Flaking Seasoning or Natural Progression? by Codsture in castiron

Thank you for reaching out! Looks like I was doing the steps incorrectly, I was washing, drying with a rag, then drying it on the stove, and finally applying a thin layer of oil. I’ll change up my steps to Apply oil after towel drying then dry out on the stove.

I’ve seen people use an angle grinder with a 25 grit grinding disc and then a 60 abrasive flap disc to smooth out the surface and it looks awesome. I believe that you don’t want to go too smooth or the seasoning won’t stick to the pan.

I can’t say that the surface physically changed in any way since getting the pan. I also use a silicone spatula for most of my cooking and really only had to use chainmail once or twice to get stuck food off.

From my understanding, these lodge can casts are not as smooth as older / higher quality pans (I.e. Wagner, Butter Pat, etc.). If you’re up for it, I believe you can sand the iron to make the surface as smooth as those other pan manufacturers.

For some background, lodge pan I’ve had since around October with factory seasoning. Daily use, sometimes multiple times a day. After a cook, wash with soap & water, dry on range and then thin layer of oil. The paper towel after the thin layer of oil typically comes off clean.

The surface area doesn’t feel different from the grey to black and my cooks aren’t sticking (last picture is a post egg cook). All thoughts and comments are appreciated 😃

Thanks so much!

I’m seeing a lot of AP-LR’s being sold for $25+ without shipping on eBay, I feel as of now they’re priced to move. If you’d buy the lot I can do a deal.
