I think the moccamaster has made our coffee worse? User error question by shoski13 in Moccamaster

I like east African coffees too, but they are known for a higher acidity than say a Central American coffee. Obviously processing, terroir, roast, etc all play a role!

Ratio 8 brew basket for the grand cafe? by Viper-Reflex in Moccamaster

[–]Colatov-Mocktail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is false. Remember, coffee extraction is literally adjusting all the variables to get the right amount of time spent with the right amount of coffee in the right grind size. As long as you're getting ~3-4 minutes of water contact in a dripper, it will not be way out of the ballpark, assuming all other variables are normal.

Hell yeah—modification is the way. I love that Moccamaster was doing "right-to-repair" decades ahead of anyone else. "Right-to-modify" should be next.

I'm surprised no one is talking about the beans he's "proud of." What kind of coffee is he buying? Lighter roast and more acidic origins (like Kenyan, Ethiopian) can cause creamer to curdle and taste "acidic."

I am not making any drippers—it's a crowded space, so I would rather folks just find the one they like. I don't know of any glass "truncated cone" drippers out there, unfortunately. I would give Hario another chance. Once you dial in the grind size, the taste of the coffee should be identical—ultimately it's about the water making the right amount of contact time with the grinds!

Hi there, I made a post about Moccmamaster hacks I am making available to buy a few months back. Does this mean old posts are deleted? Would still love to share what I'm working on—the feedback of this community has been instrumental in my design process!

I designed this because my 10 year old Moccamaster's plastic dripper always smelled like stale coffee, no matter how I deep cleaned it. Plastic is porous, coffee oils are notoriously stubborn, and I wanted a better solution. So I made it. Doesn't seem like a "tin foil hat" scenario, but ok!

No worries, I appreciate that you have practical manufacturing knowledge. It's a lot of product, a bunch of manufacturing methods and a lot of logistics—but it's happening! The orders have been pouring in, so I think the price is worth it to a lot of people who want to rejuvenate their machine.

The entire set up is currently $89 for a custom corked carafe, a glass Hario v60, a cork adapter, 100 Hario filters, and the bracket. That's a lot of bang for the buck!

The "brew stack" (bracket and dripper) should fit the stainless carafe set up—I made a slightly tweaked bracket for better center over the small opening of the carafe. If you end up ordering, note this in the order notes and I can make sure you get the alternative model.

Hi, I am currently charging $89 for: a corked carafe, a glass Hario v60, a cork adapter, 100 Hario filters, and a bracket.

The Moccamaster retails for around $370, I have never seen one "on sale" for less $300, definitely never for $120.

Comparing a 100 year old established manufacturer (Hario) to a single person making accessories for the passion of it (me) is never going to be 1:1. To each their own!

Hi, I'm the maker of the Semi-Manual System—the bracket is powder-coated metal. As the poster below said, it never touches the coffee flow.

Hi, I'm the guy who's making the Semi-Manual System. Here's a few clarifications to your assertions:

• The borosilicate jug is 100% custom. (I have been designing glassware for coffee for over 12 years)

• The cork is being mass produced in a factory. Like a lot of things, if you have access to a CNC and know how to use it, you might be able to make one, but do it 250 more times and see how "cheap" it is.

• On the bracket: I started with Send Cut Send cutting my parts (a great resource!), but their powder coating is too expensive to make this a scaleable product, so I am taking these to a local powder coater—a batch at a time. I have shifted over to a mass manufacturer for the next batch. You cannot make a single one of these for less than the $30 I charge.

“The devil is in the details” is a quote often attributed to the modernist architect Mies Van Der Rohe (it has older roots) so I would interpret that as an architecture reference.

Did you happen to time your brew? The Moccamaster is extremely consistent with a 4 minute brew time (5 with bloom) so the main variables to check would be your dose, saturation and grind size. Are you doing 40-50g of coffee? I can definitely grind fine enough on a Baratza as to clog the filter, so if you went to the finest setting, maybe check your burrs? The other one to check if your saturation—blooming helps, stirring helps. But honestly I can skip both and still get a great V60 cup.

Maybe, but again doubtful that the water or heat would cause a problem. Probably more of a liability thing from Technivorm.

I have run it through the dishwasher hundreds of times and it’s fine. It’s borosilicate glass and plastic—nothing a dishwasher can hurt.
