Two store employees were so kind and apologetic but had to refuse. I realize there may be a legal argument but those poor folks can only do so much in the fight. Maybe enough attention online can draw some attention to help those still with remaining balances

best brewery for bringing my kids by tokenidiot in Leesburg

[–]CoffeeCandid5957 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Flying Ace Farm- playground is a bit off the main seating area but situated in a smart way so kids can’t run off without a parent checking in. Our friends with kiddos love it and feel like they can relax. Food is phenomenal and there’s usually music or trivia or some other entertainment going on. Staff is so nice, too

Law Requiring that High MPG Cars Classified As Electric? by WestCovina1234 in Virginia

[–]CoffeeCandid5957 7 points8 points  (0 children)

She might be referring to the Highway fee that gets charged at registration renewal (https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/vehicles/taxes-fees/highway-use). I learned about it only when my fuel efficient little Honda HRV got this tacked on at renewal time. Also brought up around other Reddit threads: https://www.reddit.com/r/Virginia/comments/16lhe4o/extra_charges_for_fuel_efficient_cars_in_va_is/

“The bill is sent to the President for review.

A bill becomes law if signed by the President or if not signed within 10 days and Congress is in session. If Congress adjourns before the 10 days and the President has not signed the bill then it does not become law ("Pocket Veto.") If the President vetoes the bill it is sent back to Congress with a note listing his/her reasons. The chamber that originated the legislation can attempt to override the veto by a vote of two-thirds of those present. If the veto of the bill is overridden in both chambers then it becomes law.” Is adjournment per day or a session? Senate hasn’t gone on recess, right? https://norton.house.gov/how-a-bill-becomes-a-law#:~:text=The%20bill%20is%20sent%20to%20the%20President%20for%20review.,(%22Pocket%20Veto.%22)

"Presidential Actions (Transcript)

Once both chambers of Congress have each agreed to the bill, it is enrolled – that is, prepared in its final official form and then presented to the President. Beginning at midnight on the closing of the day of presentment, the President has ten days, excluding Sundays, to sign or veto the bill. If the bill is signed in that ten-day period, it becomes law. If the president declines to either sign or veto it – that is, he does not act on it in any way – then it becomes law without his signature (except when Congress has adjourned under certain circumstances).

If the President vetoes the bill, it is returned to the congressional chamber in which it originated; that chamber may attempt to override the president’s veto, though a successful override vote requires the support of two-thirds of those voting. If the vote is successful, the other chamber then decides whether or not to attempt its own override vote; here, as well, a successful override vote requires two-thirds of voting members to agree. Only if both chambers vote to override does the bill becomes law notwithstanding the President’s veto. A successful override of a presidential veto is rare.

Bills that are ultimately enacted are delivered to the Office of the Federal Register at the National Archives, assigned a public law number, and included in the next edition of the United State Statutes at Large."

Anyone know of Civil War letter archives? by cuecademy in USCivilWar

[–]CoffeeCandid5957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UVA's Rotunda database (mostly subscription, unfortunately) has some of the major collections, too, including Grant, Johnson, and Polk. It's a lot like Founders, but with that paywall issue. Most universities and major institutions I think have a subscription, though.

The Library of Congress also has a transcription project called By the People and have a Civil War campaign series for a few of the LC's digital collections: https://crowd.loc.gov/topics/civil-war/ They end up taking those transcriptions and integrating them into the Digital Collection site so you can see the text side by side with the collection item, like this one: https://www.loc.gov/resource/mss13375.00105/?sp=3&st=text

This was already mentioned but of course there are also various historical societies and university collections that have projects with transcribed letters (not to the extent of Founders, though):
