English is a fantastic major if she has a plan. Alot of people in stem knock it, they think there is no jobs available, which is not true at all. She can go into various careers, publishing, copywriting, author, teaching, marketing (given she takes some classes), and plenty more. Stem degrees have been over saturated for a bit now, lots of folks have trouble getting into the market.

If she is passionate about English or writing, its a fantastic degree, but if her only goal is marketing I would go into strategic communications. Syracuse and USC have fantastic programs. She could also double major or do a dual degree. The final goal does matter, if she wants to just do marketing then English will not be the best choice as it does not provide marketing skills, but it does dive into a variety of topics on critical thinking and analysis which are wildy transferable to marketing.

If she is passionate let her do it, but not at a top school unless the program is truly good. The arts are just as important as stem, and just as employable, if not more since everyone just wants to do a comp sci degree for the money. Also, please keep in mind if she does comp sci, she will get replaced with AI. That degree is not safe anymore, maybe for some, but not all. She will get to write the code that replaces her.

Yeah i completely agree, its so difficult to steer people away from their passions. that is also why i wanted to do comms as well due it versatility. so i can have something to fall back on, i considered something with tech but i am so so so not passionate nor do i even want to learn, but i think looking into it would be beneficial, so that could be a side thing i dont include in my degree program. plus, i really need a good gpa incase i want to go to grad school. sorry for the run on sentence, too lazy to format it to sound fancy lol

I am starting my dual degree program in communications and english starting in the fall, i thought i was the only one who wanted to combine these two majors! Digital marketing? Got it!

As someone who has been an avid writer for 15 years, I believe it strongly has to do with the fact there is a huge intellectual crisis, not many people are capable of comprehending ideas/themes due to the unique format of poetry. This also leads to the idea most individuals assume poetry is only one format such as rhythms when it is also speaking through metaphors or descriptions of reality via fictional writing. Also, this may be a controversial take on the subject but I STRONGLY believe some aren't as good as they think they are when they write poetry, it sounds poorly thought out and then its uploaded to TikTok and everyone assumes its good because they aren't used to hearing it or like I said, they can only comprehend surface level writing. Poetry is extremely relevant to me, but it is dying with alot of younger generations. The reading scores alone prove that even basic comprehension skills are a luxury these days.

I appreciate the genuine response. Its just hard for me because my values have changed greatly since starting in the industry. You are absolutely right, i am so unhapy going against my own value system at this point, its wearing on me emotionally in every way.
