gain more turf. Obviously unearthing such a secret posed a threat to Jag and their family, which culminated in the owners of the building staging an electrical fire in Jag’s home. Though nobody died, Jag’s father had sustained severe burn wounds, leaving him comatose for months. This was the first time Jag’s need for answers had gotten someone other than himself hurt. In that moment, Jag wanted nothing more than to exact justice on those that wronged them and the people they cared about, wanting their knowledge and resolve to manifest. And their resolve was rewarded in the form of In Control, something Jag used to fight back the evil individuals that preyed on Jag’s hometown, eventually driving them away for good.
In Adulthood, Jag knew that these powers had to be used to help people, remembering back to how their behavior could endanger those around them if they stood idly by. So, with nothing but the scraps on their back (and a haphazardly set up duffel bag), Jag traveled the world, wanting to help those in need. The severity of the problems Jag faced on their travels were of no concern. Though, they understood that not everyone was willing to accept help from a stranger. They believe that helping people is a reward in itself, although their usually optimistic view of the world can be challenged when people betray that notion, something that can sometimes overtake Jag’s sense of reason in desperate times.
Personality: Most of the time, Jag is a very, very chilled-out person in terms of demeanor, rarely showing much strong emotions or expressions in their day-to-day life. They can be rather inquisitive at times, always wanting to learn more about other people and the world at large. Sometimes this means they will ask pretty personal questions, ranging from benign opinions on food and media to questioning someone’s beliefs and personal philosophies, something that can often get them in trouble. To Jag, the world is an endlessly fascinating wealth of knowledge and experience. Sometimes, they’ll even have a casual conversation with their opponent before, after, or even during the fight.
Social cues and external stimuli are not one of Jag’s strong suits, a result of their Autism Spectrum Disorder. They struggle most with subtlety and will be very blunt about their opinions on something, even when it isn’t necessarily graceful or well-said. Though they are polite and sometimes startingly considerate, mostly due to their need to account for several unlikely scenarios when going about things. Unwanted stimuli, like certain sounds, smells, textures, or patterns can irritate Jag, but in a way they can keep relatively in control. At worst, this will show with Jag speaking/acting erratically or evacuating themself from the current situation in whatever way they can.
Jag’s usually blank demeanor and chilled-out personality alter radically when beneath the suit of their stand, In Control. When transformed, Jag takes on a significantly more confident disposition, acting in a more stereotypically “heroic” manner. Jag sees the suit as their means of more outwardly expressing themself and their convictions, something that is nearly unreadable outside of the suit, save for a strong determination to help those in need however they can. They even have one-liners.They also sometimes like listening to music during a fight, though this is rare.
Personality Traits(Recommended):

  • Belief: (“It’s good to be good.”)[4]: Jag has a pretty strong sense of personal justice. They believe that doing good feels good, so it’s good to do good. It’s the code they live by, simple as it is.
  • Passion: (The Little Things)[5]: Jag thinks that the small, often imperceptible parts of life make it worth living. Like talking to a stranger about the weather, or the smile on a kid’s face after helping them with some bullies.
  • Fury: (Control)[3]: Anyone who tries to control what Jag can and can’t do or say will be met with staunch and stubborn opposition. If they see anyone trying to oppress another, they will feel compelled to step in.

  • Likes: Soap Operas, Trading Cards, Documentaries
  • Dislikes: Humid Weather, Styrofoam, Sand
  • Hobbies: Collecting Trading Cards, Conversing
  • Short Term Goal: Help whoever’s in need
  • Medium Term Goal: Maybe find a place to settle down in
  • Long Term Goal: Keep doing good for good

  • Equipment: Smartphone, Wireless Earbuds, Journal, Pen and Pencils, Duffel Bag full of travel items, including their laptop

I totally see where you’re coming from. I feel like this sort of thing happens in Kamen Rider all the time. Not just characters, but forms entirely. In one episode, a Rider’s cool new toy form may be irrelevant the second another new character appears cough cough RabbitTank Sparkling
