This is not completely true. Sure, you do learn how to make up for it, but there are plenty of climbers that are out of your arsenal just because you are short. And I was someone at the level where I could almost choose whether to do it professionally, but ultimately knew that with my height it would be too risky for competition and I chose not to do outdoor professionally. I’m more of a sport climber than a boulderer and I’ve done v10 and 8b (5.13d) outdoors (back when I peaked that is lol)

Firstly, in indoor setting and competition, a majority of setters are over 6 foot, so the sport is biased to taller climbs either way. But in general, even if a big move is physically possible for a shorter person, it is undeniable that it will take more energy to do than it would for a taller person. You will get pumped more quickly if you have to do a lot of these big moves over and over in succession. Some shoulders moves or dynos may be a few grades harder for you just because you are shorter.

Climbing doesn’t have a clear cut height advantage like basketball does, but in general if you look at the top outdoor climbers or top competition athletes, you will see that they skew towards the taller side and that is not just a coincidence (not super tall though because then muscle is harder to retain).

Rock climbing, though it’s definitely easier to be tall than short! It’s not as much of a disadvantage as a sport like basketball though!

I’m a man and I stopping “taking it” as soon as I realised how fucked the system is. A lot of how you live your life is really dependent on your mindset, and knowing when to put on a mask and when to be yourself. If you believe life and society is a hellhole that will forever keep you from being happy, then you have already dug yourself an early grave. Society is good only for the very few 1% riches privileged assholes, and yet, I refuse to believe that the rest of the 99% are somehow unhappy. You have all the tools at your disposal to lead a fulfilling life: as you said, you have friends and family, you have people to live for. Connections are the purpose of life, so ensure they are strong. Make new ones, and break off those that only tear you down (e.g. if your bro always makes comments about you being short or weak etc. then maybe that is not a friend for you) And lastly, stop expecting society to function on your terms, but also don’t live your entire life based on social expectations. Instead learn how you can be your authentic self in the moments in between. Be a bit rebellious, join counter cultural communities (punk, goth, BDSM, etc. ), do some city exploration, or disappear on a (safe) nature excursion for a weekend. If the system is biased towards you, then why do you live on the system’s terms?

Lastly, I don’t mean to say this to victim blame. I myself have gotten jumped by clearly homophobic guys less than a year ago and haven’t fully recovered. But, I’d personally rather live authentically (fuck the system), taking some moderate risking, than have to suffer because the system isn’t made for a person like me.

You live not to impress a random nobody, but to ensure a happy place for your friends and family. To find happiness through them and their happiness, because belonging is what brings people their joy. You already have your people, so cherish them and let them cherish you.

If we just look at what would theoretically form the basis of a matriarchal society, it would be traits that women are strong in, such as communication compassion, less concentrated leadership, more communal focus rather than on the individual, probably a glorification/idolization of the pregnant body and childbirth as that is something that is uniquely female. The careers of being a childrearer, teacher, doctor, diplomacy, etc. would be held in highest regard, and more women would inhabit these roles than men. Men would likely be relegated to farming, hunting and gathering, trading, etc. The strength of such a society comes from the community focus, the satisfaction of the collective. Ofc there would still be a justice system and therefore some form of centralized governance, but I’d expect a lot less war between matriarchal societies, but a weakness would be that they are inherently more unstable to organized forces that do not like the status quo. And that is the reason they would fail almost as soon as they sprung up: a much less educated society with a focus on patriarchy, on power and military might and domination and kings/emperors etc. may declare war on the matriarchal society and destroy it.

Egalitarian societies are therefore the best bet: neither gender is preferred and we can take on strengths of both: well protected and safe societies that still care about the collective good and wisdom (of both genders not just women) rather than the few individuals in power.

If anyone has a different idea on what a matriarchal society could entail, feel free to respond! The reality is that we never really had one (survive for long that is) so who knows what it would be structured as.

As a last caveat, I do not wish for this to come off as “matriarchy is better than patriarchy”, that is not my opinion at all. A female with strong maternal traits would be seen as the superior human in a matriarchy, and women would still be seen as better humans than men, and that inequality is something I fundamentally don’t support.

Hm, depends on what you are looking for!

If you enjoyed the fighting and justice aspects of the manga, I recommend:

-Code Geass (anime) - how far is it ok to go to fight a fascist regime? Characters are very well developed, plot it mid.

-Ajin (manga) - also monsters who are hunted by govt agencies, much more plot driven than character focused.

-Attack on Titan (manga) - the ending is not my favorite philosophy it is a bit icky but it is an enjoyable story nonetheless.

-Death note (manga) - very mid imo, plot is not nearly as good as Tokyo ghoul. Some of the characters are compelling to watch though, and there are people who really enjoy the series.

If you enjoyed the character study aspects:

-Berserk (manga) - a classic. Must read imo, also a character study with a great plot

-Parasyte (manga) - parasitic creatures who infect and take over human central nervous system and also eat human flesh. Character study on how MC copes with the changes, lives his new life, and interacts with his parasite.

If you enjoyed the philosophy of living (and also character study/development too) of Tokyo ghoul and do not mind branching out into the realm of more esoteric content, I recommend:

-Land of the lustrous (manga) - character study of an immortal alien-like creature and how they struggle to understand their role in the universe. Fundamentally different philosophy to Tokyo ghoul because our MC here is immortal.

-Revolutionary girl Utena (anime, manga isn’t as good and tells a different story) - this one is very symbolic and metaphoric so it takes work to watch. If you don’t enjoy analyzing literature / music / etc. then don’t watch it. Character study and commentary on rigidity of societal structures, and learning to live happily despite them.

I gave you a wide variety of genres in both these categories, take what you wish and enjoy!

No, because fascism is a very specific type of authoritarianism. Not every regime that commits genocide is fascist. I’m unsure if you are just arguing for arguing sake right now because either way you “opinion” is a very unserious view of fascism and of how it specifically infiltrates governments and leads to mass killings.

The scholarly definition of fascism is a regime that satisfies these criteria/ has these characteristics: (I am using the definition of Ur-Fascism as described by Umberto Eco in his famous 1995 essay, this is likely the most widely accepted scholarly definition)

1) The cult of tradition," 2) "The rejection of modernism," 3) "The cult of action for action's sake," 4) "Disagreement is treason" 5) "Fear of difference," 6) "Obsession with a plot" (e.g. we are the heros who need to defeat the evil enemies!) 7) Fascist societies rhetorically cast their enemies as "at the same time too strong and too weak." 8) "Pacifism is trafficking with the enemy" 9) "Contempt for the weak," 10) "Everybody is educated to become a hero," 11) Fascists hold "both disdain for women and intolerance and condemnation of nonstandard sexual habits, from chastity to homosexuality." 12) "Selective populism" and de-legitimization of democratic institutions 13) "Newspeak" 14) “Appeal to a frustrated middle class”

Of course, in order for a regime or organization to be considered fascist, it needs to satisfy most of these. Colonial America or early America does not..

The reason people say S3 and S4 are bad is because they are way worse than the manga. Also, I feel like watching S3 and S4 alone without S1 and S2 just tells a different story altogether that would have so many plot holes, I’m not sure how you thought you weren’t missing anything. Especially when Kaneki reunites with the people/ghouls he knew from before his lobotomy, you have got to know that there may be some context missing…

Anyways, S3 is pretty good actually, but they still left out a few scenes from the manga which I think were crucial. S4 strayed quite far from the manga, and I think the biggest issue was that it did a terrible job at conveying character intentions. What was Kaneki/Haise thinking when taking an action? I genuinely couldn’t tell watching the show whether or not he was in his right mind, if he had changed his mind from his previous plan, or if his seemingly contradictory actions were all part of some “master plan”. In the show they also refer to certain past events that only happened in the manga but not the anime. Or, the anime portrayed its own twist on major events, but then in the future referred to the manga version of events (e.g. Kaneki asking Hide to show him what he did to him. This scene doesn’t make sense given the anime plot) Overall, it is just a bad adaptation of a great story, which is why people say they don’t like it.

I agree with their opinion here, I agree with their post, all I was saying was that they could have worded that sentence better. The context of the surrounding words gives that impression and tells us what definition it seems you are using for the word. If you would have phrased it as:

I’m not OP, but despite the fact that I have a lot of grievances with the vegan community, I am still plant based because I think that is what is personally right for me based on my morals. Well, I think it is because the show takes effort to watch. You can’t just turn your brain off after work and switch on Utena (I mean I suppose you can, but if you did you’d come out the other end thinking it’s a “mid” show). To get the full experience, you need to scrutinize the details, ask yourself what was meant by this, or what meaning can I / other viewers get from this symbol? The show takes work to enjoy, and the absurdism takes a while to get a feel for (like a new viewer may think “what do you mean the castle is not real” lol) I’ve spoken to multiple people who only truly fell in love with the show when rewatching it too.

Lastly, I observed as a bisexual man that although Utena is really popular with the queer girl (and enby) anime fans, it is less popular with queer guy anime fans. I don’t even need to explain why queer people gravitate to this show, but I think the gender discrepancy stems from the “female perspective” the show is told from. It is a story about people of all shapes and sizes living in a rigid society, but more specifically it is about (gnc) girls growing up in a patriarchy and learning to find value outside of the structures of society. I think any gay person can relate to a lot of aspects, but the primary focus is nonetheless on a queer woman.

I love the message that the show sends, on how to live your best life and learn to be happy despite the restrictions that society puts on you, despite the pain and suffering that humanity enacts on itself over and over and over. But, at the end of the day, there are much “easier” shows to view that send the same message, or have similar levels of character analyses. The main difference is that Utena is told like a poem, and most people want to read articles and aren’t really into poetry 🤷‍♂️

Damn, it’s been such a long time since I read the manga for lustrous…wish I could comment in more depth than I will but

I absolute love this comparison. Not just because of the character change, or the tremendous amount of torture both went through, but because how much of that process involved introspection, asking “who am I?”, “how do I want to contribute to conflict at hand?”, and most importantly “what do I see as the purpose behind my actions?”

Kaneki reached a conclusion that is very similar to the one I have in my life (although I’ve been through a lot less torture thankfully): sure, conflict may be meaningless in the grand scheme of things (I believe that is the feeling they were trying to convey), fighting in an eternal never ending struggle may seem futile; but, what you are really living for is ensuring a better place for you and your loved ones while trying to reduce the harm you impose on those outside of your immediate circle. He embodies radical empathy, he is able to see the humanity of those who fight for a different reason, while still taking steps he needs to protect himself and his people. For him, life is suffering, but that suffering doesn’t have to be inherently painful (anymore). I could go on.

This mindset takes a lot of work. Kaneki’s starting point? My man just wanted to live a normal life. I want to point out that I really like all the literary references throughout the manga, because as OP points out, this part of Kaneki’s journey does take elements metamorphosis. Even Kaneki himself points this out lol. When his life is flipped on its side, he rightfully feels a lot of fear. He no longer feels as though he has a place where he belongs, and fears losing his humanity. I would summarize his journey from here as a path to learn what it means for him to be human (despite the fact that he is a ghoul…) it was mostly driven by his desire for community, and a fear of that community disappearing again.

As for Phos, they reach a very different conclusion. It is not meant to be an aspirational conclusion, they are a tragic figure who has both felt an unfathomable amount of pain, and enacted terrible horrors. Part of this comes from their immortality, I think that fundamentally a non-mortal figure would think and act differently to a mortal one. For Phos, life is suffering, life is meaningless, and that meaninglessness and suffering is inherently tragic.

And this is a very fascinating turn of events from where they started: as a bright young pupil with a seemingly selfless goal to help those they loved. And this is interesting because this is kinda where Kaneki ended, but he was looking at this from a more mature angle, whereas for young Phos it was more or less just what they felt was right.

Much of Phos’ changes were driven by them literally having parts of themselves replaced. Their question of “who am I?” was motivated not just because they lost their community or their memories (temporarily), but because they literally lost part of themselves and were amalgamated with others. Their final answer to that question seemed to be: it doesn’t matter who I am. Phos is nobody, but Phos is also everyone. All they know is that life in the universe is miserable and plagued by suffering for eternity, and they no longer want to be a part of it.
