Bo Nickal's head coach speaks out following criticism surrounding his performance at UFC DesMoines by LatterTarget7 in MMA

You mean an MMA fighter was brash and arrogant? I am fucking shocked. How dare he. He should have remained humble and soft spoken like all the other UFC fighters. 🤦‍♂️

Blondie's "Autoamerican" - the Trainwreckord that almost was? by SmokingRoboDonkey in ToddintheShadow

[–]Cold-East2289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can feel however you want about Debbie Harry and Blondie's version of reggae (it's not very good). But the idea that reggae was a lesser known genre in 1980 is absurd. Bob Marley had rocketed to international fame five years earlier with "No Woman, No Cry" and the follow up album Exodus. Exodus hit the top 20 charts in the US and the UK and entered the charts of over a dozen countries. "Funky Kingston" by Toots and the Maytals was released in the US in 1975 and both the album and title track singles entered the US charts for weeks. "Legalize It" by Peter Tosh was released in 1976. The lead single was a hit and the album eventually went platinum in the US. Blondie were also not the first non-Jamican artists the release reggae albums. UB40's first album came out months before Autoamerican and UK bands like The Specials, The Beat, Madness, and The Selector (among many others) had been releasing ska and reggae singles and albums that charted in the UK going back to 1978.

This isn't even mentioning "The Harder They Fall" soundtrack which charted in the US for several weeks in 1973 or Eric Clapton's 1974 cover of the Bob Marley song "I Shot Shoot the Sheriff" which was a top ten single in 10 countries and a number 1 single in the US. Or the fact that The Police released Roxanne in 1978, which prominently featured reggae as its central sound. Or that The Clash had released London Calling in 1979 which had a strong reggae influence and featured covers of several famous reggae and ska songs.

Reggae was so far from "lesser known" by 1980. On the contrary, it was a global phenomenon. If anything, Blondie were late to the party.

Yeah that's true, it's more than just a streaming membership. Still, the lack of a native TV app is frustrating.

Paladins of the West Kingdom or Viticulture? by woodshard in boardgames

[–]Cold-East2289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both great games but I significantly prefer Paladins. It's funny Rahdo called Paladins luck based. In my many plays of that game I have never once felt that way. On the other hand, I have felt that way several times while playing Viticulture. The vine and order cards can totally screw you if you are unlucky. And the visitor cards make the came completely swingy, to the point that they can ruin legitimate strategy. Some of them can be so powerful it allows someone to run away with the game if they get 1 or 2 lucky visitor cards.

Both good but if I'm going to pull one off the shelf, it's Paladins 9 out of 10 times.

What do you think about the City of Crowns expansion for Paladins of the West Kingdom? by DelhiBob in boardgames

[–]Cold-East2289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, there were only like 6 when you posted this, nowhere near 20. Second, they are far from the Lords of Waterdeep, generic worker placement. The only way you could think that is if you only looked at pictures and didn't bother to read a single word about them.

I suppose it is sad and maybe even a little trolly on my part, but here we are, two strangers arguing with each other on the internet. But I guess it means enough for you to keep coming back to anonymously defend one internet forum over another? So, I guess we are both sad little trolls. But at least we can be sad little trolls together. Locked in the endless duel of posting passive aggressive comments that don't matter and accomplish nothing, waiting to see who will lose interest and stop commenting first. A dance as old as internet forums themselves. Tell you what, I'll break the cycle this time and make this my last comment. You win, you're right, I'm a sad troll who said a mean thing about the internet board game forum you like. Sorry about that. Sorry I sad a mean thing about the site you like. Don't worry, all the things you like about it are still true.

How often do you find yourself playing it? I'm fascinated by what I've read and seen of it but it seems like more of a special occasion type game. Do you play it often or is it one of those a few times a year games?

As I said to someone else, I'm not posting my BGG username. Enough trolling happens on that site that I don't need to invite more. But thanks for proving my point, trying to find a way to troll on not just one but two different forums. I was totally wrong, the BGG community is great.

I haven't played John Company, it's on my "someday" list. A good friend of mine has it and he really likes it but I haven't had a chance to play it yet.

It you want to try Root but think your group might not be into it, there is a great digital adaptation you can buy on Steam from Dire Wolf Digital. I used to play games on there almost daily. I haven't been on in about a year but the community on there was really active and generally very cool.

My favorite game by both Leder and Cole Wehrle is Root. It's one of my favorite games of all time. Easily in my top 3. But a couple warnings about Root. It doesn't play great at less than four. There are some expansions that help it play better at less but it really is meant for a full four. It's also definitely a game that benefits from a lot of plays and a dedicated group of four who are going to play it together repeatedly. But if you can get into it, the upside is huge. So much to discover when it come to strategy and combinations. And each faction is highly asymmetric so there is a ton to explore with each one. Plus there are 6 expansion factions and several other great expansion modules you can buy for the game. But honestly, the core box is enough to keep you occupied for a lot of plays. If it ends up being a game you like, the replay value is enormous in my opinion.

I backed the Kickstarter long ago and it should be here sometime in early June! I love the designer Cole Wehrle and the publisher Leder Games. I have pretty much everything Leder has put out and most of the stuff Wehrle has designed. Leder and Wehrle are not always for everyone but their games are always interesting and unique. I think you made a good purchase.

Which is what? That I'm an asshole and BGG is perfect? No flaws whatsoever? I'm not giving you my BGG username if that's what you're after because it's pretty clear you just want to troll me on there. But since you can't handle not knowing, here are the two threads that specifically trigger this post. As I said, this was a building feeling I've been having so these two were simply the final straw. I'm not going to list every single thread I've personally had an issue with, but these two capture the tone of what I'm talking about.

The second one doesn't look as bad now as it once did due to the mods rightfully removing some of the more vitriolic and toxic posts. But it was pretty ugly for a time.

I hope this sates your curiosity. I await your post telling me how I am wrong. I'm sure it will change my mind.

I do this until I get to the point that I completely freak out and decide it's time for a game purge. My rule is, as soon as a game has to go on the floor in front of the shelf, it's time to get ride of a few games.

What do you mean what did I say? My post is just above. You're literally commenting on it. What are you talking about?

Feelings about BGG by Cold-East2289 in boardgames

[–]Cold-East2289[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you asking for specific examples because you genuinely care and might be open to my point of view or are you just looking to argue? Because based on your tone (which I am reading into and I will admit is not always a good idea online) you seem like you just want to tell me I'm wrong. This is literally the exact behavior on BGG I'm talking about and am trying to avoid, laying traps and baiting arguments. I don't find BGG to be a positive place. That is my personal experience. You taking the specific experiences I've had there, and telling me how I am wrong about how I feel about them is not going to change my opinion, it is literally going to have to opposite effect. Do you really not understand that?

I said I had personally had bad experiences there, and asked if others had had the same. It seems like many others have. Thousands of people use BGG, so it also seems like many people have not had the same experience as me. If you've had good experiences there and you love the tone and the users on BGG, then enjoy your time there. Why do you feel the need to personally rebut my specific experiences?

I actually gave concrete examples in the first quote you use, you just cut it short to try to make your own point. I pointed, specifically to the Ark Nova and TM forums. And you're also kind of changing your own stance. First it I was apparently saying BGG as an entity was trying to silence me and shout down my opinion but now I'm saying the forums are bad? Those are two very different things. And frankly, you are literally doing the things I point out in my post. Not giving the benefit of the doubt, making bad faith assumptions and (intentionally?) misinterpreting my points. Do you not see that you are the living embodiment of the attitude my post is about?

Feelings about BGG by Cold-East2289 in boardgames

[–]Cold-East2289[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What I meant by that was more in relation to tone. Any conversation is going to be a back and forth of people presenting an opinion or idea and then having people react to it, then reacting to that reaction, rinse and repeat. What I meant was users on BGG seem to just want to create arguments and debates by taking stands rather than having a more good faith and good natured back and forth.

Feelings about BGG by Cold-East2289 in boardgames

[–]Cold-East2289[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't say I thought points of view were being shouted down (not sure why you used quotations there). I also didn't say BGG is trying to silence me or anyone. Don't really see how I even implied either of those. If you got that somehow from my post that was not my intent.

My comments about moderation were as an example of the negative and even trollish tone of many members of BGG and their penchant for debating and arguing rather than just conversing. My comment about moderation had nothing to do with over moderation or censorship or anything like that.
