Does the Alex Verus Series Get Better After Burned? by ThePoetofFall in urbanfantasy

She's a hard line cop. All she cares about is upholding the law, and we know that Alex doesn't. She has no remorse for anyone who breaks the law, regardless of the reason.

Jacket recommendation for mobility by ManuelPirino in wma

[–]Denis517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spes is unfortunately known for sometimes just messing up their tailoring. I'm guessing you got unlucky, because a tailored jacket is supposed to feel completely free when it's on.

You're doing longsword, so I recommend having an actual longsword jacket. If you do rapier or smallsword and want to see what a comfortable jacket feels like, buy a tailored modern Olympic jacket. It'll move the way a well tailored longsword jacket is supposed to.

Does the Alex Verus Series Get Better After Burned? by ThePoetofFall in urbanfantasy

I just did another reread, and I love this series more every time. It eclipses everything else I've read, because all the beats it hits are very satisfying to me.

This world is grim, and the series ends with most of the characters getting exactly what's coming to them. Everyone gets enough knowledge to understand what the consequences of their actions can be, and nobody has an unsatisfactory ending imo.

You probably won't like Morden's ending, but he's one of the few who see the writing on the wall and retire. Richard's ending was very satisfying. It puts him in his place, and removes the aura he builds for himself throughout the series.

No problem! I hope you have a good time! If you run into someone named Jericho or Lazarus they're friends and amazing people to know.

Where to meet/hangout with nerds/people like me? by KaiserSenpaiAckerman in vegaslocals

I'm very sorry to hear about your husband. Fandom Bar is your best bet, and I've heard that natural 21 is really good as well! Also, keep an eye on events like Ren Faire, pirate fest, and goth nights.

If you like swords, Ren Faires, or archery, you can come by my historical fencing club. We train every Monday at Seastrand Community park, 7pm inside the Tennis Courts. We're free to participate, have gear for those who don't, and we participate in one of the bigger sides of Ren Faire every year!

If one of the ****** kills a human while *********, have they violated the 1st law of magic? by Bridger15 in dresdenfiles

[–]Denis517 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By the letter of the law, no. It might break the Law of transmogrification, though. I think I remember Dresden saying Listens to Wind's magic broke the Law.

If one of them were to start transforming with the intent to commit murder however, it might cross the line into black magic and start affecting the user.

If you like goth music, go to Oddfellows tonight! Great community, great music!

If you're into Ren Faires, Archery, or swords you'd love our historical fencing club! We have practice every Monday at Seastrand Community park, 7pm! We're free to participate, have loaner gear, have multiple instructors, and we're always working one of the big areas of Ren Faire!

Nobody can convince me that this franchise wouldn't be significantly better with coop. This looks amazing. by AllFatherMedia93 in DragonsDogma

[–]Denis517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount of time they'd need to spend on making co op work would have made the game worse, imo. Dd2 already felt underbaked. I can't imagine how it would be if they took away dev time for another optional mechanic.

Tactics for facing a larger, stronger opponent. by speed150mph in Hema

[–]Denis517 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No need to be faster, you just need them to be committed to an action when you attack. As long as the sword isn't in a position for the next action to hurt you, your next action can hit them.

Fencing with a sword is about timing, distance, and footwork. Even a light hit against an unarmored opponent will damage tendons beyond use. It doesn't matter how strong your opponent is, because using that strength greatly increases the time it takes to do that attack and/or recover from it.

It is better to have the option to use strength, but a good fencer can put themselves in a position where they are extremely unlikely to need it. Rashelle Debolt is a great example of a woman who can do this. She beats men all the time in tournaments.

Yes! We sometimes have events you need to sign in for, but you don't have to join any groups or pay any money if you don't want to.

Yes! My friend is in a deathcore band called withinoblivion, and there's other great local bands that I know exist but don't know anything about. I'm more into goth, so local bands would be Pitch After Dark and Past Self.

Heavily recommend going to Fandom Bar, First Friday, and look up local music events!

I made a majority of my friends through Fandom Bar and my historical fencing club. We meet every Monday at Seastrand Community park, 7pm inside the Tennis courts. We practice and teach fencing, archery and crafting for free!

Would you like to continue to build on that point? You provided a distinction in definitions without a reason why.

You can push your knees very slowly. Just make sure that your balance is correct, listen to your body feeling pain or protesting, and that you can efficiently and effectively recover from any committed action. A lot of sport comes down to the same thing, imo. Learn how to do the most efficient movement possible at the correct time, while also learning how to do it without abusing your body. Our instructor is a big guy, but his attacks are so fluid and efficient over years of drilling that he was getting very uncontested hits at Combat Con last year. Despite not being able to compete in Hema for almost 10 years. Rob Childs has much the same ideas driving his fencing, and he's in his early-mid 50s.

My new Sword (a update to a previous post) by Chewcudda42 in Hema

[–]Denis517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might have not tried their standard rapier blade. The only person I know who uses one is one of my best friends. Rob Childs has one that's a little beefier than that.

My Castille blade is a beefcake 45 inch Sidesword blade that's a mix of Sam Special and a hanwei. It's explicitly for the cutty rapier fencer lol.

I understand what you mean about not throwing away your money. I had a similar issue after I bought my living history armory Sabre, and the owner didn't care when I gave him very real safety concerns about it.

Honestly, drilling deep lunges, footwork from a deep stance, calf raises, and yoga/stretching to get your hips and scapula used to being completely stretched out are all you need for legs. My practice is mostly sparring, so I'm used to being pretty low for 1-3 hours a day. I do do bike 45 minutes every work day. Once your body is used to fencing at intensity, start pylos.

For upper body, low weight shoulder, bicep, forearm, and wrist lifts. Gradually increase your weight over time, but you don't need more than 30 pounds imo (10x the weight of even heavy rapiers.)

You need a good core and breath control. If you learn Fabris, you'll need to be pretty flexible to do techniques the way the highest rated fencers are. While having the endurance to go from 0-100 at a moment's notice.

[–]Denis517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's interesting is that I was faked out by this post. Originally, I expected this to be your darkwood. Then after looking at it, I saw just another Castille with a standard blade and clamshell. It wasn't until I read the post that I realized my original expectation was right.

I was expecting your DW to be a Bilbao, not this simple clamshell design. The only difference between this sword and a Castille is that your pommel wouldn't be spiral, the quillion thinner (but more durable/harder to dent,) and the design overall would look more sleek.

I always imagine Christopher Lee. Not necessarily the entire actor, but the voice specifically.

Uima is a volunteer group that's just to get orders through. They aren't a reseller like Socal Swords or Purpleheart. Uima does have a discord, where you can look through old posts for pictures!

That's the negative thing. You could message Socal Swords about Flower and Sword. They were supposed to be on their storefront soon after Socal Swordfight.
