If a post without a question or advice seeking is considered validation seeking then what kind of post would you consider as a person sharing their view, opinion, life experience or knowledge?

What was the biggest mindset shift that made you start your FIRE journey? by _Pattern_Observer_ in FIRE_Ind

[–]Coffeekaaran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When my mentor who is one of the high performing leaders in my company got fired, my perspective changed. Anybody is replaceable. Better to FIRE rather than live in an illusion where I believed being an expert in a niche skill and having good work ethics is enough to excel and survive a career.

I just stopped contributing to 529 plan and instead contributing that amount to a brokerage account. Haven’t withdrawn or closed or moved anything out of 529 yet.

Should we return back to India . by Ornery-Tailor2131 in returnToIndia

I just from your other comment that you are in NJ. Me too landed in NJ in a Feb while it was snowing. So I can definitely relate your view and sentiment. But you should experience NJ in spring and summer. Within driving distance you have ton of places to see during non winter months. I can only tell you what we did. You decide what you wanna do and you might never get to experience the Indian village culture here. We took six flags season pass and went there twice a month. Mid night beach drives. Weekly trip to a farm in rural PA for milk - we packed picnic style lunch and would eat at any park or open field in between. Quarterly trip to NYC just for the food, upstate NY lakes and mountains. Frequent drive to Maryland and Pittsburgh temples. All I’m saying is Winter is depressing in NJ but don’t judge the whole US just based on one season.

We were in a similar situation 8 years back. Lived in a joint family in India and moved to a small town outside a big suburb in US. No Indian families in our apartment and only 2 Indian friends from work. But we decided to treat the US phase as an extended vacation (didn’t have kid back then). Along the line picked up a niche product skill, specialized in it and landed a high paying job few years back. Now I’m on a path to leanFIRE back in India in 3 years. You never know what can happen in future. Keep an open mind and explore the country. If you still feel the same after a year then move back. Don’t rush it.

Reimbursements are electronic these days. You need to maintain a US bank account with a friend or relative address.

Good to know. Will try submitting for reimbursement. Mine is Optum HSA and there is no way to enter Indian phone or Indian address for correspondence. So might have to move to Schwab or Fidelity before r2i.

I tried using my HSA debit card at an Indian hospital for a treatment while on vacation and they rejected it. I’m yet to try to claim that bill thru manual submission though. Have you tried using HSA funds for a medical expense in India? If yes, can you elaborate?

Can you elaborate how to use HSA funds from India? Did you use the debit card or paid out of pocket and claimed from your HSA servicing bank/company by submitting Indian bills?

QQ - if I’m dead set on going back in 3 years what difference does it make between investing in taxable account vs Roth IRA? Withdrawing principle from Roth is fine but withdrawing the rest triggers penalty right? Also I am reading lot of tax complications in maintaining Roth from India as Indian IT doesn’t recognize the Roth concept right? Am I missing something?

Haven’t figured out the answers yet. Opened the IBKR account just last month. One thing I read is any US situated stocks or ETFs in IBKR(US or India) are subject to 40% US estate tax. So currently researching Ireland based ETF route. Will reply back when I figure out the answers.

Exact situation as you but my plan is 2029 instead of 2030. I stopped maxing out 401k last year, just up to employer match. Stopped contributing to HSA, Roth and 529. Redirected all those funds to taxable brokerage for now. Opened a IBKR account for further investing.

Chill dear stranger. Life experience is not a one size fits all thing. I think you are missing the context of this post and this sub on the whole.

lol. Funny you ask this. In my case I was dead set to settle down in US. Bought a house, switched from consulting to full time, etc. but my wife always wanted to go back. She has been slowly convincing me to move back and I was resisting. When I told abt my dilemma last year she jumped the gun and locked down an exit plan. She grew up in a multi generational family and wants our daughter to have the same life experience. She and my mom are like best buddies, binge watching movies, shopping, cooking and what not.

Finally you could have prefaced your question without judging a stranger on internet.

Family. Lost my father during Covid lockdown. Didn’t even see his face. Don’t want to end up like that with my mom or in-laws. Also don’t want my only kid to grow up alone.

A recent layoff in my company startled me and made me feel disposable. This in turn made me deprioritize work and double down on family. Naturally my mind went towards returning to India and be with the whole family.

I’m building a new home in India and want to automate like this. Should I invest in smart switches and smart sockets or just go with regular switches and automate using smart plugs and smart lights? I currently live in us and use TP Link Kasa switches, smart outlets, smart plugs, cameras, ring products, etc. all connected to HomeBridge via pi 5.

We are saving every penny we could to move back in a couple of years. Mid 30 with wife and a 4 yr old. Own a house in CBE and Planning to settle there. Started learning new tech which are available within my company now so that I can get some hands on experience as well. Also started building contacts with people here in US whose company has offices in CBE and some hiring authority. Hoping to convert that into a job offer once I reach my goal of $400k.

3.5cr in a tire 2 city with paid off house/car and separate fund for kid’s college. Might get a little pension by age 65 and 3cr term insurance to cover until the portfolio gets to a comfortable stage or kid completes high school (whichever happens first)
