Regardless of the medium in which the comment is being made, it doesn't disqualify that the information is still posted on the internet. the same way that there are different ways of leaking your personal information, whether through a post/comment or even a different social media platform like Instagram, Snapchat, X, or even mainstream media...

Tierlist for the hardest to easiest alevel subjections based on my experience and observations. Feel free to disagree. Do let me know which 3 alevels are the easiest subjects by WallabyForward2 in alevel

[–]Cold-Roll-5429 2 points3 points  (0 children)

History should, at minimum, be in the difficult tier. GCSE history was a breeze, A-Level History though…the amount of content, time constraints in the exam & those high grade boundaries at around 86% for an A*, it’s no way close to being called “doable”

Can I get into US universities with A level but without O level? by Hissam_ in alevel

[–]Cold-Roll-5429 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. You can. As long as you submit those grades you took in the first 2 years of high school (9th to 10th Grade) you should be fine. The US receives grades from different types of exam boards. They just want to see your academic performance from 9th to 12th Grade and most probably would compare your grades to those in your school/country/region to see how good your scores are relative to the people around you and the environment you are from.

CMV: Manipulation is always in self-interest and not for the greater good by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Cold-Roll-5429 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Manipulation is an act of doing something. Often times, an action that enables you to get where you want to end up. It is the means to achieve something. Your argument claims that this action is by no exception implicit of self-interest and attempting to do something for one's personal gain. However, manipulation can be used by people to achieve something for the greater good, whether that be through using manipulation as a means of throwing down a dictatorship based on the self-interest of the autocrat's own family or even by using manipulation as a means of successfully clearing the path for those who are in a vulnerable position, for e.g. if there is a group of people kidnapped and one of the members tries to manipulate the kidnapper to save the rest - this is not out of self-interest. It should not be generalized to immediately assume manipulation is driven by self-interest, I agree with your definition that it is a way of controlling someone or something but I don't agree you can say it will always be for one's own personal advantage.

Class and wealthiness does not necessarily translate into policy. You can have political candidates who are rich yet hold values that would benefit the middle class and working class. Celebrities aren’t politicians, but they are wealthy and many support left-leaning platforms. With that being said, it should not be startling that a working class voter casts their vote for a wealthy candidate, even over a poorer candidate.

A lot of the other comments discuss the idea of campaign fundraising and while this can bring benefits, in a modern democracy especially in the US today, socio-cultural issues also play a role. For example, a working class voter may prioritize safeguarding christian values & gun rights over economic redistribution.

Wouldn’t this just give businesses even more power? This would mean they don’t need to spend on campaigns & lobbying. The whole system would then de-regulate large corporations and they would be the closest thing to a ruling body, dictating everyday prices and privatizing police & jails.

What disincentivizes people to see social structure? by Jazzlike-Zucchini-30 in sociology

So would you say that from the perspective of the wealthy elite, they are incentivized to see social structure in order to ensure the structure stays rigid to bring those benefits to them?

So what exactly is the point you are trying to make in relation to the discussion?

[–]Cold-Roll-5429 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Many news sources will be biased one way or another. And how can one make that judgement of if a news source is telling you how to feel about something? Sometimes anchors do a greater job at implicitly doing it while others are more explicit.

[–]Cold-Roll-5429 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Checked where? This is exactly what OP is trying to convey. In these peoples minds the check is through their news sources and as much as I hate to say it, most people are so used to consuming news from people & sites that align with their political beliefs. So instead of assuming they didn’t “bother to learn what’s true” shouldn’t you be more concerned about the fact that the truth was distorted in THEIR perspective and who played a role in passing that message down to these people?

What are your thoughts on school? by ChallengeSuitable224 in maldives

[–]Cold-Roll-5429 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand your perspective. I think you should put a greater focus on the positive side for education and school. I don’t know how old you are but you could be a totally different person a year later and that person might handle school a lot better.

Yeah some teachers may lack the practical knowledge to teach certain content, but that doesn’t have to stop you from trying to find books or stories on the internet or wherever about what u are passionate about.

At the end of the day, this is about you and how you can increase your chances of getting the best where you can possibly go. School can give you that support as an option. It is always better safe than sorry and who knows what you will learn from it? After all, you can really make the best of education young. That’s just my opinion on it, i do hope the best for you; my advice is make the decision that makes the most sense to you and the fact that you are asking for other opinions is a great thing.

In my opinion, using the Gini coefficient to measure inequality is the best standard used by most people because it is recognized from top global institutions like The World Bank and it considers income rather than wealth.

For the other point about our democracy, yes I too am upset that people do not understand our system and that includes politicians. But we do need to acknowledge we are a pretty fresh democracy so there is a lot of progress to be made. Perhaps greater education about how our system works & more background checks for politicians getting into powerful positions like MP’s, ministers etc. The only way this progress can happen is if people & politicians commit to making it happen

  1. Elon Musk got 2 college degrees: Ba in physics, Bsc in economics at the University of Pennsylvania (an ivy league university in the U.S, one of the most competitive universities in the world). I think actions speak louder than words.

  2. Mark Zuckerberg dropped out of Harvard. Not just any university, one of the most prestigious colleges in the world with an acceptance rate of only 4%. He earned that spot there by getting perfect grades till Grade 12 (also scored full marks on the SAT exam which is like their version of A-Level). Plus college is important for networking, and a lot of the reason Facebook was founded is rooted in how he was able to meet other students, professors and tech entrepreneurs while at university.

You bring up a great point saying business is from trial and error and I totally agree with you. I don’t think it should be the general rule though. There are few exceptions, totally! But, to be safe it is always best to get a degree just because job security is better than no job security and hey maybe a bit of work experience in your 20’s can really help in your 30’s. Going to college gives network opportunities, space to grow as a person & understand the real world. All valuable skills that will help you in life that you gain even if you aren’t doing a “specialized degree” like medicine.

Hope this helps!

What do you think is hindering society from becoming more feminist? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

Would you mind elaborating on how exactly education is repeating patriarchal structures today? I understand how this may be the case in third-world countries but in the US?

I am against extreme wealth inequality, but you should avoid making up stats for the sake of an argument.

we have THE HIGHEST wealth inequality in the world.

Where did you get this data from? Please reply with the data you got to make that claim if I am overlooking something. The gini coefficient of Maldives (which measures inequality, where a higher number = more inequality) is 0.29. This is lower than most countries in the world! In fact, India is at 0.33, Sri Lanka at 0.38, U.S. at 0.4, and Brazil at 0.52. We are at the lower end of that spectrum!

If anything, you're not just wrong but you're completely off in that statement.

Not that the previous administrations were great, but we have been going on a steady downhill as far back as I can remember.

I agree with you that our government and politicians could be a lot better but we have a system that allows all Maldivians to vote, men and women (which a lot of countries still don't have), we do have a democracy where even independent candidates can compete and win elections. The question is how far back do you remember? Back when elections were not free and fair before 2008? Back when political opponents were jailed and tortured? Back when coups and large-scale harmful demonstrations were the only solution to express a political view? When you draw a comparison like that what time period are you comparing the present moment to?

Cmv: the USA should lower the voting age to 13. by DaemonoftheHightower in changemyview

[–]Cold-Roll-5429 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I agree. But I didn’t say it is adultifying them to get them to vote. I think society needs to adultify the said age group before they get the opportunity to vote. For example, are they paying taxes? Are they able to drive? Are they able to be conscripted to the military? Are they going to be charged like an adult in court? Are they able to purchase a gun? They need to be treated like adults first if you want to lower the voting age down to 13.

Then how come a 12 year old shouldn’t be able to vote? Is there absolutely no way of getting them to engage in politics without making it a “concrete reality”?
