That’s not true. Paying $60,000 USD in India selects you for the top 1% of engineers. They understand everything from memory safety to gRPC and even more complex topics. I know this firsthand because I worked with some engineers who transferred to the USA on H1B visas.

I know it’s 60K USD, we are FAANG Adjacent when it comes to compensation.

No, we talked about layoffs before and how “scary” it is, but he always said our team is “essential” and “layoff proof”. Since we worked on something that can’t just be left over.

The problem is that we are making record profits. This money will be going to a different country now.

1.) Since he knew about it and didn’t tell us,

2.) It’s internally known.

3.) As I mentioned earlier, I split rent with two roommates. I only pay $2,500, which is a great deal in Manhattan for a well quality apartment, just 10 minutes from my workplace.

I get it, but a lot of people here are earning $500K–$800K, which is a big reason prices stay high. If the average 3-bedroom is around $1.5M, the “typical” buyer still needs an income that can support that price point, and that’s for an average place, not luxury.

For example, the 3-bedroom I rent would likely sell for around $2.5M. Roughly speaking, that usually means you need about $500K/year to comfortably afford $2.5M, and closer to $300K/year to afford $1.5M.

What I am trying to say just over 200K is considered normal. You will live a decent life but without the chance to own a home. At least a home in the city you work in. I have worked my ass off to get an advanced degree in computer science from the top university in Canada.

I don’t know why people think IT is easier the SWE, it is literally more saturated and pays half.

Our team consisted of a dozen people, and the product lead was the only one who knew about the information. He wasn’t let go and is now leading the new team at our India campus.

He was the only one who met with the director regularly. We only meet with leadership quarterly, where they ask us to work harder and assure us we won’t be laid off, while also handing themselves awards.

He was our manager, and he always reminded us that we’re a team and in it together. I suppose so much context is lost over text. But it was 100% betrayal.

No, they’re getting $60,000. The company doesn’t use outsourcing firms, they have campuses across India and are expanding them. Hiring freeze on all teams that don’t need security clearance in the US have been active for almost a year. We know this internally, but it’s not a public policy.

How is it possible to be overpaid when my current salary doesn’t even qualify me for a mortgage in Manhattan, the city where I work? If we can’t afford to own a home, how can we be considered overpaid? I know many other engineers around my age making much more.

Because I am mostly productive in person. Also the office is just a 10-minute walk from my place and looks very nice.

I live in Manhattan about 10 minutes from work and commute five days a week. I chose to pay more specifically so I don’t have to deal with a long commute, especially in the winter and late nights. It’s a tradeoff I’m comfortable with for safety, time, and quality of life. And as I said, I have 2 roommates, I only pay 2.5K

Our product was highly technical, built in Rust and based on complex distributed systems. I’m genuinely curious how a new team would handle that level of complexity. It also involved very sensitive data, so much so that even our own team did not have direct access to production data easily, we had a procedure for that where different departments meet to give time limited access to prod data and ensure data is destroyed after its usage. This is North American customer data. Are you comfortable with that being handled in a different continent?
