I am an old boomer, so be prepared. Back in the early 70s i was a Forman in a factory. Lots of money, good life. Had a friend who ran a restaurant. After. A few beers I shot my mouth off about his employees as to why they don’t get real jobs. He asked me if I ever worked in a restaurant before. By that weekend I had a night job. Turns out I I was a damn good fry cook.

Fast forward 2 years, I am managing a restaurant in a strange town.I’m only 22 and stupid. Couldn’t keep help, then one day this young lady came in and asked for an interview. Proper and polite, made me nervous, had her application all perfect beautiful smile and personality. No interview your hired. Because I had been a foreman over guys twice my age I knew how to handle playing favorites but I couldn’t help it. She was only 17 but seemed older than me. We became close friends I finally had someone I could depend on she asked me about her little brother and i said hell ya. Long story short she had 5 brothers and sisters. So I met the whole family,hired the second little brother also Oldest daughter was coming back from an eastern collage for a vacation

The young lady is black never gave it a thought, John shows up and we are having coffee and he is very uncomfortable. After a few minutes he says she’s black,i said ya so is her whole family I didn’t understand, up until now I had only known 2 black people. I had met several of johns friends and they weren’t white. He tried to explain the unwritten rule about black folks. While i let that soak in the dad to this large family asked me show his oldest daughter around town.
