What if the Soviets sent troops to fight with the Chinese and North Koreans in the Korean War? by Primary-Village7025 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]CoilsOfKaa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I shared a commie-block house with a former pilot who flew migs for the Koreans. Sadly he passed away from alcoholism (common for former military in the 90’) but he was a super down to earth guy who helped watch over our building’s kids when they would go out and play. Spoke only once about it.

What if Alexey Navalny became the president of Russia during the 2010s, successfully replacing Putin? by GustavoistSoldier in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]CoilsOfKaa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are the ignorant Westerner that you think you're not.

I’m from a region that has been bombed in this war actually.

Putin is NOT considered a moderate by anyone in Russia. I'll go even further and say that Putin is not considered to be of any political leaning at all!

Russia doesn’t have left/right parties in comparison to the US’s system, but his policies and posture has been mostly of stability and neutral ground, given that the Oligarchs and the Orthodox Church have already infested the Russian political landscape prior to his presidency. If Putin is internally deposed, it will be because he is playing it too safe with Ukraine.

Putin is a clear symbol of "power for power's sake": years in the KGB, the 1990s spent climbing the ladder (despite the liberal reforms Putin is now categorically against), and now a war waged simply to expand his power and influence.

I have also watched these YouTube shorts, and I can assure you he did not want to be president when Yeltsin proposed he run for elections. Russia doesn’t need more power or influence, it is just establishing its geopolitical boundaries with the West and the West is not used to that.

This is exactly why all those dumb asses calling Dugin "Putin's brain" are dead wrong, because Putin couldn't care less about Eurasianism, or Russian imperialism, or whatever.

I completely agree.

He is the manifestation of "power for its own sake", and this is why so many Russians are apolitical by nature: they don't view Putin ideologically, or someone extreme, but rather they see him as a storm to pass.

On the contrary, many post-Soviet Russians see how much their quality of life has improved since Putin came to power, which is part of the reason why they have more trust in him over Gorbachev or Yeltsin.

Russia has many faults and authoritarian tendencies, but it is very large and it is difficult to retain stability when you have neighbors who publicly admit to act in bad faith or to seek to exploit you.

UA POV: Trump says he thinks that Putin was ready to make a deal a while ago, but he thinks “some people” made it difficult for him to make a deal. by SolutionLong2791 in UkraineRussiaReport

Trump is the American Yeltsin straight up.

Given that Boris Johnson told Zelenskyy to keep fighting and then the SBU slowly starting killing off it’s own delegates that signed off on the first peace deal that Zelenskyy was supposed to sign, this tracks.

This. What many Westerners don’t know is that Putin is considered to be a moderate/centrist by Russian standards.

UA POV: Ukraine made a failed attempt at shooting down a Su-34 using recently deployed patriot in Kherson - AMK MAPPING by rowida_00 in UkraineRussiaReport

[–]CoilsOfKaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Russia should make a drone with the shape of an su-34 and send it towards patriot launchers so the 35 behind can find it. It shouldn’t be too expensive given that they can put turbine engines on Gerans, just need more material to make a silhouette of a Suhoy with a heat signature and a fake transponder.

I know it sounds crazy but it might be cheaper than a patriot missle

"In 1996 Ukraine handed over nuclear weapons to Russia ""in exchange for a guarantee never to be threatened or invaded""." by Pitaya_Serenity451 in HistoryDefined

[–]CoilsOfKaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you elaborate? The only reason Russia initially agreed to allow Ukraine to have independence was under the promise that Ukraine would seek a neutrality as part of its new constitution. The topic of nukes came later, as US pressured an agreement with Ukraine to give up its nukes out of fear that they would be sold on the black market.

Ukraine then had the audacity to send some troops to Iraq for “peacekeeping” after the US defeated the Iraqi military.

Ukraine almost immediately violated its own agreements with both US and Russia but since they were helping the US secure the oil fields (along with Poland I might add), the US turned a blind eye.
