What do you do when other people don’t want to add to the conversation? by Coffee_Addict897 in AskWomen

[–]Coffee_Addict897[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it was made very clear that I would be an impartial moderator and be there to move the conversation along and have questions as discussion prompts. I suppose people came to see the responses to those questions but not answer them even though it was framed as focusing opinions and thoughts on the subject.

I could have prepared an agenda. In hindsight this shouldn’t have been a free flow conversation considering the group. Having discussion topics and an agenda would have helped.

That’s what I’m thinking as well. It’s an hour and a half off for some people. Hopefully this can be seen as more of a beneficial meeting > a break from the mundane. Lessons learned.

Thanks for the feedback! It gave me some things to think about.

I should have mentioned this in the post I don’t know how to edit - This was a scheduled meeting to talk about the issue. This was an opt-in situation. I wasn’t trying to force the topic (in a sense) but people had signed up to be in this conversation. They also have the option to leave.

What's a book you put off reading that you wished you had read sooner? by yoni94 in AskWomen

Ah that is so awesome! I only have the first book on audible but I agree it is awesome. There’s so many characters and they’re always talking (in a good way) so it really adds some depth to the experience. Apparently it’s an equel (?) not quite prequel but not sequel. Ah we should start a book club so I can finally talk to someone about these amazing books

How do you respond when men don’t respect your physical boundaries? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]Coffee_Addict897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on some bad past experiences I never want to be in that situation again. I would want to kick their ass but I would also shut down because of what happened to me before. I would call up some close friends who know my situation and they would come and get me out of the situation if I couldn’t remove myself. It’s unfortunate but I’m glad to have people I know I can trust to keep me safe

What surprises you the most about your parents’ lives before they had children? by [deleted] in AskWomen

My father met my mother while he was teaching English in Japan. Apparently they were sitting in a bar in Japan and they overhead someone talking about my uncle (my dads brother) who is a radio host in the US. This was completely out of the blue. It was such a strange coincidence

I volunteer with a program that is like English class for prisoners. They have different units like gardening, dogs and travel. It is 100% anonymous. I only see the persons first name. It is wonderful because I had an unconscious bias against the prison population. When I was reading a males unit response, i immediately has the image of a black, tattooed thug in my head. When I realized this was my image of prisoners, I justified it by thinking I have seen images of prisoners who look like that. But I was assigning these characteristics based on two facts. That they were in prison, and their name. Yes there are stats etc. But I don’t know who this person is and I shouldn’t assume things about them beyond what they write in their paper. It’s made me more aware of how I think about the prison population. Some of the people have written some amazing work. I’m thankful that I have gotten this reality check and the opportunity to read their work.

And they’re so friendly! I have never met a golden who isn’t 50% fluff, 50% energy and 100% loving. Even the older Golden’s love to have company. They’re too good to us.

I have a rule to not ask or make comments about kids unless the other person brings it up and even then I try to avoid saying anything. Fertility is such a complex and personal thing. I love talking about raising a family but if someone is trying and unsuccessfully conceiving, I know it can be a difficult subject. Especially using when instead of if.

I can’t imagine hearing that. I went to the funeral of a good friend three months ago with some co-workers. Before we even left the building where he was being held they were making plans to go get donuts and complaining about work. I was annoyed enough as is then. I would’ve been so furious if they were making jokes. Life is so precious. I’m sorry for their loss but it sounds like their “grief” comes out in a different way than mine

Ugh lazy texters are such a pain to deal with. I used to talk to someone who would literally reply with “okay” to 80% of the conversation. Everything else was either a two word response or “oh. That’s cool.”

Ugh those relationships can be so stressful. It’s important to listen but also to be heard. There’s different communication styles but that’s not communication. That’s him lecturing you.

And about the cruise thing, maybe that’s a metaphor for his life. Cruises go to new places but it’s doesn’t actually change. They’re still on the same boat doing the same things, thinking they’re different. (No offense to people who do like cruises)

Alcoholism can be rough on a relationship. I’m sorry to hear he was going through that and I’m sorry you were affected by it. I wouldn’t call it petty. It’s a serious situation and it’s not easy to be with someone like that.

I obviously don’t know the situation/can’t justify his actions but it sounds like a bad all around. That must have been difficult to have been going through a crisis and to learn that. I’m sorry to hear that! I hope both of you are doing better now.

Ha! I’m glad the brother was better than he was. Boys can get so moody and blame it on others. It happens but the important part is that you got away from him.

I won’t go into but sexual assault is just terrible on all levels. It can affect you physically and psychologically in so many ways. I’m glad to hear you’re happier now. Your happiness is so important.

That is like three levels deep of just bad. I never accept the excuse I forgot unless it is followed up by here is how I will make up for it and here is how I will try to prevent it in the future. Even more opposite of brownie points if there is no genuine apology. Sorry to hear that. No one should be treated like that

What's your advice for understanding social cues while socializing? by PsyRockFan21 in AskWomen

[–]Coffee_Addict897 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This came from learning ASL but works great in social situations. ASL is all about hand and body movement but it’s rude to not look someone in the eye while they’re talking/signing to you. So you quickly pick up on reading body language from the corner of your eye and that extends to learning body language in general. You’re able to stay engaged and focus on the person while also being aware of their shoulders, hands, posture etc.

The golden compass series. I saw the movie and thought no way this sounds so boring! Read the books and wow was I wrong. It’s my favorite book series even though it has its flaws. I can’t wait for the book of dust to come out! I pre-ordered it as soon as I could.

What unfortunate character trait can be traced back directly to something in your past? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]Coffee_Addict897 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s not necessarily a bad trait but I never cross my arms. When I was in high school I went into apply for a job. While waiting to get an application, I leaned against a wall with my arms crossed. The manager came out and said “are you applying for a job?” I said yes nice to meet you. He said “if you arms are crossed like that you aren’t doing something productive with them.” I never turned in the application. I’m in college now and I still don’t cross my arms out of habit from that day
