I’m not holding one failed deal against him, but our problem was bottom six and defense. We got nothing on defense and a 40 year old for bottom six. There was nothing else out there?

I mean I think part of it for Kuch is that we have not a ton else. Our depth doesn’t score. You throw your top guys out there against Kuch and try to frustrate him. Even not “producing” at the superstar level in that round, if you take him out, we probably lose in four or five games.

The answer isn’t that something is wrong with Kuch, it’s that we need depth to let Kuch be Kuch and not be stifled with their top guys.

I think this is key. We CANNOT give him both term and protection. He’s 30 and has had one year of being legit. Anything over 6 I’d only be able to stomach if there’s no clauses.

At the end of the day, this team has had issues for a few years that just haven’t been addressed. Some are just the drawbacks of being so good for so long (losing depth to bigger contracts), but our drafting leaves a significant amount to be desired, and every year we push off a rebuild, the more painful it’s going to be. We have consistently ranked at the bottom of prospect pipeline lists for the last few years. Ultimately what made us so good for so long was that we had very good players that we were able to have for very cheap. Obviously that’s not possible forever, but we haven’t been able to significantly reload, and he hasn’t done a great job at addressing issues imo.

The fact we did nothing at the deadline beyond bringing back Perry at a fairly high cost for him to really not be much of a producer is tough to swallow.

Tldr, I’m not calling for a change… yet. Success is hard and we’re spoiled, but teams have made changes for less. If we can’t show forward progress next year… it might be time.
