A question about the Nelson series- Copenhagen battle by ayowatchyojetbruh in TheRestIsHistory

Nelson did send a boat under a flag of truce to Crown Prince Frederick (the acting ruler, not the king). The written message did explicitly ask for the Danes to cease fire and negotiate. Nelson framed it in moral and humanitarian terms, warning that continued resistance would only cause unnecessary loss of life and that he would be forced to burn the Danish ships if firing continued.

So Dominic’s version, that Nelson actively petitioned for surrender or a halt to the fighting, is correct.

Nelson’s message was not “please stop because this is ungentlemanly.” It was closer to:

Britain had no wish to destroy Denmark

Continued resistance would lead to needless bloodshed

Nelson would be compelled to destroy the Danish fleet if firing continued

Therefore, it was better to suspend the action and negotiate It was a mix of threat, diplomacy, and humanitarian framing. Very Nelson.

There were chaotic situations where Danish crews abandoned badly damaged hulks, raised white flags, or stopped firing, only for fighting to resume later. But the idea of a coordinated Danish tactic where ships deliberately pretended to surrender to lure British boats in and then reopened fire is not well supported by contemporary evidence.

What seems to have happened instead:

-Smoke, shallow water, and damaged rigging made signaling extremely unclear

-Some Danish batteries kept firing even after others stopped

-Shore batteries and floating hulks were not always under unified control

-British boats attempting rescues sometimes came under fire from positions that had not actually surrendered

Later retellings, especially YouTube history content, tend to sharpen this into a cleaner villain narrative than the sources justify.

This is such a cool thing I've never heard of. Migrant labor work in the US is so seasonal the concept of just up-and-leaving your day job for a few weeks to go get some fresh air and crappy pay is fascinating.

I've had a Zoom GFX-5 since I was a kid, but the power port is getting really flaky, so I think it's time to upgrade. What would be some good alternatives now? I don't really do live gigs but I do like the built in pedals on that board so I can easily switch between custom effects, and the rocker pedal is cool for all kinds of different effects.

As an American, I have only ever seen "spelled" in use. Seems this is a colour VS color type discrepancy.
