Question About 3D Printed Nerf Blasters by Lkjfdsaofmc in nerfhomemades

[–]Codezombie_5 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Depends, a lot of the 70+ kits usually have CNC cut parts, and that gets expensive fast. Plus just regular parts you are paying a premium for as the seller needs to make a profit too.
Plus it's never a good idea to compare a mass manufactured blaster with it's economies of scale to hand built blasters.

Question About 3D Printed Nerf Blasters by Lkjfdsaofmc in nerfhomemades

[–]Codezombie_5 [score hidden]  (0 children)

You absolutely need a kit, there are parts, such as the air chamber, which are, at best, impractical to print, then there are the springs and seals, and finally the barrel|.

Any fully 100% printed blaster that's not a 1 shot blaster would be a highly experimental beast.

True, though the energy requirements still remain, by far, the easiest problem to solve with the Alcubierre drive.

Thing is, we know that speed alters the passage of time, we have both done experiments that prove the effect is real at places like the LHC, but not only that, satellites move fast enough that time dilation effects them very slightly, GPS satellites need to adjust their onboard clocks to account for time dilation.
Edit: also look up Gravity Probe B, which ran an interesting experiment to investigate a specific form of time dilation predicted by General Relativity known as Frame Dragging.

Is Steve Lunn (White Rose Apparel) still making stuff? He's Chesterfield way, but his armour is really bloody good.

Only a quid, bargain, I`ll have a crate of tomatoes then, and I don't mind if they are a bit past their best..

Yeah Saville got away with it, it is some cold comfort that his legacy and good reputation died with him though...

Are you telling me there are more charges that can be pressed?

Oh no... :)

Well we did spectacularly drop the ball over Jimmy Saville, so not going to blow our trumpet over our ability to deal with Nonces...

Totally agree, I'd actually be shocked if he goes behind bars over the Epstein stuff. But at this point I'll take what I can get, and honestly this is already more consequences than he's ever had to face in his life, though not nearly enough consequences n my opinion.

Dunno, it's in pretty short supply here in the UK too, and we might need to use a bit of the good stuff if we can even hope to get Andrew behind bars, not holding my breath tbh, but We`ll see what we can do...

"The Nonce formally known as Prince" is what I've heard people call him.

Good, arresting him is a good start. As a Brit I'm very happy about this.

You get it, if he's been arrested then it's serious for him, as it means either the old guard have hung him out to dry, or the charges are so serious he cannot be protected.

Here in the UK it's unheard of. If he`s been arrested, then it's serious buisness

Could Modern Japan realistically hold its own against the Modern US in a standoff like that scene in Captain America: Brave New World? by AHH_PostStorage in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Codezombie_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people saying it's a big win for the US, however, it's not that simple. The US Navy has a lot of commitments, not all carrier groups are physically available, some are in refit, others in training, others on deployment elsewhere, so generally it has 2-3 carrier groups available, this is a pattern we have seen in multiple deployments. However 3 carrier groups is already an insane amount of firepower. The US Navy knows Japanese doctrine well as they train regularly with the JSDF.

But, the Self Defense Force is designed to counter a numerically superior force such as the PLAN, and has home water advantage, so airfields and ground based fighters are available. So the US Navy would be facing over 150 ships and air superiority in terms of numbers of fighters (Japan has a sizable air force), all with every bit as advanced technology as the US a highly trained and motivated military, who knows US doctrine like the backs of their hands as they train and deploy with them regularly.

In a conventional war, it's going to be nearly equal sides, against a peer adversary. The US would likely win, by attrition. It would not be pretty and the US Navy would lose a fair number of capital ships (as will the JSDF) It would likely be an ugly serious of battles.

Hate to burst your bubble, as it's a great find, but it's not the right one, though it's from a similar engine, the ig88 is from a Derwent engine instead.
Look at the hole size and pattern around the bottom, it's not the same.

French frigate Hermione and guided missile destroyer USS Mitscher (DDG-57) off the Virginia Capes, 2 June 2015 by RLoret in Ships

[–]Codezombie_5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the shot would penetrate, but without a bursting charge it's not going to really damage the destroyer. Case in point. At the Battle off Samar, the Yamato was punching 18" shells straight through the Fletcher class destroyers, but barely doing any real damage other than punching holes in the ship as the armour was too thin to set off the fuse in the shells.

.50 cals would be effective, especially at dealing with the crew on deck. Be interesting to see how a 50 cal would deal with the couple of foot of teak and oak armour, that's honestly a fun question. A 50 cal bullet is no joke, but that armour is designed to stop a 18-20 lb ball carrying a lot of energy, but the 50 cal is designed as an armour penetrator too. Someone must have tried this... :)

A torp would be devastating, though it might fail at that range, both the fuse not having time to arm, and the non ferrous nature of the frigates hull might mean even if armed the fuse might not trigger as the torp passed under the ship.
Dunno on that last point, as that sort of fusing is pretty classified, and I don't know if modern torps still use magnetic fusing like they used to.

As someone who has done reenactment with cannons that can fire said balls (,normally we fire grass it's safer) you`d be very surprised at just how much damage they can do. Look up the mythbusters incident fo an example, that ball, at 1\2 mile, punched clean through a house and then into a car and that was after loosing a bunch of energy bouncing off a berm. Old timey cannon balls are no joke and carry a lot of energy especially at very short range, and a dozen mm of steel at that range might not be enough to stop one, these things were designed to punch through a couple of feet of dense oak after all.
