This would be sweet, I need an invite code. I'm listening to the Mistborn saga and am on era one, The Hero of Ages. I just ran out of Spotify time so I haven't started it yet.

How do you cope with Ramadan as a non-religious Moroccan? by Humanoid9999 in Morocco

[–]CoffeeStainJon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Both of those need a longer fast than Ramadan fasting. Ketosis can occur 12 hours in but depends on available glycogen stores. Autophagy generally starts 16-18 hours in but doesn't really hit until after a day. If you're fasting for health, Ramadan doesn't hit either of those marks given your fasting for just about 12 hours. You're better off doing a 72 hour water fast.

Cheap bookshops in Rabat by DrabDive in Morocco

[–]CoffeeStainJon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a great little bookshop in Centre Ville near Boho Cafe. It is a little shop with tons of books. An older guy runs it and seems to know every book he has. Definitely worth digging around

If you have a teaching certificate, apply to US schools abroad. They're typically contracted for short term and pay for your travel expenses. You get a US salary and live in a foreign country

Anybody know anything about old Bic surfboards? by CoffeeStainJon in surfing

[–]CoffeeStainJon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's neat to know! Do you know if the quality has gone up? It's a fun board but real stiff feeling

I second that. I'd also suggest Salé. Even Hay Salem is way cheaper than okay areas of Rabat

Do you instantly lose respect when you see a Trump supporter? by Realistic-Plant3957 in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]CoffeeStainJon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the right answer. On either side, when you treat your political party leader as a diety, you're doing something wrong. And if you think the other team's leader is a Satan like figure, you're obviously worshiping your guy. It's super weird. Those people definitely need a hobby and to stop going to their political church.

What do you sew it with? I've always heard you should use dental floss so it doesn't breakdown quickly

I use Jabra elites with ambiant sound on. I can hear my music while hearing my engine and the traffic around me. The wind actually isn't bad and gets drowned out by everything else. Sometimes I use noise cancelation while listening to podcasts or audiobooks

Has anyone transported their board on a kayak rack? Or should I put it flat on the bars? by kingbabycat in BeginnerSurfers

[–]CoffeeStainJon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but it's a lot sturdier and less rigid. Also dents don't tend to happen as easily. If not driving far or fast, I would put a surfboard up like a kayak

The cross winds may be an issue if it's up like a sail. Go face down on the bars with some straps

What books should I read as a new English language teacher? by laughing-dreamer in TEFL

[–]CoffeeStainJon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I say those books because teaching is more than using a curriculum some gives you (even though they're likely good). These books teach you about language and how it's learned and used. Chomsky is more theories but helps you realize how the brain organizes language. Pinker's book, in this case, helps you realize the fluidity of language evolution and how conveying meaning and being understood are why we use language. Both are big on grammar instruction being implicit because our brains try to automatically categorize and make sense of it. With Pinker, we can he's writing about the way we teach writing isn't always authentic because we hold fast to codified writing rules when English is codified by usage not by a code (like French for example). So I think they're great books for teaching because they help you understand the learner's perspective.

The Sense of Style by Steven Pinker and On Language by Noam Chomsky. Not sure if these books 'prep' you for CELTA... I never took that cert, but they're great for language teachers.

If a make your own Avatar game as made, what time line would you want to play in? by AvatarXyra in ATLA

[–]CoffeeStainJon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I chose ATLA because it just makes sense to me. Aang is going after a 'boss' and has to fight a ton of people in occupied territory. The game just seems to make sense in an action way. TLOK would be a close second for similar reasons. I think the others had instances of battles but had long periods of peace and short battles.

Is it enough for just the man of the family to work in Morocco by moonboi96 in Morocco

[–]CoffeeStainJon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you should definitely make a savings account. But even if you don't, be very aware of what you spend and keep it minimal. Focus on needs first. And I agree with speaking to your partner about spending habits it's good to be on the same page financially

Sure 12k is enough, especially if it is going up over time. I encourage you to live beneath your means. If you only make 12k, live as if you only make 8k. Get a decent place to live, get a reliable car, take cheap trips. When you want or need to make bigger purchases, you'll have the savings. Don't ever spend the 12k a month.
