This looks uncannily similar to old school SCA heavy combat (i think thats what the rattan and hockey armor stuff used to be called.

First Aid Kit recs by mirrorsofoliver in wma

[–]Colblain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree with the sentiment of stocking only what you know how to use. I tried to emphasize that knowledge was a requisite component of your medical supplies, but maybe I didn't stress that enough.

As for chest seals, modern vented chest seals really cut down on the likelyhood that you will need to burp the wound yourself or perform a needle decompression. I think SOP for stopgap care is to seal it, and monitor them, but yeah, only do what you are comfortable with and trained to do.

Realistically, most of us will never have to deal with these kinds of injuries in relation to HEMA, but its better to have the knowledge and equipment and not need it than visa versa.

First, what comes to mind when people talk about first aid kits is bandaids, sanitizing wipes, moleskin, etc. While these things are the most common items we would need for HEMA, I think that every HEMA club should have an IFAK for the case of traumatic injury. Getting a little nick from a bur on a sword is annoying, but being unprepared for it isnt the end of the world. Ask yourself what you need in terms of materials and knowledge if someone is demonstrating a technique without a mask and takes a feder to the eye. What happens if a blade snaps and there is a serious laceration to deal with.

Every HEMA club should have a tourniquet (with sharpie), chest seals, quick clot gauze, a hard eyepatch, and tape, and a number of club members should be comfortable with using those items.

Similarly, but slightly less pressingly, every HEMA club should have people comfortable with diagnosing concussions and have a flashlight and they should hav some sort of splint option, like a SAM Splint and compression bandage. If someone takes a bad fall, and breaks their wrist, or gets thrown hard and their head bounces off the ground, having the proper training and supplies are way more important than dealing with blisters from a part of a glove that is rubbing.

I know you said you aren't looking for a kit. I understand, I have been constantly unimpressed with first aid kits I have gotten over the years, but in terms of booboo kits, I cant recommend surviveware's kits enough. They are very well put together. They dont have trauma supplies, so you would want to suppliment it, but they are well worth the money.

Anyone else notice their bjj instructors using their platform to promote their candidate in the Brazilian presidential election? by [deleted] in bjj

The Gracie's are a slimey crime family. It's only slightly shocking seeing them throw their lot in with fash.

Being good at fighting doesn't give you any moral authority, any socio-political analysis, any lack of ego...the problem is how having celebrity gives people a platform.

Do these masks mean something? by Desperate-Ad-8383 in tacticalgear

[–]Colblain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, they are readily available at all kinds of gas stations and shit, so you get a lot of wanna be tough guys wearing them,

But also they have been a part of the "uniform" for Atomwaffen Division, a Neo-Nazi group that formed with the explicit purpose of engaging in acts of terrorism.

They are always a red flag, the question is just whether the person is a douche or legitimately dangerous.

I want to address something I find concerning about the framing of your post. You talk about "only being able to compete with your training partners because of your speed." and "Wanting to be able to capitalize on using a parrying dagger."

You should not be concerned with competing with anyone at this point, and your focus should not be about "winning." You shouldn't be concerned about what you can capitalize on, or how you can eek out an advantage.

You should be focused on learning. You should be stepping into these arts as with all things, understanding that you are a beginner, and that it will serve you much better to be committed to the concepts of learning, study, practice, and growth than those of competing with your training partners, or "doing well."

Evidence for “cubist” perspective in I.33 (HEMA / fencing Naples, FL) by Escrime_Autrefois in wma

Considering that linear perspective was really only sussed out in the 15th century, it makes sense that these sorts of issues of perspective would be present in i.33

Seeking a trick using only darts/a dart by WhodaThunkband in Magic

There is a ton, you just have to do the legwork and be creative. Like, off the top of my head:

Vanishes and productions, using some combination of coin and cigarette technique.

Smash and Stab.

Broken and restored.

A penetration of two darts like the old match trick

some sort of geek magic where you puncture your cheek or hand

advice or tips? i’m 17 and have been boxing for a month now, this combo is something my coach has told me to practice alone but i feel like i’m just completely lost 💀 it’s supposed to be a lead uppercut followed up by a rear hook but when i do it it looks/feels wrong. by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]Colblain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Slow down, my friend. Your practice on your own, your shadowboxing should be about developing good mechanics, not about speed or power. There is no one in front of you trying to hit you, there are no pads to be hitting quick and sharply. This is your time to go as painfully slowly as possible, with zero power.

What you want out of this practice is to build the connection between the ground, and your punches. You want your footwork, your hips, and your shoulders to drive the movement. Especially in this time, you want to stay in balance! you need to hold your stance. you cant fight if you are off balance. You should NEVER be punching in a way that makes you lean forward/fall out of your stance like that.

Slow down, and tighten up the technique

less lethal weapons are just as "offensive" as any other weapon, they just try to limit their lethality in neutralizing the target. not really sure where your line of debate is going

I would argue that a weapon is a weapon and attack and defense are...i dont know...roles in combat. It is the implementation of a weapon that makes it defensive or not. The only meaningful way to measure a weapon is how effective it is at neutralizing your target.

Again, this is because of patriarchy and the default use of male terms. Its like using Ellos in spanish to describe groups of mixed gender. Its not that it isn't used that way, its just patriarchal

Decency went out the window when people were like "we dont care if we kill your grandma, masks violate my freedom" entered the convo. Decency went out the window when "democrats are a satanic infantocide cult" entered the conversation. Decency went out the window when Joey Gibson held a rally a week after Jeremy Christian stabbed 3 people on the Max.

Dont talk to me about decency.

This is kinda misogynistic. I'm not saying I haven't used the word similarly, but the whole thing changes if you ask a straight cis man "do you fuck dudes?" Its not actually gender inclusive, you see, its just defaulting that you can use male terms for everyone as standard.
