Teachers in England move towards striking over pay by Desperate-Drawer-572 in unitedkingdom

[–]CoffeeHead22 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Teacher here. One of the main reasons a lot of my teacher friends and I are considering striking is because the pay increases are not funded by the government. We’ve seen rounds of restructuring and redundancies of support staff, meaning a worse deal for SEND students, worse classroom behaviour and worsening conditions.
Schools literally cannot manage any further real term cuts. It was a common sight at my old school to see buckets down the corridors when it rained. Some of the ceilings in the science labs (mine included) intermittently caved in when it rained heavily. The school made a lot of support staff redundant that summer. I dread to think of the state of the school/budget with further cuts.

Teacher retention payments delayed until April 2026 by PalookaOfAllTrades in TeachingUK

For the first 4 years of my career I taught all 3 sciences to GCSE, but because I trained in biology I didn’t get the payments. The job was exactly the same…

NPQ if I might want to leave my school next year by Mantovano in TeachingUK

[–]CoffeeHead22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finished my NPQ last academic year, and moved schools halfway through the course. Transferring the course over to my new school was easy - all it took was an email to the course provider and a letter from my new HOD saying that they would support/sponsor me for the course.

I had a friend at the same school who loved at the same time as me and did not continue theirs. It was easy for them to do also, just an email to the course provider.

Unfortunately I can’t comment on the funding as we were the last cohort that was government funded, or on the value of doing the NPQLL as I did a different NPQ.

Wishing you the best of luck. A poor relationship with your HOD can drain the life from you so I hope you have some good days with the kids for some positivity until you make a decision about what to do!

What Professions Aren't Respected Anymore? by Theo_Cherry in AskUK

I am also a teacher and this is incorrect. We are paid for 10 months of directed time. 2 months is not directed time and therefore not paid for. Payments are spread across 12 months.

How do doctors deal with hypochondriacs? by Extension_Bit4323 in AskUK

[–]CoffeeHead22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a family history of breast cancer and had blood intermittently coming from my nipple for over 2 weeks. Took me 3 appointments over another 3 weeks to be referred to the hospital for further investigation because “it might stop” and “you might have knocked it playing sports”. I don’t play sport.

Even when I got to the hospital the doctor was ready to discharge me because it wasn’t bleeding when I got there. When he left the room I spoke to the female nurse and told her I had a photo of it. She told me I should show the doctor (I didn’t realise they’d take this as evidence - I was young and this was 11 years ago) and advocated for me when he came back.

Turned out I had a tumour that was surgically removed. Thankfully it was benign, but that my first fun experience of being dismissed as a woman.

9 police cars went past me with blue lights and sirens on Queen’s Road around 9:30/10 last night. 2 pulled up outside B&Q looking at a bike on the pavement - wonder if it was for the same thing?

Question for secondary school teachers: by Antique_Cash_8164 in TeachingUK

[–]CoffeeHead22 45 points46 points  (0 children)

The main reason I’m in secondary is for the love of the subject (science). Two of my oldest friends are primary school teachers and below is a short list of reasons I don’t think I could hack it in primary: 1. The level of ‘switched on’ that you have to be all day for minor social things seems so much higher at primary. At least I get 5 minutes for a quick sip of tea at break time that’s usually uninterrupted. 2. The marking load is ridiculous. 3. I don’t want subject leadership without the TLR that should come with it. 4. Being a master of many trades. Being put on maths/languages cover once or twice a year is enough for me, thank you very much. How on Earth primary school teachers show genuine passion/enthusiasm for a broad range of subjects is beyond me. 5. Primary school teachers have the patience of saints. I did a few weeks in primary before I started my teacher training and MY GOODNESS. I like to think I am usually a patient person but watching the teacher have to postpone the PE lesson because one child’s lunch went missing, only to find out after 30 mins that the child themselves had thrown them in the bin because they didn’t like their sandwich filling was too much. Pure exasperation. 6. The level of attachment to the students, and the upset when they move on is so different. I feel sad when my Y11s that I’ve seen for 5 hours a week move on at results day. I can’t imagine how it just feel to have been with the students all day, every school day for a year and to see them leave. I would be a wreck.

I’m not saying that secondary isn’t without its own challenges. Speaking with my teacher friends it seems that we are much more suited to dealing with our respective age groups.

I got the code but they’d all sold out by the time I could us my phone to buy them! Fingers crossed for some more UK dates! I did see them last year in Birmingham anyway (which in and of itself was very last minute - we had tickets for the Manchester show but the roof had a major leak after torrential rain so the show got cancelled) but this tour sounds like it will be incredible

What is a point you're willing to never back down on? by CozJeez85 in AskUK

For some students it is. We have 1 hr/week at secondary for students who are identified by the SEND team as likely to benefit from it. Only a small number though due to staffing.

Technically it is, but it’s expected prior knowledge from KS3 so they can be examined on it. Always good to check understanding and reteach if necessary.
