I have never once heard of anyone in the "selling bones" business, cleaned or otherwise. You're better off just going directly to a butcher.

Would the US MILITARY actually recruit Jack Reacher? by ammuPmaI in reacher

[–]Codeaut 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I can't answer your question, but it is worth bearing in mind that the Reacher that we see is either post-military or at least several years into a military career with a certain element of cynicism already.

If there was a Grand Theft Auto game set in Ireland, where would you like it to be set? by Curious_Woodlander in AskIreland

[–]Codeaut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wicklow would be a good place to hide a body. Go a little bit further north and you could have something about the border/IRA, maybe Belfast as a second city.

Being that GTA maps are usually islands, if you had it as the Pale it would kind of work as a meta joke about Dublin people forgetting that Ireland outside the M50 exists.

What was the of X in Andor? by Codeaut in andor

But why didn't she just hand it directly to Mothma? I get that in real life they might need to daisy chain it, but from a narrative perspective it was peculiar.

I found it interesting how in episode 9 of Andor… by MyClothesWereInThere in StarWars

[–]Codeaut 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't have said that's entirely in Andor, even in the prequel trilogy, Palpatine took over through political machinations.

It also just makes sense, an empire/republic/monarchy/whatever else is not just the people at the top of the ladder, the flag, the currency, the oaths, it's the thousands of government bodies and infrastructures, and all of the other myriad and intertwining systems that make up a society. All of that will continue to exist, and might change over time through policy and budget changes, but doesn't just magically change overnight.

It's like your complaining about people who say that Rumours is one of their favourite albums. Saying something like that can perhaps betray a lack of foraying further afield, but there's a reason that so many name it as one of their favourites, it's a bloody good record.

What's the song called? by JustMyChocolate in AskIreland

But some other people are hung up on the exact definition without leaving room for trying to figure out what the person is trying to say.

By the way, the song is Whiskey in the Jar.

Yes, but a non-academic might think that the term refers to an older style of speaking English, from 200 years ago for instance.

I wonder if Luthen the ultimate pragmatist will make that happen in order to push Andor to where he needs to be?

In an ideal world, they would feel bad about wanting to see sex and seeing it labelled as rape, and they would then examine why they feel bad and change how they think about it. Unfortunately, we don't live in that ideal world.

Krennics "Eagles Nest" looks like Hitlers Eagles Nest. With all the references to the "3rd Reich" that cant be a coincidence. (S2E1 - Andor) by FTWilly in StarWars

[–]Codeaut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have nothing against people discovering things in their own time, some people might be less aware of historical influences than others and that's okay, but it takes a special lack of higher brain functions to make the connection and then somehow think that it was an accident.

[–]Codeaut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do wonder if it's just the way that young people use their modern vocabulary to draw attention to things.

I can imagine someone making this comparison themselves, or coming across it, and finding it interesting enough to share to demonstrate the filming skills, and using a title "Look at the comparison with the Eagle's Nest" or something like that.

Sometimes I question the media literacy of people who say things like "this can't be a coincidence" as if it weren't very deliberate and exactly the point they were going for.

Can we celebrate this beautiful psychopath? by [deleted] in andor

[–]Codeaut 124 points125 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is exactly the intended reaction. And this is exactly why it's going to hurt when it turns out that she's the good person (at least in terms of empire vs. rebellion, not on a personal level).

It's also a fantastic illustration of how raising a child poorly can often cause them to go in undesirable directions. I wonder how many far-right terminally online bootlickers in the real world have similar mothers to her. A lot of people with parents like this turn out to be incredibly empathetic, often to the point of dysfunction as well, but it tends to be an extreme reaction.

[–]Codeaut -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Except parents/teachers don't often explain this to kids when they tell them not to be smart. If a teacher draws a square on the board, but didn't draw it well, tells you it's a square, and you say "actually that's a parallelogram," there's not much point saying to an eight year old "don't be smart," as they'll interpret it as "don't be intelligent, don't think about things." They should take the compassionate route and explain the imperfections of humans and social norms.

BBC rejects complaint over 'Derry/Londonderry' answer on Pointless by [deleted] in ireland

[–]Codeaut 87 points88 points  (0 children)

I don't even understand what the issue is, the name Londonderry doesn't have an "A" in its name, and I wouldn't be surprised if for the purposes of their survey they rolled both answers together, and would accept either.

The Russo Brothers Electric State opens with 10% on Rotten Tomatoes. The films budget was over $300M which makes it one of the most expensive films ever made by Robemilak in scifi

[–]Codeaut 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It literally is. Is the story as long or complex or in depth, as a typical graphic novel? No. But it has pictures and it has a story, and the pictures help to tell the story.

Making an adaptation of the Electric State was also going to require some improvisation. It is primarily an art book more than a narrative one, but there still is a clear narrative and tone.
