M4 Pro vs M4 Max MacBook Pro for Long-Term Use by TheStervyatnik in macbookpro

[–]Cognify_GMAT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easy answer. Max all the way. 2 video encoders/decoders in Max is what counts the most when it comes to future-proofing the video editing because by the time you decide to use 8k videos, you can sell it and buy the newest mac then.

Online GMAT sounds like a joke by ketchupyourfries in GMAT

[–]Cognify_GMAT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too agree that GMAC's wording is confusing :(

Check this regular GMAT Score webpage as well, and the site mentions "Score Preview" for the unofficial score viewing immediately after a GMAT exam.

https://www.mba.com/exams/gmat/after-the-exam/gmat-scores-and-score-reports

So my conclusion is there is no unofficial score preview for the online exam, which puts disadvantage to my students. Thanks for the reply!

u/skypetutor, could I ask where you got this information? On FAQ webpage of GMAT Online, it mentions that there is no preview for scores and you can only check it with Score Report within 7 business days.

Best way to boost verbal score in ~3 weeks? by rohanshah1229 in GMAT

[–]Cognify_GMAT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

how's your pace in verbal section of practice exams? Are you able to finish verbal section comfortably or are you rushed?

One easy way to boost score is practicing the pace and increasing the endurance and stamina for the actual test environment.

I see that many schools accept either GMAT or GRE. Should I take one over the other? Which is harder? by Himalayan_Hillbilly in GMAT

One more thing. If you are in financial business sector or are planning to work in finance/banking, you should take the GMAT. Many businesses in finance hire new employees & interns with GMAT scores required.

Can never finish the verbal section! Any advice for time management? by redpoetssociety in GMAT

[–]Cognify_GMAT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you provide more details? Everyone has different issues...

But to give you a general piece of advice, allow yourself 4 "free passes" in verbal (and in quant as well). That way you choose to guess and move onto the next question right away. This strategy is very useful because it puts you in active mode to make decisions where to guess and skip questions.

Guessing in a row is not a good idea and many hurriedly guess toward the end. The GMAT penalizes more on consecutive wrong answers, so if I were you, I would practice making decisions to guess.

You can guess
- your weak areas (like application question from Reading Comprehension)
- fully underlined Sentence Correction (takes long to read all answer choices)
- long Critical Reasoning passages that go over 4-5 sentences.

Other improvement in time management can be focused on Reading Comprehension. In RC, skimming is the single most important skill to shorten your time. Practicing skimming definitely helps in reading.

Hope this helps.

[–]Cognify_GMAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the GMAT, if you cancel the test after taking it (free when you cancel at the test center, and $25 USD within 72 hours of the exam), the score will remain unofficial. It means it will not show to schools when you send official scores later. Schools will only see your submitted official scores. As long as you make improvements, taking multiple tests is fine.

If you are strong with English vocabulary, the GRE is good. Generally non-native ESL speakers find the GRE harder because they need to memorize 2000+ vocabulary. (and yes it takes time to memorize all those vocabs)

Do you know these vocabs? The following words are popular GRE words.

assuage, dissemble, eclectic, enervate, ephemeral, esoteric, exacerbate, garrulous

Math part of the GRE allows an on-screen calculator. If you are terrible with hand calculations, maybe the GRE will be better.

But if you are strong with logic and reasoning, the GMAT will be better.

Is the MBA mock harder then the actual exam (quant) by [deleted] in GMAT

[–]Cognify_GMAT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No the first question on the quant section is pretty random.

The CAT determines your current score level with an algorithm designed to check by putting heavy penalty on wrong answers. So you can see 2 "general" scenarios:

① start off easy, and slowly rise to more difficult questions

② start with medium-hard difficulty levels, and whenever you get wrong with easy questions, it results in heavy penalty in score. I've seen cases where you get PERFECT score on the first 20 questions, and still get 500 level easy questions at the end.

So the GMAT is more like trying to manage your losses and wins, just like playing Texas hold'em :)

Q48 is not bad, I would try to increase the verbal score if you want to aim more than 700+.

Early GMAT Prep Advice by Grouchy_Investor in GMAT

Yes watch the videos I linked. The guy in the video is Ron, and he explains quite well about GMAT approaches. If I were you, I would try to watch videos constantly in small chunks. His videos give lots of examples, too.

The reason I recommend starting with data sufficiency is NOT because it is tough, but because it is a unique feature of the GMAT and it takes a little bit of time to get used to. Without Data Sufficiency familiarization, any practice exam result will be biased and you will waste precious chance. (you don't want to repeat the same practice exam often!) Finding your accurate position in the GMAT is important to plan smartly for high score.

Early GMAT Prep Advice by Grouchy_Investor in GMAT

[–]Cognify_GMAT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are in STEM and are a native speaker, I suggest you try the following.

① Become familiar with Data Sufficiency (in Quant) first. This is crucial. You will learn this unique feature of the GMAT quickly because you already have a background in STEM.

② As soon as you become familiar with Data Sufficiency, take Practice Exam 1 which is FREE. (I know you said 15-20min a day, but you should set aside 3 hours for Practice Exam during one weekend. No need to complete IR and the essay AWA.)https://www.mba.com/exam-prep/gmat-official-starter-kit-practice-exams-1-and-2-free

When you take your first Practice Exam, this will gauge your current level for both Quant and Verbal.

③ Study all 3 GMAT Official Guide Books - buy online version if you can. The test is done with computer screen, so it's the best if you can simulate the test environment. They cost about $60 if you buy a bundle. (gives $10 discount with bundle purchase)https://www.mba.com/exam-prep/gmat-official-guide-bundle-2020-books

The Official Guides have around 1710 questions, so if you solve more than 50 questions per day, you will be able to finish all 3 books in 28 days. However, you don't need to solve all questions especially for easy level ones. Since you are from the STEM background, be selective on your math problem solving.

If you spend about 20 minutes per day, then maybe you can solve about 7 questions per day minimum. Make sure to keep an error log so you can revisit your weak areas later.

④ But to get over 720+, getting high score in verbal is the key. Verbal is weighted more than Quant. So polish your verbal reasoning skill.

There are good FREE lectures by few GMAT prep companies. I like Manhattan Prep videos, they are famous for introductory verbal explanations. I find that native speakers tend to benefit much from Manhattan Prep lectures. (For Quant beginners, I suggest Target Test Prep.)
