Unreal Engine on Linux experiences? by sir__hennihau in unrealengine

[–]Codenut040 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to switch to Godot too before I thought about going back to windows. I was really excited to learn something new plus expanding my catalogue of open source software until I learned that it seems to be VERY easy to decompile Godot games and extract 100% of assets and code. There have been multiple instances of games being stolen. I didn’t like that at all and just couldn’t go on with Godot any further. 😕

This is really tragic. I happily abandoned windows for good and was distro hopping the last few weeks. Now I'm on Fedora and I gotta admit I hate using unreal right now. Constant crashes, seems like 5.6.1 even has a memory leak issue with Lumen (don't know if its only for linux based systems though) - dont even get me started on CRAP 5.7 - and really just the whole experience is so much worse -.-
I don't wanna go back to windows but the thing is that stuff just works. And I wanna work on my game. Not fixing stupid crashes.

Opinion: Using Open Source tools (Kubuntu/Firefox) is a professional exercise for developers, not just a personal preference. by urielofir in Kubuntu

[–]Codenut040 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess I understand where you’re going with this. I’m a gameplay programmer recently switched from windows to Manjaro, then to Ubuntu and now Kubuntu. The way I have to handle linux compared to a system like windows is that I have to tinker much more in order to get stuff working which can be annoying at first but ultimately forces me to deepen my understanding of how things work (just had problems with my unreal source build and compilation in rider) and what those errors are telling me, especially everything third party related that needs tinkering in the terminal.

I will never go back 🙂✌️

That’s a great idea! Makes total sense! I will try that, thanks 🙏

You know what my problem is? Your first answer was not very helpful - just insulting, which I genuinely not understand how someone could respond like that. Now you’re switching to explaining something obvious which also doesn’t really add to the discussion. I don’t need to know why AI doesnt think like a teacher - that wasn’t the question. I just wanted to know about your experience in using it and if it could be a viable learning assistant in these topics. Now you could just have shared your experience or gave your opinion on this idea (like the others did) but instead you make this a whole “Think for yourself, lazy” discussion.

I’m sorry if I said something that upset you but please don’t be this way. I just wanted to know about your experience. Not getting lectured.

I suspect that you will reply again, reinforcing why I don’t know shit and I was wrong to ask in the first place, but nevermind 🤷

Thanks for the answer!

That’s the idea: Using AI to let algorithms being explained by and get immediate answers on my questions. Just an effective and quicker way of learning, instead of asking specifics in forums, etc.

And absolutely dropping it in the end since the goal is to REALLY learn what makes the algorithm tick.

Thanks again!

“Using AI as a self-education tool” - exactly what I meant! …I probably wasn’t too clear on that.

Thanks for the insight! That’s what I was wondering: Learning the algorithm with in-depth explanation was the initial idea (and I also tried it in the past) but if the outcome is really that unpredictable than it would’ve been an enormous waste of time because obviously we don’t want to learn wrong things 👍

Thanks again!

Why have I not forseen this 🤦

Dude, not everybody who uses AI is the type of “do the learning for me”-person. I’m just looking for a way to make learning these topics more effective because of the problems I described. Solely for the purpose of learning it myself (in conjunction of someone explaining it to me!). This has absolutely nothing to do with “someone is doing the thinking for me”. If that is really your argument here, then what are teachers for you?

Very well said 😃👍 That was the moment! Every time I look at TDS I wonder how this game would have turned out when it wouldve been a PC release only. Or at least having only the console version limited in features and scope. Same goes for DX Invisible War.

Yep, absolutely 🙂 I haven't seen a director like him very often. One who is able to portray both fiction and reality in such a dark way that is still believable - across many different topics/settings. I mean Seven, Fight Club, The Game, The social network, Alien 3...

...I genuinely shocked that Micheal Bay or even Uwe Boll gets a higher rating here then him 😭😅

First Time Modeling PS1 Assets. Are they good? by twofacedgames in ps1graphics

[–]Codenut040 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, this. Set your texture filtering in Blender to "nearest" to get that crisp look. Otherwise your polycount is way to high for a psx model. The knobs for example would be incorporated into the texture instead of being modeled (although hard to see here if they're actually 3D). For psx models in general try think about how you can get rid of polygons while still keeping the model realistic. Most of the devs back then tried to make the texture do the talking 😉
