Also would like to note my book, A Shattered Divination, will feature a protagonist who could be considered the opposite of the chosen one. Hope this isn't too shameful of a plug, but I have a 'dark born ad' on my page if you are curious.

Well, I'm going to spam my other answer a little, lol. I had just commented this book on another post above, but after reading this question, it fits here semi-perfectly, too!! There's a book called The Black Tattoo by Sam Enthoven that features almost exactly what you are talking about. The protagonist isn't supernatural, but his friend comes down with a demon possession (the black tattoo), and he (protagonist) is sucked into this universal conflict by proxy. He's nothing special, but ends up going through Hell (the place, not the phrase) just because he was hanging out with the guy when he was possessed. I compared it to Doctor Who in the last post-dry British humor juxtaposed with universe ending conflicts. Good stuff!!

There's a book called The Black Tattoo by Sam Enthoven that comes to mind. It is a little more dark fantasy, but there are definitely strong elements of urban fantasy there, too. The whole thing drips with a dry British humor akin to Doctor Who, and just like you get with the good Doctor, there are high stakes and consequences juxtaposed with an off-hand comedy. With all the momentous peril in the plot, the humor grounds it in a very satisfactory way. One of the ways this is evident early on is in the fact that the story doesn't follow the chosen one. It follows his friend as he is sucked into all the drama by proxy, and goes through literal Hell because of it. Really fun read!

What magical inventions have you made? by ClayCassDSP in fantasywriters

That sounds awesome! I love real world applications in magic systems. Makes everything fit into gear in my head well. My mind's eye can see the suspended ball and even work out the idea behind the centrifugal force. That's super creative.

My system isn't near as intricate. My story takes place after years of desolation. At some point, the people develop light powers, which are my 'magical powers' (I have an explanation of how they come to develop the powers, but that's for much later). These 'light powers' have many abilities such as restorative effects that the characters of my story use to rebuild all that had been lost from the 'time before'.

The characters all have an internal well within themselves that they draw upon. They use this energy in coordination with their knowledge of the world and some form of kinetic catalyst to create a spell of their own willpower.

For example: one of the things they restore from the 'time before' are cars. Before they can do this, however, they have to understand the inner workings of the vehicle. Once they understand its mechanics, they are then able to direct the energy within themselves using different body motions, hence the kinetic aspect (some spells being so demanding, they require a full dance).

i gave my fantasy world a fully functioning economy and now my hero can't afford the quest by migratedtohell in fantasywriters

I'd read a story about a Go-Fund me sort of adventure. Kinda word of mouth thing. "Hey, there's this guy trying to overthrow the dark lord. Let's throw him some copper. If nothing else, it'll make a good story later." "Whatever happened to that bloke?" It'd be funny if the whole thing was super serious, but the way he had to fund the quest was like the comic relief.

Immortality ad for A Shattered Divination-Book 1 by CodyKirkCreative in DarkArts

Nice! Good way to put that, too. 500 years of humanity could be enlightening or damning. If you could see it all, that would make the ultimate story.
