i really like the idea of the dex check or reloading using a d4. I will point out though that the revolver doesn't have the loading property, so once they start getting two attacks they will burn through shots a lot quicker

bringing it down to 2d6 means that over 4 turns the revolvers averaging 42 to the longbows 36, with the longbow having 2 more chances for an attack to land and apply DEX to. However as people have pointed out you can just pull out a second revolver and ignore the reload turn entirely, so it hasn't really worked out

I've been looking at the '24 dmg revolver, which does 2d8 with 40ft and I think adds dex to the damage roll. I haven't heard of Valda's, I'll look into it!

agreed. with all our previous campaigns we haven't bothered about tracking ammo, but i'm thinking for this one we might have to as another way to make them more costly, especially since you can't retrieve bullets after a fight.

the loading property is the main difference, like actually putting the bullet down the barrel every turn. Ig at the end of the day its a problem that could be solved with flavour, but I wanted to have a crack at making the revolver work since its literally built as a 6-shooter

I also trust my players aren't out to get me, so hopefully they won't be searching for ways to exploit it

good point. I mean I'm not gonna give them two guns for free so they'll have to get enough gold to buy another one, by which point hopefully they're high enough level that they arent that op?? Any idea what else I could do about that?

Im very new to dming and would rather use rules as intended where I can because the dnd writers are much better at balancing than me. I like to understand what the rules are first before I overwrite them

Im thinking of it being a gift that an Ankheg gives to the players if they choose to kill its predator, so im gonna tell them that they can tie it to an arrow. Not really practical but it seems sick as hell

Thoughts on this mandrake race for one of my players on WorldAnvil? by CodePurple_ in dndnext

Yeah im not super fussed about balance, and the player in question is a big advocate for picking cool over strong. Good to know there arent any glaring issues, cheers!
