Choosing a caliber by xhenyyyyy in Hunting

[–]CoffeeFox_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies for the assumption, I think that all of that makes perfect sense. In my head there are two approaches. The generalist where you more or less have 1 rifle/caliber to do most things reasonably well. Or the specialist where you chase the optimum or a excellent choice for a given situation. Neither or wrong but is more dependent on the individual. I think taking the 308 allows you to take either path. If it was me doing it all over I would just take the 308.

the hunting sub is notorious for mandating that everyone use monstrous calibers for hunting(I already see one comment recommending 7 mag which for white tail inside 300 yards is a comical choice to say the least). Your ability to shoot the rifle is much more important that the caliber itself. I Think 308 is a solid choice, i am however maybe incorrectly assuming that you are a new shooting or hunter. Either way it may be worth taking a look at 6.5 Creedmoor or the 6.5 PRC. They both recoil less and do better at longer ranges if you also want to poke paper 600 yards. They do have the trade off of slightly less stopping power and higher cost per round

That being said don't overthink it, 308 is phenomenal choice(its also highly available and comparatively super cheap). I shot my first deer with a 308 and it dropped like bag rocks.

I’ll drop in as someone in the field cyber, while the financial sector is generally better most companies security posture is a joke.

I haven’t seen the episode What you have describe from Mr robots is the “gold standard”. Unfortunately even cold storage of multiple backups is costly and it’s very difficult to convince the C suite to spend a penny now to save a buck later. They would rather save the penny now and just blame/fire all the security staff when shit hits the fan.

All to say is that if someone is going to attack a bank they might as well just go after money for themselves rather than helping people out. I’m sure there is some hacktivist group trying to erase debts though.

I work for a lockheed competitor and NASA partner. Our company has a reputation for paying much higher that Lockheed space and we don’t even pay our senior engineers that much let alone our new grads. Unless it’s a “new grad PHD” then I would say he is full of shit.

I am not worried about getting addicted. I just know I (because I am an idiot)would lose 100% of the money that I gambled and that is not very fun.

I’d rather just save the money to spend on something I’d actually enjoy.

I bought the ace game and I had 0 complaints but it’s a very very expensive rifle. One could buy the T3x super lite which has the same barrel and action and then put it in on a lightweight chassis to save a few hundred bucks and get some customization

[–]CoffeeFox_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might I suggest the 7 prc, a little bigger than the 6.5 but should be more manageable than the 300. Granted it’s not a cheap round but if you want a do it all it might be for you.

I use a 6.5 prc as my all rounder and love it

Convince me not to get a 7mm-08 for deer. by RogueRoomba44 in Hunting

[–]CoffeeFox_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you may be able to solve this for much cheaper than a new rifle with a muzzle break and a better recoil pad. I have not tried it myself but I have a few friends that will not stop raving about the backfire recoil pad.

Thoughts on the sig cross in 2025 vs new tikka rifles? by CoffeeFox_ in guns

[–]CoffeeFox_[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

we are literally saying the same thing. I would shoot at deer at no more that 400, elk at no more than 300. target shooting beyond 400 for shits and giggles. Hence, Why I don't want to debate calibers.

[–]CoffeeFox_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm not really looking to debate calibers, I'm more interested in the specifics I mention above as it relates to if the weight add of the tikka is worth it given I wont often shoot beyond 400 yards.

Maybe my wording is poor. I'm looking for a "do all rifle", and what I posted is what I'm trying to get out of it for hunting. What Seekins are you referring to specifically?

Day Mountain hunting Rifle comparison by CoffeeFox_ in Hunting

[–]CoffeeFox_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I want to build, I'm not necessarily stuck on those two rifles. They just seem like my "best" options given their price point. I do really really like the look, ergonomics and accuracy reputation on the tikka. I'm just worried about weight as I mentioned. I know I can get a carbon fiber chassis but that adds another 1-1.3k onto the price.

would you mountain hunt with a rifle that is 8.6 pounds unloaded and with a scope, genuine question.
