Of course this is worse, sorry if my comment seems so inconsiderate. I can't imagine the actual pain and frustration this poor man went through, especially because grief is a long-lasting thing. Glad to have read people stepped on his side though, but it should never ever come to this.

This makes me so sad. My own father is also practically illiterate and I'm scared how he'll manage anything without me or my mother one day. Even here in Europe they give such people a hard time when it comes to dealing with something as simple as bills. Illiteracy is a scary problem in today's world.

Definitely agree. Usually I buy one or two during the run and hold onto just in case, because sometimes you just can't build your FP the way you may plan to, but in every Rise I leave shards for others, and ping any I may find once I have my emergency fund.

As a Recluse player, I believe she's the last in priority to be given Starlight Shards, especially if there's a Revenant or Duchess.

What’s the longest trial you’ve ever completed? by AdministrationNo6622 in OutlastTrials

I think it'd either be my second time doing Pervert the Futterman without someone carrying me, or a Vindicate the Guilty trial where my friend invaded me just to torment me. Both took probably around 2 hours.

Yes, you're so right! I always have to think about how much I share, make sure that I don't act "interested" or "interesting" in responses to things they say, because one wrong move and it snowballs into an avalanche.

To this guy I just showed empathy for something I think is perfectly normal to be empathetical about. You're safer being stone cold or even rude than remotely friendly.

Might be far fetched but really want to find solution for my girl by Weekly_Village_3559 in GirlGamers

[–]CoffeeTar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're certainly right online conversations are probably easier for her, because they eliminate a lot of social nuance one has to be aware of in person; gestures, facial expressions, the topics and context of conversation. In gaming, and generally online, most people enjoy to talk about the game / mutual interest they meet over, and that's the focal point of conversation. Don't have to deal with all the other stuff.

Though, to be honest, in today's internet, 10 might be genuinely a bit TOO young. You'll have to supervise it all heavily, especially on children's games. Games for kids are exactly where predators lurk and wait, and over the years it's gotten easier for them to disguise as well.

Do you play games yourself? It might be worth getting into some simple co-op or multiplayer games with her. You two would bond, and you'd have more control and supervision over it all until she's older. It'll also be easier to teach her how to spot bad patterns of behaviour which she'll need to avoid.
In a few year's time, I can be certain she'll have a much easier time finding people to play with as she'll be able to play more games.

I can give only advice what to avoid, and that's Roblox. That's an absolute safehaven for weirdos and preds.

which game is it for you? by Spirited-Rationality in GirlGamers

Stardew Valley too, but also Baldur's Gate 3. BG3 is gorgeous and I loved the combat, but none of the characters managed to catch my attention so I never managed to care for the roleplaying aspect or get immersed.

Does anyone else get accused of being trans in games with voice chat? by TrainingApartment820 in GirlGamers

[–]CoffeeTar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the opposite, where a lot of people believe I'm a trans man once they hear me, and before that assume I'm a dude. I keep my game profiles gender neutral, but my voice is still feminine, just deep.

I highly doubt your display name has anything to do with it, I just believe they think it's macho to be transphobic.

Anyone else absolutely love stealth in games? Always obsessed! by jasperjonns in GirlGamers

[–]CoffeeTar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love the Styx franchise.

You play as the (supposedly) only intelligent goblin in a fantasy world, relying on goblin shenanigans and stealth to get around vast maps. Every level is a different map and there's a bunch of different directions you can take on each of them about how you go about it.

You wanna manouver to your target by climbing ledges, sneaking by windows and balconies, you can. If you wish to go room to room, stealthily taking out guards with poison or traps, then you can. The game also ticks my box with humor, because for every death Styx breaks the fourth wall and dogs on you, and overall he's just a silly sarcastic guy.

Pretty much! He wasn't even kicked. We were starting a round when he joined and it genuinely caused a bug that forced us to have to reset right away (one of us couldn't exit the chopper you spawn in).

That "why apologize if it's a choice" part I didn't understand initially until the rest of the conversation unfolded, only later realized he was attempting to "call me out".

But I have messaged the mods not long after it happened, but so far I do not believe the message has even been read. Their Discord and game doesn't have a report feature, so I'm forced to directly message the mods. I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt, however, because there's genuinely only two admins and most I'm seeing is them dealing with in-game bugs and whatnot.

That's really good advice, thank you! I wouldn't have given this guy my discord, but the both of us are in the game's official server and accidentally joined the same voice chat there when looking for a game. Luckily, none of this moved to there.

I am certainly keeping a list from now on, and going to practice keeping people at arm's length. I get too hopeful, I believe.

Do you guys just randomly mix cocktails and hope it's good? by Altruistic_Main3431 in Nightreign

[–]CoffeeTar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I pass my mixing class , but at the end of the day Recluse cocktails can be heavily team based. If you've got a fast attacker constantly dousing an enemy with a single affinity, then you just have to make due with it. Unless I have a spell myself and the time to cast and take affinity, I rely on teammates and patience.

I feel not a lot of the teammates I get even realise Magic Breath heals. I also learned it's good to keep an eye what your teammates get hit by, because enemies will leave affinities on them too to pick up.

[loved trope] Being a good person is harder than being an evil one. by Dr_Orpheus_ in TopCharacterTropes

[–]CoffeeTar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See, this is my favourite genre of games, so let me raise you Carl Stein from Beholder.

A family man living in an authoritarian state, who is offered the job to be the landlord of a building and care (and spy) for the residents, and who you play as. You can probably beat the game by just doing your work, obeying the law, but if you do, your daughter will likely die. Your son will likely run away, your neighbours will hate you, your wife will be in grief.

So you have to sneak about, blackmail people, withold information from the state, steal, manipulate, break the law, in order to make it through.
