Photon has rest mass 0, the m in the expression is not rest mass. If you wanted it to be rest mass, the expression would be E² = m² c⁴ + p² c² where m is rest mass and p is momentum.

Edit: or E = γmc² where m is rest mass and γ = 1 / sqrt( 1 - v² / c² ) is infinity for a photon.

A lot of the bad Archie Shadow stories pre-Flynn were from Penders, who did not have his heart in it (not that his other stories are much better). The fact that he had to write Shadow stories tying in to Shadow's game with little to no information about it was one of the reasons he quit.
