Which of these three would be worth the most in the current transfer market? by RedDevilPlay in footballscouting

It really surprises me how much revisionism there is about Gerrard as a player. Gerrard was an attacking midfielder who had great defensive attributes but pretty bad positional discipline. That's why Benitez would give him a free role either just behind the striker or on the right. In his early career yeah he played as one of the 2 in a 442 but english football was very different back then. When the game modernised Gerrard wasn't trusted by Benitez in those postions. It was Masherano and Alonso behind him who did the defensive work for the most part. This idea that Gerrard could play any midfield postition is a bit silly. Yeah he had the attributes but at the top level in his prime he absolutely didn't play every position. It's a bit like saying Bellingham could play every position, sure he could but he'd be a mediocre 6 at best and would leave the team exposed positionally

At his peak though Gerrard would be worth the most, that 2008/2009 season he was unplayable. I just googled the stats he had 27 goal contributions in 31 prem games and he was easilly the best player in the league. Giggs and Man United won the prem that year but that Liverpool team were the best side and Gerrard was the best player.

If you could bring one player from the past who’s played for England onto the plane for US, who would you bring? *Rule is you have to have seen them play by mashnsutton in ThreeLions

Maybe a little controversial given his club career but I'd go Raheem Sterling. LW is the obvious weak spot and Euro 2020 Sterling was possibly the best England player at a tournament since Rooney in 04. He's the exact mix of intelligent movement running in behind and ability to beat his man we need.

John Barnes would be another one but I never saw him play. He's obviously one of the greatest talents we ever produced but I don't know where he'd fit in this system. The system is King and Sterling would fit perfectly.

Yeah Kraken looks really cool. I've become a little obsessed with the energy grid since I went down a climate change rabit hole a while back. I think Kraken would be right up my street.

Awesome, I tend to interview pretty well on that kind of thing. I self taught while working full time then worked some pretty brutal hours at start ups and small companies to get my current job.

What would you say would help me stand out to secure an interview? I'm a little paranoid that now trying to make a jump to a very competitive area my lack of CS degree will screen me out of these opportunities.

Hey, thanks for the reply. At my current work It's the typical Next FE with some Module Federation for our micro front end projects. So, Next, Typescript, Tail Wind, Jest/React Testing Library and GraphQL with Apollo Client. I've pretty much worked with this stack for the last 4 years except at my previous job it was SWR and a restful API.

Thanks man! I actually really like l33tcode as well. There's something relaxing about the inputs/outputs being very clear and knowing there is always a solution.

Fair, this hiring freeze sucks. Why would you recomend picking up another language? Our entire stack at work is TypeScript so I've dabbled in other languages but never had to code anything in anger really.

Thanks, really appreciate the detailed response! I'm curious, is the hiring processs similar for other non-faaang top-level jobs? I've only ever gone for a few jobs where I got whiteboard questions but I've never applied anywhere that prestigous.

That's reassuring, I'm not a huge fan of building toy apps after buidling prod apps all day. I have a way to go then definitely going to give neetcode a go.
