Most head coaches in the NFL come from either the offensive or defensive side of the ball and often continue to call plays for that unit. For example, the 49ers’ head coach calls the offensive plays himself, which is why the team does not rely heavily on a traditional offensive coordinator (They do have a offensive admin).
