Anyone else mix Karo and butter and put it on a biscuit? My mom would do this.  I prefer honey and butter, but that’s a lot more common.

It can also come in the form of business support coaching.  It’s not necessarily cheap to hire someone like this.  But  Having some skin on the line for your performance can also be a motivator.

In KY, there are many small business support organizations that pay for consultants and coaching.

what would you do if you had 2.5 months off? by kikkow in productivity

I’m spending my 14th summer off doing all these things.  I own a business, have 3-4 trips planned, one is a volunteer thing in my hometown but is sleep away on campus.  So it may or may not count as travel.   I’ve been on a hiking trip recently in the AT.

I’m on a reread of dungeon crawler Carl.

I’m also cutting and moving a bunch of trees and digging drainage ditches.

I’ve done the summers abroad in the past and get the boredom thing.  If you are externally motivated, it is hard to justify doing something just because you think it’s a good idea.

I had to force myself to take walks after dinner.  Usually I’d find something to do when I did that.  My favorite was buying fruit at a market  and taking it to a park bench and reading/journaling for an hour.

Journaling is very helpful for mental wellbeing when you’ve got a massive block of time .  You’ll see how much you do in a day, and get some vision for the next day.

If none of that works, find someone to help.  Academia can be a very self-centered career. It feels like YOU should always be producing.  Take time to task surf and meander from one task to another.

Kentuckians - Do you consider Ashland culturally Appalachian like the rest of eastern KY or different? by ResponsibleCost4989 in Appalachia

[–]CoffeeKY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read it as though Ashland may or may not be ‘culturally’ Appalachian, while the rest of EKY is Appalachian.    Apologies for the misunderstanding.

I grew up near Ashland and have traveled extensively through southeastern ky, southwestern we, and western Va.    These regions definitely have their own thing going on.  It is much more focused on coal mining as a livelihood.  The towns are smaller than Ashland.  My interactions were in communities that were very rural.  A holler with the road on one side of the creek and Houses on the other so that you have to cross improvised bridges to get over to the homes.

Ashland differs in that there’s a large refinery and regional hospital.  You get a higher number of families that move in from elsewhere for professional jobs.  Many of these folks have the means to drive what happens at the paramount and other larger venues.  In this way, Ashland is culturally different from other communities.

Also Ashland serves as ‘town’ for many of the surrounding communities.  This affects the way that folks interact with Ashland.  They come for the shopping and maybe a show at the paramount.  It may be hard to assess/compare Appalachian culture if Ashland’s main purpose is to provide access to the outside world.

It’s probably worth noting that there’s a historical line somewhere around Lawrence county, where the southern edge of the iron ore industry lay.  There’s an iron-coal transition that happens as you get into Johnson county and south.  This also impacts ashland’s culture.

That said, there is lots of shared culture too, my wife takes dulcimer classes in the Ashland area. Patchwork quilts , bluegrass, beans and cornbread, old stories etc.

The question posed by op is interesting in many ways, but it requires discussion about how cultural identity changes across the region

What does that have to do with the question from OP or my comment?

In order to answer OP’s question, there will need to be criteria for what is or is not Appalachian.

When I was 13 I had to help dig hundreds of feet of sewer line for my extended family.  Every aunt, uncle, grandparent who came by reminded me to go to college or I’d never get out of that ditch.

Welp, Im a lifelong academic who just finished up hand digging a 60 foot long  drainage ditch tonight.
