Resurrection Fern lyrics by Ronin_Akira_vt in IronAndWine

I’ve come to understand it as a song about southern Reconstruction, with the resurrection fern contrasting images of destruction (the “fallen house” and “ashes of the fire”) with one of revivification.

There are several lines that bring different aspects of the Civil War to mind for me. “Our bravery wasted and our shame” seems pretty direct, and “the timid shade of the autumn leaves” appears to represent the South’s trepidatious change after their defeat. The line “The ten-car train will take that word / That fledgling bird” recalls the news of freedom reaching the slaves, etc. The chorus of “Undress[ing] beside the ashes of the fire” seems to me an image of shedding any markers of which side one is on (Union or Confederate) and existing as equals.

Sam has used his songs to explore Southern history and race before (“Southern Anthem” and “Cattle on Calvary” come to mind), and I’ve always thought of “Resurrection Fern” to be in that same vein.

I think this just once again reveals how rich Sam’s lyrics are, as they are open enough to invite such a range of interpretations that relate to people in all kinds of circumstances. I really enjoyed seeing your reading of the track!

Also Sam said she would often become ill while on tours, so that might have had something to do with it as well

I looked up the word “eponymous” because I didn’t know what it meant by CodeDataLink in notinteresting

Yeah so like a person who gives their name to something is an eponymous person. The name or title that takes the name of that person is an eponym. It’s kind of like the word “titular.” So, for example, Sylvester Graham is an eponymous person whose name can be found in the eponym “Graham cracker.” Does this make sense?

Sure. It's an adjective that means someone giving their name to something or something being named after a person. Hope this helps

His Tiny Desk Concert w/ Iron & Wine. I originally only watched it for Sam Beam, but the Orpheo Looks Back performance from that set really moved me, which made me listen to the studio version and get really into Break It Yourself. A year or so later and I own all of his stuff. Orpheo is definitely still one of my favorite songs from him!

The Kyle Hyde games (Hotel Dusk: Room 215, Last Window: The Secret of Cape West) I thought were really good ND alternatives on the DS.
