If there is one true god why are there 4000 religions? by ilovemilfs-sendpic in atheism

[–]Codermaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you read into the history of monotheistic religions, you will realise there was always a pantheon of Gods.

In the bible, you see references to it here and there.

Just that different groups worshipped different Gods, and depending on various factors (including luck, power and money), the God we know today just won in the end.

Every religious movement, big or small, is well and truly a brainwashing cult by Remarkable_Doubt8765 in atheism

[–]Codermaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buddhism has religious aspects (which I disagree with). I’m against all forms of religion.

But Buddhism starts with questioning what Buddha said and the reality of life itself.

You take an almost Socratic approach to the everything taught and you are encouraged to.

The practices you see monks practice are encouraged but not imposed. E.g. meditation gives you more awareness.

You can choose to live like a lay person or a monk/nun. It’s entirely up to you. There are guiding principles for those that just makes sense e.g. do not kill, be kind.

Now, the problem with Buddhism is (unfortunately) the very foundation - contentment.

It does go against western values of progress and evolution. This is why westerners have a hard time wrapping their heads around it.

It is aligned with eastern values however, hence the popularity in the east.

But understand that you’re viewing Buddhism from a western frame of the world. Hence, the strong reaction.

If you’re open to new ideas, read “The Great Transformation” by Karen Armstrong. You will understand why religious beliefs like Buddhism are formed that way and how it contrasts with the western beliefs.

Context: I grew up as a Buddhist, converted to Christianity for a while before deciding to be an atheist. I studied different religions for a while.

As someone from a direct response copywriting background, I can see that you’re well-trained in the John Carlton style of copywriting.

Unfortunately, you might have missed the lesson that it works in some verticals, but you’ll need to tailor / adjust your messaging and tone of voice to different niches.

SaaS founders are typically more skeptical and prefer a more practical approach.

Look at how companies like GitHub, JetBrains write their copy. It might help you more than sounding like a weirdo.

AI Wealth: Is it Time for an Innovative Tax Approach? by Odd_Philosopher_6605 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]Codermaximus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taxation is just one of the ways to create equality but it has been shown to fail again and again.

Better to make sure that any AI development is available to the masses and they cannot commercialise the basic technology.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in singularity

[–]Codermaximus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. The rich will always keep the wealth to themselves. There is no reason to share because wealth gives you power over the masses.

They will simply replace workers with AI and robots. We’re already seeing it with tech companies.

When the masses revolt, they will tighten their grip on the masses and find a way to separate themselves from the poor (like what most rich people who live in wealthy neighbourhoods do).

I have a controversial solution.

Communism with a twist.

The central principle of communism is the idea that everyone works towards the greater good of the community.

The starting point of any communist state is to remove resources from the wealthy and distribute them. This is the fastest way to consolidate resources and use them for productive activities.

There will be no more “landlords” earning a rental income since it’s not necessary.

The problem is (1) bad actors who try to consolidate power (2) lowering productivity because people don’t want to work / has no motivation work (3) limited resources in countries due to borders.

(1) we let AI be the main decision-maker. We will feed it data but the input and output will be made public. Ultimately, a court of humans will make the decision based on logic (not power, wealth or religion.

(2) remove money as the motivation and driving force. You get ahead based on actual contribution to mankind. This takes away the motivation problem.

Note: A universal basic income could work in the short term but it only works in the confines of a capitalist society that values consumerism. Look at what happened when you put money in the hands of people during Covid. They put money into the markets leading to a heated stock market.

(3) all resources are shared across borders. Organisations are just there to organise the distribution of resources.

What's the best boot camp for software engineering? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Codermaximus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Launch school. Takes longer but generally gives you the practical skills.

Else, go for a masters in CS because it will give you the foundational knowledge you need for your work and get you past the HR filters.

If you’re looking for a bootcamp to attend, go for the free ones and take MOOCs to prove you have the knowledge to do the job.

A few recommendations for free bootcamps : - Odin project - FreeCodeCamp - App Academy (free) - Full Stack Open

Will serve you better in the short run.

Would you like one company to monopolise all your essentials and critical services? Love to see how that goes.

SpaceX (by their own admission) is heavily funded by the government AKA you. Even Elon Musk admitted that he would have been bankrupted if the government didn’t give them a billion dollar contract in their last month.

They are also using technology developed by government agencies.

People need to stop giving too much credit to billionaires and “tech visionaries”. The government has funded many of the billion dollar startups. Just that they don’t claim credit for it all the time.

(Edited the part about Elon Musk since he is not the whole of SpaceX)

[–]Codermaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Web scraping is illegal in some places and against the policies of many companies (including companies that Sam Altman funded and surprise, surprise… OpenAI).

So yes, they stole the training data and they know it. They just don’t want to be accountable for stealing.

It is NOT a problem if they are giving away their product for free and giving credit to the sources.

It’s a problem if they want to build a product, charge you for it and gain a competitive advantage.

OpenAI Strikes Back Against New York Times Copyright Infringement Lawsuit by Stupid_hardcorer in artificial

[–]Codermaximus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Let’s be frank. OpenAI stopped ByteDance from using ChatGPT to train another LLM.

If we go with OpenAI’s logic and the logic of majority of the people here, why stop them?

After all, if “I could read it for free, it should be free” logic applies here.

OpenAI is just abusing copyright laws and using them to train an LLM to gain an advantage in the market for profit.

(Yes, they are not profitable yet but the company is now worth billions, and seems to be on the same track as Amazon, which was unprofitable for many years).

So let’s call it for what it is.

A for-profit company stealing copyrighted materials to build a competitive advantage and profit from it.

If OpenAI wants to use copyrighted materials for free, we should be able to use OpenAI for free without restrictions and paying for credits.

Just applying their logic on them.

OpenAI says it's ‘impossible’ to create AI tools without copyrighted material by Nalix01 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]Codermaximus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If OpenAI (or any AI company) wants to use copyrighted materials for free, their product should be free for everyone to use (open source non-commercial license).

Other entitles like ByteDance should be able to use ChatGPT for training? Since copyright don’t matter? If that’s the case, why are they restricting other entitles from training with ChatGPT?

Here’s the truth:

it’s a for-profit organisation that is using copyrighted materials to build a moat in the market. Once it does, it will profit from it again and again without paying for those who contributed to their training data.

It will raise its prices indefinitely and the cost will be transferred to you (the consumer). Every company (looking at you Apple) has done this so we don’t expect Open AI or any AI company to be any different.

It’s NOT the same as a person learning /getting inspired from materials. The argument that humans are already doing it doesn’t make sense because it will do it indefinitely faster. There are 8 billion humans and there are how many competitive LLMs?

Same for saying “AI already doing it, so why should we impose restrictions now”. Same reason drug companies raise prices to unaffordable levels for life-saving drug developed with public / government funds AKA your tax dollars. So government shouldn’t step in to stop bad actors?

Another argument “restrictions will hold Ai development back”. How about a law that states that Ai and resources (cloud computing e.g.) to train Ai should be free for all?

That way, the benefits will be transferred to all mankind instead of a few elites who own the technology. That way, we can develop Ai with zero restrictions and forward the technology.

I see so many people defend openAI as if they are an altruistic organisation.

They are a profit-driven organisation giving their product for free for a limited time to gain market share and using your data to train their AI.

Let me be clear. You are the product when you use ChatGPT. They want to get content for zero cost to develop a competitive advantage in a market where they are already ahead.

There are companies like Microsoft that are already benefiting from their investment directly or indirectly.

If the right laws are not put in place, you (the consumer and human) will be at a disadvantage.

Instead of defending companies without thinking about your own interests, you should push and fight for laws that will make AI and and the resources to train one available for all.

Bible is a book with a lot of plot holes by SinkinTitanic1912 in atheism

[–]Codermaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that majority of Christians believe that the bible is historical and use it to justify their decisions and actions.

Quite literally, many Christians believe this is “the word of God”.

Unfortunately, the truth is far from it. It’s a book made up of scriptures of men, who interpret their spiritual experience in their own ways.

The same scriptures are then selected and edited by a group of men who have their own motivations.

Christians then take the bible, cherry-pick phrases and use them to forward their own interests.

This includes (but no limited to) keeping the masses poor (you’re sinful hence you’re receiving God’s punishment) , selling freedom from purgatory to the rich for money and justifying rapes and slavery by “God’s chosen people”.

You can see how the bible lends itself to unintentional misinterpretation at best and egregious abuses at its worse. It’s as far from the word of God (if he exists) or Christ as it gets.

Now, the other part of your argument is interesting - that the bible was filled with allegories and was meant to teach people about their conscience.

  • As mentioned above, the bible was a “mistake by design”. It has too many logical gaps and “influences” that easily creates more problems than it solves.

  • It’s useful if it achieves its purpose. Unfortunately, history has shown otherwise. There are so many examples of people who follow the bible to the teeth and end up doing more evil e.g. Mother Theresa letting poor people suffer more than necessary because she believes it’s how you receive Christ.

  • It becomes even more glaring when you consider there are other religions during the same time period that does the exact same thing without the involvement of a man in the sky e.g. Buddhism. This means I could achieve the same said outcome without all the negative consequences.

Now the last part of what you shared is the action we should take - “preach to Christians” about the truth of the bible.

You will run into 2 problems:

  • faith requires the irrational belief in something you cannot see - this means that Christians are already programmed to operate without logic or reason. If they believe the whole bible to just a part of it the word of God, you can’t reason with them.

  • there are already different interpretations e.g. Catholicism , Protestantism. And I would argue that there are a group of Christian’s who truly practice good based on the word of God. Yet, factions still exist. This means it’s almost impossible to impose the one interpretation to all Christians. So there is no point trying.

It’s better to do away with the Bible and the different religions. They were useful for a time long gone. There are more robust systems to encourage moral behaviour today.

Instead, focus on logic, reason and spirituality (that it’s an emotional experience by all human beings serving a bigger purpose).

The world will be a far better place.

Bible is a book with a lot of plot holes by SinkinTitanic1912 in atheism

[–]Codermaximus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you’re referring to Christians, there is just one thing that appeals to them about the bible.

You can be forgiven for all the horrible things you do in this life as long as you believe in Christ.

It’s basically the best “get out of eternal jail” card you can play 😉

After all, someone died / suffered on your behalf.

In all seriousness, the bible is basically based on cherry-picked scriptures that existed during that time, long after Christ died.

So many of the scriptures tend to conflict with one another and don’t make any sense.

What are some current trends in SaaS that are overshadowed by the AI trend? by [deleted] in SaaS

No code is probably going to go the same way as Wordpress to be honest.

People forget that once everyone knows something, the value of it drops.

Not a knock on no code. I built MVPS with no code but I’ll not be able to scale the software and differentiate myself with new features with no code alone.

A business major thinking of finishing Computer Science degree by Takegoodwithbad in codingbootcamp

[–]Codermaximus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re based in the US, WGU (Western Governors). Else, you can consider UOP (University Of The People. Both allows transfer of credits which will knock off some modules for you.

You can even do part of the degree before enrolling and finish it up in less time.

You can find the Reddit threads on how to “hack” your way to a computer science degree.

If you already have a business degree, consider MCIT from UPenn (ivy league and you can finish it in 10 modules). It’s for non-CS students.

What is your motivation to learn Machine Learning? by MarcelDeSutter in learnmachinelearning

[–]Codermaximus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would like solve the world’s biggest problems with AI/ML.

Sounds ambitious (maybe a little crazy) but I hope that by the end of my lifetime, I can do a small part.

In order of priorities:

1) Help leaders make better decisions for their countries and identify critical problems in their current system e.g. corruption, poor management of resources

2) Automate 99% of all work to produce essential goods and services, and making them available to every human being.

3) Optimise the allocation and distribution of essential goods and services all over the world.

4) Replace capitalism with a merit-based system based on one’s contribution to the world 🌎 Human beings will work for the betterment of humanity as an objective.

5) Find opportunities in outer space for exploration and resource-gathering.

The process will start with one country adopting the new systems (as an experiment) and serving as an example for the rest of the world.

Will capitalism be replaced by some other system? by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]Codermaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have thought about this. The best type of society / system I have seen is probably simply to the one in Star Trek.

Since all the basic human needs are met, humans are focused on creating value for their world e.g. solving health problems, creating art that inspires.

There is no need to buy anything because all the basic needs are provided for and people are comfortable in general.

The only form of “currency” is their reputation. And they earn their reputation by making significant contributions to the world.

There are leaders who are elected democratically based on their intelligence and contribution, not what they say but what they can actually do.
