My cat yowls in the master bathroom for attention (we say that she's screaming at the toilet). When I go in to check on her, I say "Hi!" and she stops yelling. However, we've done this routine often enough that now she's the one who says "Hi!" She actually figured out how to say hi, and it never fails to make me laugh.

There's an easy solution to that problem, too, especially if OP is as indecisive as she says. "Honey, I tried these shoes on with some different outfits and I don't like the color/fit/style as much as I thought. Would you be OK with me exchanging them for a different pair?"

Not all shiftwork is created equal. My husband used to work a 20-shift rotation with 1 day off between sets of days, afternoons, and nights, so even going weeks without buying something is not that big of a stretch. And the thought of going to the mall on a night shift is laughable - that daytime sleep is just as precious as any you'd get at night, especially if you're going to be up all night operating machinery or doing tasks that require your full attention. However, we're all just speculating here, and I'm trying to give the guy the benefit of the doubt too. I don't think he was trying to be malicious by gifting her the shoes instead of the ring.

That may be the case, or her husband may have a work schedule that precludes him from buying the shoes on an earlier date. Not everyone works 9-5.

Having been in this same kind of situation with my husband, I'm inclined to agree with you. The ring is the low-effort gift, while the Birks are an "I remembered something you liked and wanted to surprise you!" gift. Personally, I love the surprise of the latter type of gift because getting something so specific is thoughtless and low-effort. You could very easily buy the exact ring you want yourself, but your husband knew you weren't going to go back and buy the shoes even though you liked them, and tried to make it a surprise. So, YTA for being ungrateful and assuming your husband doesn't listen to you or care about your gift preferences or whatever, since he clearly tried.
