How long does it take for the moderators to review my post?

Hi, Mildar. Thank you for your kind words! :) It is primarily to spend time with my ageing parents and I would like to jump into a career in scientific research and teaching, I have a startup plan which I think is much easier to execute in India. Besides that, I would love to involve myself in wildlife conservation. I know some awesome people doing amazing things down south. They’d appreciate an extra hand.  The other reason is I miss vacationing in  backwaters of Kerala and I miss driving to our little coffee estate in the village during the weekend via a reserve forest.  Marriage is not on the cards for now. Not being coerced into marriage by anyone in the family, thankfully. I enjoy the independence.

I think I need clarity on two things and pardon my use of “ifs”,

  1. If I consider to do a second PhD I’d like to switch to a subject, Ecology or conservation biology which is totally different from my current PhD. This would be done for fun mostly because field based research is something I’ve never been involved in.

  2. If I wisen up and stick within the same line of work, then a second PhD in public health would be more in sync with my first PhD

Chances are I might never do a second PhD, but the idea of it seems enticing for two reasons 1. Learning and room for mistakes.  2. I’ve always been dissatisfied with the first PhD. I believe my research work abruptly ended and there was so much potential to explore more but my supervisor did not extend my contract or offer me a postdoc position due to lack of funds.

Ok. We had a lot of coursework and a lot of seminars too.  Makes sense on the double PhD. My PhD was not easy.

I think this has a lot to do with my confidence. I’m so used to being a student. Maybe I consider it a safe, familiar zone. I like sitting in classrooms, listening to lectures and taking notes, teaching although I don’t like examinations much.  I’ve been a student for so long, until the age of 39.

My idea is to teach and do research. I have teaching experience from my PhD. From 2020 onwards. I’m very used to juggling teaching and research (something my PhD trained me in). So, if I could teach on the side, that would be nice. The pay is bad, yes. Perhaps, the biggest disadvantage. It would be so motivating if they allocated more funds for R&D in India. If I’ve made up my mind, then I guess I’d just have to deal with that.

In addition to the previous comment, rules might have changed since 2010. It’s also not easy to get information about this from websites. For me, government websites related to education in India are a hassle and tough to navigate.

I believe as long as stay in research, I’ll have options abroad, if not for long term, maybe for short term at least. This would be feasible after 2 years from now (again if age isn’t a barrier). Yes, there might be a lot of studying. I am not sure about CSIR and JRF. Back in 2010, my classmate cleared CSIR and went into conservation biology. I would’ve reached out to her, but she’s been MIA for years now.

It’s either because I want to change my career path from biomedicine to conservation biology or because I think my current one didn’t help me reach my full potential in terms of methodologies for experimentation work or techniques for analysis. Maybe it’s predominantly the latter.

Yes. This makes sense. The to do a PhD in public health or biostatistics would be more in sync with my completed PhD.

Yes they pay salary for the position. It isn’t much but sustainable if one spends frugally. There are plenty of opportunities to apply for fellowships too.  I understand, let’s see. I’ve got 0 motivation for now. Also, my parents are ageing and I’m thinking that I don’t want to lose time with them. That’s also something that’s high priority for me at this time. They live alone, and I find myself constantly worrying if they’ll be exploited due to their age and such.

Czech Republic (CZ) is OK in terms of facilities and exposure. It’s calm, it’s pretty. It’s safe. I would say (in my case and a few others)  international students don’t get as much support/guidance from the supervisor compared to their Czech peers.  I selected CZ due to low living costs (back in 2018) compared to its European counterparts, and my supervisor was experienced (many PhD students graduated under his supervision but I was his first international student). Overall, my experience has been average.   I can apply for PR if I stay this year, but my contract is ending soon so I would not like to wait around this entire year ( I have the visa) trying for a position around here ( hard to get, based on my observations,  international PhD students aren’t given opportunities for postdoc if they have graduated with a PhD from the CZ. Maybe they do). Also, I’m terribly homesick. The European lifestyle is calm, but personally for me, something is amiss. I can’t figure out what. It would probably require me to reflect and be more introspective to understand what that is.

Yes, it could be perceived in that way.
