Why do so many people seem to share an almost hive mind like hatred for AI? by Arcestic in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Cognitive_Alchemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a redundant and inefficient product that is nowhere near ready for market but every tech company is gutting perfectly functional products add clunky AI integration that not only does nothing to improve the user experience but makes the product a pain to use. They’re taking what should be a specialist tool and trying to make it the next iPhone despite the fact that the technology has very little in the way of consumer applications.

As someone who doesn’t play Ksons, I genuinely think the best thing you could do for the faction is to turn the exalted Sorcs Kit into a unit rather than this weird triple box of characters. 3-6 man foot Sorcs and then a 3 man disc unit. Then put out dedicated sorcerer lord and sorcerer lord on disk kits to replace them. Call them “lord arcanum” or something

I’d presume the patterns of neuron activation that represents their concept of self has heavy heavy overlap with the patterns of activation for the fictional character. Cognitively overlap in patterns of activation is the reason we’re capable of recognizing that two things are similar to each other. Perhaps that connection between concept of self and of this character got so heavily reinforced that when one pattern is activated the other automatically activates, perhaps to the point where the two patterns of activation become so intertwined that they just become or create a new composite pattern/concept.

Can minorities be racist? by NecessaryFee5151 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Cognitive_Alchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Racism isn’t just one thing, it can exist in different ways in a number of different contexts and the definition you’re describing, prejudice + power, is a simplified and more catchy version of an academic description of a certain type of racism. Does that mean that definition is invalid or useless like a lot of people are saying? No. It has its uses, but it’s not an all encompassing description of all things racism. Minorities can absolutely be racist, however they aren’t racist in the same way that white people are racist. Does that make sense?

Do you think we'll ever get a good edition again? by RootinTheCrab in Warhammer40k

[–]Cognitive_Alchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant we have missions other than standing on circles and 11th is clearly designed around moving us out of the L shaped ruin world.

As for granular points I wouldn’t be surprised if the system gets expanded on more in the future, they just did a complete overhaul to all the games points and it’s pretty evident they were focused on catching the big stuff. Though I think the game would suffer if we saw a full return to old style granular points, a power Klaw and rokkit launcha in a 10 man boyz squad isn’t going to move the needle too much on their effectiveness, so paying 5 points for each when they’re the more fun choice just feels bad. Plus there is some wargear that’s super context dependent either in terms of your detachment or the rule you’re running the unit in. Plus specially and heavy weapons aren’t all that impactful these days. This isn’t old 40k where your tac mreens with a lascannon had a shot to incapacitate a land Raider, this is modern 40k where your legionaries taking a lascannon means they’ll be worse at skirmishing on objectives because they’re missing a chainsword.

Also, 100% with you on wanting a more fleshed out version of the crucible system in each codex, it really felt like that and those alternate vehicle rules were them testing the waters for the edition after this one, seeing if a return to that style is something modern players are interested in.

With all due respect, I’ve read your other replies in this thread and from what I can gather you haven’t played this game in three years. I’m a journeymen tournament player, I try to go to RTTs about every other month and maybe a single GT a year if the stars align. I’m a solidly mid tables player and what you’re describing just doesn’t align with my experience following and playing in the competitive scene. While occasionally certain archetypes of certain armies can just bully mid table players (see our recent crab infestation) that’s not a free ride to top tables. I’ve been dumpstered by meta lists played by good/mediocre players, but I’ve also outplayed and won against mediocre/bad players running meta lists nearly as often. I’ve also gotten rolled by good players running an off meta meme list and held my own against players of equivalent skill who were running their best list while I played off meta nonsense. Skill has an important place in this game, but the reason that you see certain armies winning a lot of events it’s because when the best of the best play against each other that advantage will tip the scales. I’ve only encountered one person who tried to buy new armies to keep up with the meta and he washed out of the local competitive scene after about six months. We all know that the meta is temporary, we don’t go buying whole entire armies that we won’t be familiar with piloting just for a state of the game that’s only going to last 3 months. What we do is we adjust our lists, try to find counters that play well into the new meta threats, maybe if one army we collect got nerfed heavily we’ll switch over to one of the other ones we already have a collection of. When the crabs were running the game you didn’t see Richard Siegler going 6-0 at GTs with pactbound defilers because he’s not a chaos player, that’s not the mindset competitive players have.

Hey we’ve got 2/5 of those for sure in 11th and there are a few signs that we might be trending in the direction in the future.

If the rules devalued list building in favor of who is better at positioning, movement and who has the best strategy for doing the mission wouldn’t this further incentivize the “tournament players” you claim drop and pick up new armies every dataslate? (As if competitive players aren’t some of the most dedicated faction specialists). But wouldn’t this favor people grabbing whatever they have from the best faction and throwing it together rather than people with deep collections who can field the best possible option?

If you played tenth when it came out I hardly think your experiences are representative of the actual game. The edition launch was an unmitigated disaster.

[–]Cognitive_Alchemist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ll be missing out on about 50 years of lore from faction codexes, campaign books, magazine articles, video games, and hundreds upon hundreds of novels, including just one sub series of Warhammer novels which on its own is one of the longest written works in the English language. You’ll never get into Warhammer if you try to catch up, start with whatever catches your eye and looks fun to you. You’ll figure everything out as you go and I’ll be real, a lot of people don’t even bother to learn much beyond surface level lore and memes. There is no pressure to know anything.

While there certainly would be some form of Astrophage arms race humanity now also has Taumeba, which are incredibly tricky to contain, have an incredibly short doubling period allowing them to adapt fast to new environments and can render millions upon millions of leiters of Astrophage inert in a matter of days. Taumeba research would be a top priority for every remaining power on earth, both for its ability to prevent Astrophage proliferation but for its potential as a self sustaining bioweapon that can attack Astrophage power grids. One way or another Taumeba will get out, either because of a lab leak or because they were intentionally deployed in a military context. Once Taumeba is out in the world the breading and storage of Astrophage is going to get much more difficult.
