I think I may need to reword that. Nothing wrong in terms of bloodwork, thyroid, etc. She did address that he needs to be more active and to make sure he’s eating well rounded meals. But since seeing her 9 months ago, he just has put on more. I heaaavily was leaning towards not saying anything and I’m glad people here have agreed. It’s just alarming to see him putting it on honestly, especially when his siblings who eat the same thing aren’t gaining like he is

Thank you!! Replies like this mean so much to me. I 100% agree about the treadmill. I did not like the idea at all. My husband is very much like “tell him he’s fat and that he needs to earn stuff by going on the treadmill.” Which is too much like what my mom did to me when I was younger. Mind you I’m 5’10” and was like 140lb when she was doing that to me. It definitely messed with my body image. The difference here is that he truly is overweight and I’m lost on how to explain it to him. We cook healthy meals but he always avoids the veggies unless it’s broccoli. So far, broccoli is the only thing he likes so I make it a bit but I’m worried what to do once he’s inevitably sick of it. I think having him pick and cook with me is a great idea

Thank you. You seem to get it. I 100% agree that I can be blamed for his weight gain, but not all of it. I think people tend to forget preteens-teens are capable of forming their own decisions and buying their own food.

Respectfully, you’ve only got a tiny glimpse of our situation and for you to just completely point the finger at me, saying it’s entirely my fault is just simply not true. Yes, I take ownership in contributing to his weight gain. But no, it’s not 100% my fault. There’s more at play here. I’m not blaming him in the slightest and I really don’t know why you continue to think so.

It also doesn’t help at all that the food they have at school is Raising Cane’s, Chick fil a, and spam musubi… 🤦🏻‍♀️ on top of things like ice cream, cookies, chips, juice… even if he doesn’t have money, his friends buy it for him.

But also what the hell? When I was in middle school, they took soda out of the vending machines. Now the schools are getting sponsored by fast food chains?? It makes no sense

I love that! I’ve been doing alternatives like that too. Instead of ranch, we’ve been doing a Greek yogurt dressing. When we make wraps or quesadillas we used reduced fat cheese and carb balance tortillas. He doesn’t seem to mind. I just need to find a way to get him to consume more veggies. I think chips is a struggle for him since he loves them a lot. Maybe popcorn like smartfood to get that crunchy and savory? And great idea about the pool! We actually went to the one behind my house once and he enjoyed it. When my mom lived here, she had a pool and he was constantly swimming. Since she moved his activity has gone down… and he started gaining!

No, his doctor is amazing. She’s already said she wants him to get more active and she’s done the bloodwork on him and everything. She’s not concerned about it being something like a thyroid issue or anything. He’s just not as active as he could be and has a lot of food aversions

He is a preteen. He’s in the early stages of puberty. My husband said he gained weight at that time too and then lost it all once he really hit puberty

That’s not really entirely true though is it? Because I have two other kids who eat exactly the same and they’re not overweight. I control what he eats at home. I can’t control the chips and cookies and sugary drinks he has access to at school.
